There are few directors whose style is as distinctive as Wes Anderson and no self-respecting movie fan could look at this without immediately recognising it as his work. All of Anderson's familiar trickery has been deployed but don't let that fool you into thinking a square peg has been lodged into a round hole - the effect is entirely on point and is directed towards creating an utterly charming Christmas commercial.

Frequent Anderson collaborator Adrien Brody plays Conductor Ralph who has to inform his passengers that they are going to have to spend Christmas Day aboard his train.

Ralph is a man for a crisis. Displaying something of the resourcefulness which characterised Monsieur Gustave - the concierge brilliantly played by Ralph Fiennes in Anderson's 'The Grand Budapest Hotel' - the conductor draws on his knowledge and contacts to coolly assemble an improvised Christmas for all of those on board.

Imbued with the timelessness of Anderson's glorious production design, it reminds us of the true spirit of the season. After all, which Christmas are we more likely to remember? One where everything happens as it should thanks to a well-organised trudge through the rituals? Or one where you were stuck on a train with a collection of disparate souls making the best of a strange situation?

An obvious paradox is created by TV commercials nudging us towards a celebration of Christmas less concerned with consumerism. But let's suspend our disbelief for a few minutes and revel in this beautifully rendered scenario... especially as it's never felt more important to 'love thy neighbour' than it does as 2016 draws to a close.

It's heartening to see H&M following the advertising zeitgeist of showing their customers more than just gorgeous models wearing their clothes. DAVID is impressed with the diversity of cast here, showing us many different ways to be 'a lady' and treating them all as equally valid. H&M's new campaign for autumn 2016 is accompanied by a new version of 'She's a lady,' created and performed by Lion Babe.

This excerpt from H&M's longer ad for their autumn campaign features actress and trans activist Hari Nef and Fatima Pinto, one of the top Muay Thai fighters in the world. H&M show us there's no one way to be a woman with this campaign. Their message is clear: all kinds of women are welcome in their stores, and they don't care what anyone thinks about it.

H & M's odd couple of David Beckham and Kevin Hart hit the road to Las Vegas... or ruin, more like. Seems like the latter has decided 'I, Beckham' would work better as a musical, and David is last to know as always. Once again identically dressed in the retailer's threads, the duo pick up from where they left off last year with two likeable performances.

There are some groovy little movers and shakers out there, folks: it's always a bit sobering when a pre-schooler can strut their stuff better than you can. This spot shows how the kids with the best breaks are cooler than liquid nitrogen and invariably dressed in H&M. It's a lovely bit of filming - each member of this crew, from tots to teens and in-between - are perfectly at home in front of the camera, though maybe a tighter edit would give it even more impact.

This year's Coachella festival may have been and gone, but the California magnet for the young, the hip, and the famous lives on in this evocative H & M commercial. To a breezy rendition of 'California Dreamin'', a diverse band of free spirits turn deserts, housing estates, and rooftops into their own party havens. By dressing in the retailer's Coachella-inspired threads, they can supposedly channel the spirit of the festival all year round.

Bright-eyed and possessing an appreciation of 1970s soul music, the cast of this H & M commercial produces a sugar-sweet rendition of Chairmen of the Board's 'Everybody's Got A Song To Sing' while modelling the retailer's collection of children's threads. It's definitely an Americanized depiction of playtime, but the sunny photography does a good job of presenting H & M's spring summer range for the teeny and trendy.

A stylish spot for H&M featuring supermodels Mica Arganaraz and Rianne van Rompaey, who swan around various cities looking leggy and luscious. While the clothes would probably look like a heap of curtains on anyone under 6' 5", the vibe is lovely - mostly thanks to the atmospheric instrumental by wunderkind musician-producer Mura Masa.

Having previously taken advantage of David Beckham's hitherto untapped comedic potential, H & M bring back the man in his capacity as someone - in the parlance of Derek Zoolander - really, really, ridiculously good looking. The ad has Becks hitting the town while wearing items from his Modern Essentials range. Turns out the whole town has the same idea.

"Katie Perry"

H&M's Katie Perry special has the same effect as a surfeit of butter icing. Dressed mostly as a Christmas tree fairy, she hovers over the festive spectacle of tin soldiers, polar bears and candy canes singing her lungs out. It's lavishly done and everything, but is too Americanised for our more restrained sensibilities and her wish that we should have "happy and merry holidays" is, quite frankly, excessive.

The full version of the film so brilliantly teased last time out has landed and it's fair to say that H & M's unorthodox pairing of David Beckham and Kevin Hart delivers in its near-seven minute form. The 'I, Beckham' movie is in the works - not that poor David is in the loop - and leading man Kevin is keen to go beyond Method for the role. Armed with notes and a blissful ignorance of boundaries, he sets out to find just what makes Goldenballs tick.

In this minute-and-a-half-long paean to Autumn style, we have a beautiful couple strolling around somewhere classily European with a somnolence borne of their own and each other's gorgeousness. French singer Petite Meller regales us with a breathy version of The Velvet Underground's 'Sunday Morning' as the pair wander about looking suitably retro, and the whole piece is shot as if on home movie film. Very 60s, and very gorgeous.

It's time to scrap the 'golden rule' when it comes to working with David Beckham which was - as many of you will probably remember - whatever you do, don't give him a line. In this teaser for H&M, Beckham puts in such a naturalistic performance that it's hard to imagine acting has ever been a problem for him and much of the credit for that has to go to director Fredrik Bond.

The message behind this excellent piece of communication from H&M may be a little flawed but you can't fault its execution. Iggy Pop's VO urges everyone to break the rules of fashion... and as is so beautifully demonstrated, the sheer number and diversity of those rules are legion. We shouldn't require companies to have an unblemished record in all areas of business before we allow them to proffer an important message about the environment and this is a really attention-grabbing piece of work.

Attractive photography combined with sharp editing and a well-chosen track are the usual elements in an H & M ad and all three are on display here. H & M aren't necessarily the first retailer that you'd associate with the 'back to school' proposition but who says school uniforms are the only clothing the children will need at the end of the summer holidays?

International tennis star Tomas Berdych is one of H&M's new style ambassadors for Autumn and Winter, and in this spot we see him and an unidentified female athlete (anyone?) working out in various H&M activewear gear on a rooftop gym. It's all rather classily done, and if nothing else you have to admire the strength of his friend's triceps.

An inordinate amount of time is spent showing a quartet of busy models each getting an urgent call that makes them drop everything and head off to a beach to sashay about in H&M-wear. Frankly we can't imagine feeling so pumped up about a swimwear collection to skydive into the requisite location, but then no-one here at DAVID is, as they say, beach body ready. Or ever likely to be.

A very sweet spot for H & M featuring their childrenswear for spring and summer. The tots all look like they're having a fun time and manage to be cute and sassy without being bratty or precocious - quite a feat of casting, we'd say. The ad showcases the new season's togs well, too... parents across the land will be thinking how adorable little Noah / Nora will seem kitted out in them. And so cheaply! That Mulberry handbag is still attainable after all, non?

David Beckham once again lends his distinctive brand of cool to H & M and this time, instead of running around in his underpants he's taking on some tough guys in a pool hall. This was directed by Marc Forster who was responsible for Quantum of Solace so we should probably just be grateful that it's not incoherent and that the Goldenballs rule has been applied - not a single utterance from Beckham's mouth to undermine his immaculate appearance.

The shorter broadcast version of the new H & M ad featuring David Beckham doesn't really lose much and seems to contain just as many items from the Swedish clothes retailer's range as its 50" cousin. This is possibly the first time DAVID has seen the phrase 'bomber jacket' since the early 1980s and he can't say he's missed it.

"Magical Holidays"

H&M's Christmas ad comes out all guns blazing, with big hitting names for young and old in the form of Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga duetting a razzmatazz swing number. Bennett is truly old now but still has that unmistakable twinkle, while Gaga, resplendent in Cher-style wig, looks slightly other worldy. The performance is tightly packed with goodies, as you'll realise at the end.

A leggy model (really, is there any other kind?) saunters down the steps of some public building or other in an outfit that she can only just about get away with - any woman with slightly more padding or slightly less limb length is going to look like a mobile jumble sale. Indeed, the whole ad feels imbued with futility... mind you, in the current economic climate, futility is quite chic.

The high street fashion retailer has an uneven record when it comes to advertising, but this spot is definitely one to set its standards by. Promoting a new collection by designer Alexander Wang, it focuses on the upmarket, sporty nature of the items by giving the ad a video game vibe where the characters can somersault through walls and perform other impossible feats without breaking sweat.

H & M - or Hmm, as it's known in the DAVID household - is a funny beast. Rightfully popular for its decent-quality, good value gear, the shop itself is considered acceptably cool by DAVID's teenage girls, but the advertising is - in general - a bit uninspiring. This is very much their oeuvre... all trousers and no mouth, we regret to say.

Hmm. Part of H&M's appeal may be their internationalism but when this much US iconography is shoved into an ad being broadcast in the UK, it just makes us think they don't care about individual sensibilities. Still, if you want your little tyke to look as though he's going to address you as 'mom' before he runs towards the metal detector at the school gates, then these are for you.
