"The Evolution of Stunts"
2 mins 20s

UK Cars

This extraordinary piece of branded content has stunt performer Damien Walters recreating some of the most famous stunts in movie history. It's great fun seeing how many you can identify and we're not going to spoil it for you by listing them all... but you could always use the Comments section to see if you can.

Channel 4 and Honda are familiar bedfellows and together they put some really memorable content in the ad breaks. They famously collaborated on an entire live ad break in 2008 - which was probably the most difficult piece of 'event' TV advertising ever attempted - and they are continually looking for ways to push the envelope.

Honda's hard-working engineers gather for a night in front of the box in these Film on 4 bumpers. The factory floor staff meet in the control room for a flick and plenty of pizza and even the robot polishing arm gets to enjoy some leisure time. They're fun spots which also suggest the car manufacturer cares about employee morale. Clever.

PES is quite rightly revered in the world of advertising and beyond for his extraordinary ability to create beautiful pieces of film using in-camera special effects. His distinctive style has been copied by others but no one ever quite manages to hit his level. And the wannabes will need to learn some new tricks after watching this amazing film which uses an innovative technique to create an outcome that's similar but different to his previous work.

Okay, singing sheep - so what's not to love? This is clearly going to be one of the most talked about ads of next weekend's Super Bowl, yet its real strength is not its cuteness but the way it draws attention to a terrific piece of product innovation. If you spend much of your working life in and - crucially - around your vehicle, wouldn't it be fantastic to take the stereo outside?

The opening of a garage door creates a world of possibilities according to this superbly crafted ad for the Honda Jazz. Once the open road lies ahead for this couple, anything and everything is worth a shot. Bach, beekeeping... throw in stargazing, archery, and kite flying and you've got enough pursuits to trump everyone in the "so what did you do at the weekend?" stakes.

This US Honda ad with extra sweetener proclaims that Christmas is a time for paying your local dealership a visit. To illustrate this, a giant hand opens and closes the door to various scenes of festive cheer featuring a Honda... though it does appear the two kids throwing snowballs at the start have been launched at the side of their house. Ouch.

Impressive as this is, you have to wonder why Honda keep making the same commercial over and over again. We get it... you have a grand history! Now impress us with your cars or - better still - persuade us that you haven't been fudging your emissions tests and your diesel cars aren't fogging up the environment. Say something, goddamn it!

This animated commercial depicting Honda's history is an epic triumph... but what else would you expect from PES? Months of work have gone into creating this film using a technique that must require quite unbelievable levels of patience and dedication but prove entirely worth it. Even though it mines a familiar seam for the Japanese car maker, it feels completely fresh.

Honda tends to make commanding, challenging and intelligent ads. Some of them leave us to join the dots ourselves, others literally spell their message out - but never half-heartedly and always with chutzpah. This launch spot for the Honda HR-V communicates the brand's obsession with engineering perfectionism; marrying its mechanical precision to the movement of its human counterparts.

13 Aug 2015
This stunning piece of work doesn't necessarily communicate its message in the clearest way, but its momentousness stays with you. Opening with Honda's famous ASIMO robot, it goes on to depict a 'space convoy': a display of its vehicles in the shape of a rocket to suggest Honda thinks bigger, further, and more ambitiously than any other car manufacturer.

ASIMO the robot is among the Honda personnel getting ready for a major announcement. August 14th will see Channel 4 lift the curtain on... well, being a teaser, we're not sure what yet. Judging by the revving engines and the determined look on the driver's face, it suggests something high-octane. Honda have delivered on this kind of promise before, so let's wait and see if they can do it again.

And we'd always assumed you go back to the toy shop when things break. Or at least fetch the super-glue. As this imaginative Australian ad for Honda shows, there's a much more colourful reality. When a little girl's beloved pink horsie suffers an unfortunate head injury, the family take a drive out to the Ranch of the Rainbow - home of prismatic horses of every conceivable shade and hue.

More impressive Smith & Foulksiness for Honda in a US ad demonstrating that their latest model has distilled all the wisdom of their other offerings. Various cars slip into one another like matryoshka dolls until their latest car emerges from an SUV as it's revealed that it has all the best qualities of the others we've seen.

"HR-V Crossover Give and Take"

This is a commercial about hitting the sweet spot which, appropriately enough, hits the sweet spot. It shows a number of people manipulating their own faces in an effort to find perfection but finding that when they push in one place, it inevitably creates an unwanted outcome somewhere else.

"Feeling"

This is a ridiculously gorgeous piece of filmmaking. It's one of those commercials where you'd be really interested to know what the other treatments looked like because - with all due respect to those who were up for this - it's hard to imagine anyone came up with anything that looked quite like Johnny Hardstaff's vision.

After their triumph at last month's Arrows for The Dark Side, here's another arresting piece of work from Honda offering online interaction... this time from mcgarrybowen. By watching the ad on YouTube, viewers can adjust the timezone to produce subtle changes to the endless road. (The TV version we've provided offers a non-interactive taste but for the full effect, please click the link.)

"New Civic"

This short spot for the new Honda Civic follows the style of the excellent longer spot for Honda generally, which riffs on the philosophy of always aiming to improve. It manages to fit in the message about five years' free servicing without the aid of a babbling VO, and suggests the advertised car is rammed with attitude. Way to go.

Honda
"Keep Up"

16 Feb 2015
This terrific spot for Honda only features cars in the last few seconds. For the most part, it's a fixed backdrop which looks like the Utah Salt Flats. On this empty and arid stage appear supers, centre screen, addressing us directly. What happens if we move out of our comfort zone? If we REALLY push ourselves? To improve and improve and get to be better, faster?

"Dream Run"

This excellent ad from Australia is very funny indeed. A man reading a book about lucid dreaming in a café suddenly realises everything's a bit surreal, which disconcerts him. Going outside, he sees military men with loudhailers telling him to "Wake up, Brian!" - and he makes a run for it. Thankfully, a Honda literally materialises around him...

This devilishly clever piece of work by W+K for Honda enables an online viewer to switch between two contrasting narratives when they watch the ad on YouTube. DAVID thoroughly recommends that you click the link and watch it as it was designed to be seen but - for your convenience - we've run off a version that switches between the two edits to give you a sense of the experience.

"Hot & Cold"

As a temperature dial is turned, a correlating vignette rotates to show an abandoned car and bleached skeleton out in a desert - heated by an oven grill - transformed into a scene of Arctic iciness and back. The premise is that the Civic is reliable in the extreme (from -30°C to +80°C). It's visually very creative, but despite the engine starting first time, doesn't that skeleton suggest a certain amount of worry?

Honda
"Disruption"

9 Jul 2014
After starting off like the corniest-looking ad in the history of corn, this breaks into something else altogether. It's a clever notion and one that's plainly designed to suggest the Honda is an edgier choice than you might have imagined it to be. The imagery it uses is excellent but we'd quite like to have seen it return to the original scenario at the end with the family suitably horrified.

"Roar"

13 Jun 2014
Hear the Audi Honda roar! Actually, that's a bit unfair... while this has obvious similarities to a popular ad for the German car, this has more than enough about it to dodge that kind of cheap criticism and we're genuinely ashamed of ourselves. The visibility of the workshop as the engine roars is a neat conceit and it's been cleverly executed.

Honda
"Super Sport"
80s
19 Feb 2014
A selection of exaggerated stereotypes - the golfer, the yoga lover, the art collector - are busy doing their thing when a motorcyclist speeds past on a Honda and shatters their calm. The premise is that some of us need a little more stimulation to find our 'headspace', and by poking affectionate fun at folk who like their pastimes to be slower it hints that Honda riders like to set a higher bar for themselves.

Honda
"Inside Out"
30s
4 Feb 2014
This is a rather long-winded way of saying that the car in question is surprisingly spacious. From golf balls to suitcases we're taken on a seamless journey through the interiors of various items to satisfy “those who like the inside as much as the outside”. We kind of understand where Honda is going – the notion that there's more under the surface than you'd think – but it doesn't address the fact that it's volume rather than density which dictates how much you can squash into a vehicle.
