USA Whisky

In the latest in an enjoyable series for the divisive (and proud of it) single malt, Laphroaig bring together more whisky tasters in a room - this time in the spirit of Father's Day. As ever, the fun stems from the colourful responses to each sip of the formidable Islay dram. Whether it brings to mind smoked fish or a hypothetical camping trip, the whisky inspires a warm bonding session for all involved.

The lyrical approach once again pays dividends for Laphroaig as they enlist the services of poet Elvis McGonagall just in time for Burns Night. Melodic to some, incomprehensible to others(!), McGonagall's reading encapsulates the single malt's robust constitution and embraces its divisive reputation. Another lively celebration of language and whisky.

Even before the whisky is uncorked, this granny has plenty on her mind as Laphroaig gauge more opinions on Thanksgiving. The reactions of this family range from the poetic to pitching a new method of nose hair removal, but the fiery spirit ensnares the senses of everyone present. Being able to order it in a bar may be a challenge for another day though.

Poets and Islay residents have had the chance to chime in, now it's the turn of our American brethren to give their colourful tasting notes in the latest instalment of this campaign for Laphroaig - the twist this time round is getting a family to sample the drink together. With the spoils of Thanksgiving consumed, it's time to taste something much stronger than pumpkin pie.

The poets have had their say, now it's time to hear what the residents of Islay have to say about Laphoraig. Those wary of listening to talk of "hints of this" and "suggestions of that" when it comes to whisky will find these unique and colourful perspectives on the single malt far more engaging. For some it's history in a glass, for others it's drinking "burnt knickers", but one thing is for certain - it's a single malt that gets people talking,

How the hell do you sell a whisky with a name like Laphroaig? You can hardly claim that it's something just anyone might opt to drink... apart from anything else the majority of punters would, ahem, lose their bottle before they dared to give the pronunciation a go. Better then to recognise that the target market for Laphroaig is quite specialised and customise an approach likely to appeal to their sensibilities even if it might leave everyone else thinking they're a bit up themselves.

Laphroaig - a product we cannot spell, much less pronounce - sets out its stall to be the 'Marmite of whiskies' in this candid commercial containing various people's assessments of the drink. " I can even smell the seagulls' armpits" says one man, who seems surprisingly positive later on. Not everyone comes round to it, but it's not a bad ploy - it manages to suggest that if you don't like this particular malt, it's probably because you lack sophistication.
