HSBC
"Date"
72s
16 February 2017
UK Banks

This ad for HSBC's Fast Balance service is sweet without being too sugary as we watch an elderly gent prove you're never too old for first date jitters. While the big band soundtrack and the sepia-tinged palette underline his age he's evidently not stuck in the past; at ease with texting and using HSBC's mobile banking app. Classy stuff.

Knorr
"Help the Homeless"
60s
27 Mar 2017
There must have been a certain nervousness at MullenLowe when they were charged with spreading the word about an initiative that has Knorr supporting homeless shelters. Worthy as it is, there must have been a concern that it would look exploitative and maybe even a little crass. Against that background, Rupert Murray's film is pretty marvellous.

Britain's Got Talent
"Backstage"
60s
28 Mar 2017
Slapstick is neatly used to draw attention to the wide range of acts likely to take part in this year's series of 'Britain's Got Talent' - an annual pop-pourri of eccentricity which sees performing dogs jostling for position with singers, dancers and acrobats. And and Dec start the mayhem before being untrousered by a vengeful sorcerer.

Lidl
"Kaiho"
60s
27 Mar 2017
It;s hard to imagine Lidl being advertised in this fashion in the UK and it just goes to show how differently a brand can be perceived in one country as against another. It's a beguiling depiction of a relationship that looks too passionate for its own good... and the impact it has on a woman reflecting on it while picnicking on a high rise roof.

Sixt
"The Affair"
30s
27 Mar 2017
Another twisted piece of communication for the car rental company has a woman letting her married lover know that she's pregnant... while he's with his wife and children. He's unfazed though because he's able to trump her surprising news with his own revelation about the inexpensiveness of renting a BMW through Sixt.

Short Films
"Visualise This"
2 mins 25s
27 Mar 2017
Danny Capozzi's satire on client fickleness prompted a lot of laughter when we screened it at our March 2017 CraftWorks event and the director proved as engaging as his film in the Q&A which followed. While you wouldn't guess it from his understated demeanour, Capozzi is clearly something of a show-off as he uses this film to demonstrate his versatility by executing a range of different animation techniques.

1881
"The Woman in My Life"
60s
27 Mar 2017
In this beautifully-shot ad from Norway, a middle-aged man enlists some help to track down a woman from whom he has long been estranged. His helpers are the country's directory enquiry services and they succeed. Poignant and heartfelt without ever overstepping the mark, it nonetheless makes us wonder about our own equivalent... try as we might, we can't imagine the 118 twins helping heal a family rift.

Renault
"Enter the Zone"
1 min 37s
28 Mar 2017
Park Village's Thibaut Grevet taps into the racing mindset with this arresting Renault film. We've rarely seen the marque's high-performance division advertised, but this brings us up to speed. While Renault's consumer-focused advertising is hit-or-miss, the brand's sporting wing comes across as a formidable proposition.

Jemena Gas
"Instantly Better"
30s
28 Mar 2017
It's been a good year for dragons in advertising so far. First Dorito's introduced us to their animatronic beast; now Australian energy firm Jemena present their own tame-ish firebreather. Alas, there's a reason why household dragons haven't caught on. This couple describes some of the fiery mishaps sparked by their scaly pet.

Macy Gray
"White Man"
3 mins 25s
27 Mar 2017
'White Man' is Macy Gray's comment on contemporary America, reminding us all that some people are still considered more equal than others. Fatima Andrade Koehler's accompanying clip features some terrific choreography as two women - one black, one white - confront each other while their hung-out laundry dries behind them (nice metaphor).

Legoland Discovery Centre
"Today"
30s
28 Mar 2017
This charming ad for Legoland Discovery Centre shows children doing what they do best - letting their imagination take charge. Whether they're building racing cars or towering over a city made of bricks, these young 'uns seem to be having constructive fun at the theme park's Manchester off-shoot. Well-timed for the Easter break.

Hellmann's Mayonnaise
"Sustainably Sourced Oils"
20s
28 Mar 2017
"Sourcing our oils sustainably" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, does it? Still, this latest Hellmann's ad does a lively job promoting the mayo's eco-friendly credentials without skimping on the food. Parent company Unilever have pledged to reduce the environmental impact from its brands, so it seems Hellmann's are bang on message.

Fairy Non-Bio
"Touching Moments"
30s
27 Mar 2017
This Fairy commercial reminds us their products aren't just suitable for babies - they can keep the whole family comfortable, as well. We see everyone from freshly bathed youngsters to sprightly granddads benefiting from Fairy's softly-softly formula. Gentle as can be, but it neatly posits the brand as a family staple.

Rag'n'Bone Man
"Skin"
4 mins 27s
27 Mar 2017
Rag'n'Bone Man delivers an a capella intro to 'Skin' against a wasteland backdrop that is as beautiful as it is austere. It sets the scene for what follows: a young boy picking his way through a post-apocalyptic small town searching for signs of any other human life. The landscape is the real star here - empty, sweeping vistas of Kazakhstan give Rag'n'Bone Man's plangent tones a different kind of depth.

Run The Jewels
"Legend Has It"
4 mins 03s
24 Mar 2017
Brian Beletic puts Run The Jewels duo Killer Mike and EL-P in a mind-melting police line-up for their latest release. The promo suggests the dice are loaded against them, especially when others in the line-up include a nun, a schoolgirl, and a guy in a full-body plaster cast. Or are we just assuming that's the case? Stick around for the ending to find out.

Dispatches
"Trump's Globe"
20s
28 Mar 2017
Donald Trump's presidency has so far felt like the world's most shambolic geography lesson. This wry Dispatches trail gathers just some of his inflammatory statements and slaps them on a globe. No sign of what exactly is happening in Sweden, mind. The programme asks how scared we should be of Trump's administration - should make for some relaxing evening viewing.

Sainsbury's
"Easter Hunt"
30s
27 Mar 2017
You're never too old for an Easter egg hunt, according to this energetic Sainsbury's ad. Sure enough, we see children and adult-sized bunnies exploring every nook and cranny in search of chocolate treats. Colourful product shots clash with the monochrome home footage, thus allowing the supermarket's Easter fare to stand out even more.

Audi
"Calling"
56s
24 Mar 2017
Drivers are encouraged to heed the call in this slick Audi Q5 commercial as a sharp-suited wanderer samples everything from dingy tattoo parlours to unspoiled countryside - with the advertised SUV proving the ideal vessel. A snippet from Cliff Martinez's 'The Neon Demon' score gives the ad a pulsing, urgent quality.

Hellmann's Mayonnaise
"Free Range Eggs"
20s
24 Mar 2017
This energetic Hellmann's commercial reveals that only bonafide free range eggs make it into their mayonnaise. Now these hungry sorts can tuck in knowing the brand are all about doing things in good taste. 2AM's resident foodie Jason Lowe ensures the brand's zest for good grub comes across loud and clear.

Combogesic
"Staycation"
30s
24 Mar 2017
A female VO channelling Tilly (Sally Phillips) from 'Miranda' spits out evey modern piece of vernacular known to copywriter as she describes the marvellous effect of a new medication combining paracetamol and ibuprofen. Of course, the same effect can be achieved for a fraction of the cost by taking one of each sourced from a supermarket own brand packet.

Nationwide
"Two Teas"
20s
26 Mar 2017
Another short burst of poetry on behalf of the Nationwide, this time from the aptly-named SugarJ Poet. It's an abbreviated version of a 90" we've previously featured on DAVID and acts more as an aide-memoire than as a piece in its own right. But it strengthens the aggregate of a campaign we're coming to like more and more.

Halifax
"Thunderbirds"
40s
26 Mar 2017
Parker from Thunderbirds wins 500,000 in Halifax's prize draw and knows exactly what to do with the money... head to a tropical island where he can get away from the orders being issued by Lady Penelope. Let's hope he hasn't ended up on Tracy Island as he may find he's leapt from the frying pan only to end up in the fire. Brimming with authenticity.

NHS Antibiotics
"Use Us Wisely"
30s
24 Mar 2017
We never thought we'd use 'antibiotics' and 'song and dance' in the same sentence, but there's a first time for everything. This NHS ad has a dark strain of humour running through it as we watch numerous antibiotic capsules snuff it. The meds encourage us to think twice about using them needlessly with a rather, erm, infectious ditty.

British Gas
"Flock"
30s
26 Mar 2017
A penguin at a railway station is handing out smart devices to his own kind in a bid to illustrate how millions of people have chosen British Gas's technology to help them take firm control of their central heating. These devices are pretty cool but you'll use them to adjust the temperature more often in the first week than you ever will again.

Deezer
"Flow"
30s
24 Mar 2017
The woman in this commercial for online streaming service Deezer claims that it can work out what she wants to listen to, even when she can't. It's been filmed to offer a sense of intimacy which helps to make it feel as though it's an option for grown-ups but you still can't help wondering what advantage it holds over the competition.

ITV Racing
"Grand National"
60s
26 Mar 2017
John Cooper Clarke and The Maccabees's 'Pelican' combine to give this ITV Racing promo terrific energy. The broadcaster taps into how the annual Aintree meeting captures the nation's imagination - and turns us all into racing savants. Form goes out the window when it comes to picking a contender; instead, it's all about "their colours and their funny names".
