UK Cars

This Hyundai ad sees motorists across the land awake to a sizeable delivery. It turns out the car manufacturer has streamlined the whole car-buying process by letting us buy online. Lord knows how all that cardboard is going to fit in the recycling bin.

The ad has fun with the concept of deliverable cars; we especially like the idea of our faithful butler doing the unboxing. Alas, the Hyundai website says “box not included”. Shame.

Still, it’s an intriguing proposition. Consumers are increasingly comfortable making large-scale purchases online, and it says a lot about the brand’s confidence in their vehicles that we don’t even need to see them in person. Car salesmen must be hoping they’re not made obsolete in the near future.

This short film follows a band as they travel to and prepare for a gig. But this is a band we - the population in general - would not expect to exist. Because of our prejudices, we tend to assume folk with learning disabilities and differences such as autism aren't capable of coming together in this way. 'We Rise' challenges this assumption with energy, skill, and consummate grace.

Despite shuffling off this mortal coil in 2013, Tom Clancy’s name still adorns Ubisoft’s range of tactical shooters. The latest is ‘Ghost Recon: Wildlands’, and this live-action ad directed by John McTiernan sets the scene with some feline help. While three hardmen play cards, a cat notices a red dot dancing around the room - which doesn't bode well for these three gents.

This energetic spot from Subaru taps into the trend for rapid-fire editing popular in car ads at the moment. A tight 30" is just the right amount of time to show off the vehicle and create a sense of adventure, presenting 'the few who dare to keep moving' (teachers, inventors, scholars, artists) while the voiceover tells us to 'never sit still'.

"Extra Savings"

Harveys plonk “extra savings” on top of their existing winter discounts. We’re shown three sofas worthy of having their prices slashed while the VO emphasises each saving with terminal enthusiasm. Still, at least the retailer’s recent ads featuring mischievous customers angling for a new sofa are fresh in the memory.

Herbal Essences

There's the germ of an idea in this ad for Herbal Essences' 'Daily Detox' collection - the animated illustrations of hair stresses (pollution, hairspray, sweat) which add a layer to the run of the mill script. Sadly things quickly fall back on cliché, with the glossy swishes, hair-smelling, and random dancing shots typical of shampoo advertising everywhere.

Some Channel 4 viewers will have been caught off-guard while watching ‘A New Life in the Sun’ on Wednesday afternoon. After all, it’s not every day you see a live colonoscopy take place. Eager to remind audiences how the charity is tackling the disease in real-time, we’re shown how a potentially cancerous bowel polyp is removed.

This ad for Holland's largest shopping centre - Hoog Catharijne - is about as stylish as it gets: it's also a huge amount of fun. Against a bouncy soundtrack and colourful pastel backgrounds, actors jump, dance, and play while showing off some of the products available in the centre's 160+ stores. There are also some lovely bits of quirky stop motion work added in for good measure.

Audiophiles will appreciate these well-shot films for MQA. A woman hitting the treadmill and a man enjoying some light reading are joined by hip hop artist Michael Ellison and and cellist Edgar Moreau respectively. Skilful transitions and lighting convey how music fans can enjoy immersive sound with the advertised audio format.

The insurer has included everything from treats to health products in each box - and they’ve recruited the ideal delivery service. The idea taps into the popularity of subscription boxes while suggesting the insurer goes the extra mile for its customers.

This surreal film by Oscar Hudson is 'about staying indoors'. It explores the Japanese phenomenon of hikikomori - young people so overwhelmed by life that they retreat to their bedrooms for years at a time. All the effects were done practically in camera, with the production team building eighteen almost identical rooms and props in multiple sizes.

North London Waste Authority
"A Message From The Netherlands"

This funny ad for the North London Waste Authority features a hapless young man explaining how he can't buy decent trainers since the Netherlands ran out of plastic. Instead he has to wear wooden clogs... which get him soundly rebuffed by a potential date at the bar. If only people had recycled more - then at least he could get knocked back with cool shoes on.

Dispatches are investigating the cheap clothing industry in the UK, where people are being paid half the living wage to produce the latest high street fashions. This trail for the programme is skilfully animated, getting its point across with a cut paper effect and jagged graphics which sync up effectively with the soundtrack.

This promo for Channel 4's beleaguered reality show 'The Jump' features the plangent vocals of Westlife. 'Flying Without Wings' accompanies shots of this year's batch of celebrities flying over a snowy landscape, with appropriately transcendent expressions as they perform improbable acrobatic feats.

This slick ad for Virgin Media Ireland takes us through a technological graveyard where obsolete TV sets go to die. Cleverly chosen film clips create an eerie atmosphere to show that this technology's era has passed... while a mysterious red cable snakes its way through the carcasses. The 'way of the future' turns out to be a huge pulsing orb depicting the new era of TV on Virgin Media. Intriguing stuff.

This is an interesting approach to car safety from New Zealand. While we watch a young man endure physiotherapy after a traffic collision, the older-sounding narrator describes how the incident occurred. Turns out the young man was at fault and suffered the worst. Is he bitter? No - he’s thankful his life was saved by the narrator travelling at a safe speed.

Something interesting always happens when an agency like W+K gets into bed with a client like Sainsbury's and so it proves with the agency's début TV work for its big new client. Orange Supermarket has been placed at the forefront of a new movement called #fooddancing by an ad with an earwormy soundtrack from MysDiggi combined with a montage that's been made to look as though it's been clandestinely filmed in our actual kitchens.

The country’s trade union alliance has released this lengthy film championing workers’ rights for, erm, artificial intelligence. That includes automated answering services, chatbots, and even spambots, bless ‘em. A novel way of promoting union membership in the digital era.

Bupa’s recent moving depiction of recovery added new depth to their message. This 30” commercial widens the scope by showing numerous individuals enjoying life after injury or illness. The healthcare provider believes true care goes beyond health insurance, and that their range of services can help patients return to normality sooner.

Malcom the cat - who for some reason never took off like Aleksandr and Sergei despite being voiced by Rupert Everett - returns: still grumpy, still hungry, and still thwarted by his inconsiderate humans. If they'd only give him some of their dinner, Malcom moans, then he could get back to having his 'pick of the ladies' instead of focusing all his energy on fish.

Aldi’s animal farm continues to grow. The supermarket tells us shoppers don’t like “big bills” in January… which doesn’t do Duncan the duck any favours. While he waddles off chastened, we’re shown how small Aldi’s grocery bill is. Decent performance from Duncan - we like to think he would’ve accepted that loaf of bread as payment.

There's a stylish mix of animation, CG, and live action in this energetic ad for Virgin Active. An upbeat soundtrack accompanies visuals of people making the most of their gym facilities, while the shots are enhanced by animated extensions of the action. We particularly like the classic video game sound effects and scores on the woman in the yellow shirt - having an HP bar at the gym would be great.

BBC Creative asks a wide variety of rugby fans what makes them proudest about their teams and homelands ahead of the Six Nations. The answers range from Johnny Wilkinson to white van men to kilts and haggis, and the diversity of what makes people proud of their country is both amusing and heartening.

Marks and Sparks bring back their dine in for a tenner deal in this brief spot. The offer of an indulgently tasty ready meal with free plonk is sure to provide a pick-me-up in the middle of a dreary January, and the food photography is - as ever - something to be admired.

Despite the lackluster voiceover from Olympic Gold Medalist Adam Peaty, we have to hand it to Quorn for managing to make their chunks of chicken-esque non-meat look edible in a Thai green curry. Adam doesn't sound as enthused though - that might be the least energetic exclamation of "Sound!" we've ever heard.
