USA Tea

With all the dramatic and hard-hitting sports-based ads around, it's nice to know that sometimes even the athletically gifted enjoy a cup of tea and a sit down. The connection between surfer Keala Kennelly throwing herself into treacherous waves and caffeinated beverages may be tenuous, but this beautifully-shot film feels inspiring nonetheless.

Given The Nightly Show’s flatlining ratings, you’d think ITV would’ve given their old mucker Michael Parkinson a ring by now. Not that the chat show legend is short of work - he’s now heading Yorkshire Tea’s hiring committee. “Good lad” Ali Malik joins the illustrious likes of Billy Connolly and Muhammed Ali in being grilled by Parky. Nice ringtone, by the way.

A new instalment of Twining's colourful animated campaign focuses on their range of fruit infusions. While some tea traditionalists may flinch at the prospect of sullying their precious beverage with the likes of blackcurrant and blueberry or lemon and ginger, it's hard not to be charmed by the bright stop-motion and whimsical soundtrack.

More stellar work from Lucky Generals for Yorkshire Tea, this time featuring the much-loved Brownlee Brothers . No length is too far for the company who pride themselves on doing things 'proper', and the lads swim, cycle and, er, power walk to make sure their urgent tea delivery is made on time.

Yorkshire Tea aren’t fans of ‘on hold’ music. Smooth jazz, panpipes, questionable cover versions… none of which are their, well, cup of tea. So the Harrogate-based company has come up with a better solution: live music from Kaiser Chiefs. When the receptionist puts a caller on hold, we get an amusingly truncated blast of the band’s signature hit, ‘I Predict a Riot’.

This charming ad for Lipton is as soothing as the hot cup of tea it advertises. To a calm acoustic soundtrack, it tells the story of an unlikely friendship as a lonely young boy and his school bus driver look out for each other. After noticing the perpetually-late kid doesn't have any friends, the kindly driver reaches out one morning to give him a small gesture of solidarity.

Colin - the 'head brewer, perfection pursuer' - is the 'tea-jay' of his office, and he's here to tell us all about it in this cracking ad by Rubber Republic for Yorkshire Tea. With his low-rider trolley and shawl-collared cardi, Colin is a rapper extraordinaire with Northern fire in his belly and a take-no-prisoners attitude.

Tetley tap into the current superhero craze with this ad for their Super Tea range. This caped crusader returns to HQ in dire need of a cuppa. Luckily, her chief boffin has a healthy pick-me-up waiting. It's a playful shift from the brand's traditional brews, while there are some fun touches nestled throughout - film buffs in particular will be pleased by a faint Wilhelm scream in the background.

This long and leisurely spot for family-run business Punjana Tea meanders around from their Irish HQ to their tea fields in East Kenya and back. While the message that their interpretation of 'ordinary' is everyone else's 'special' would be better condensed into thirty seconds, it's nonetheless been filmed with a lot of love and care.

Now enjoying life as a solo act following years at Johnny Vegas's gaff, Monkey once again espouses the virtues of the simple life with this fun PG Tips ad. Keen to give his body a "good old spring clean", it's apparent the knitted primate's hasn't prepared himself for what's awaiting his, ahem, "back door". The quick cuts between him and the nurse build the humorous unease nicely, and his switch to plan T(ea) conveys the brand's uncomplicated philosophy just as well.

Typhoo Tea

18 Apr 2016
Despite enlisting the services of culinary temptress Nigella Lawson, it's safe to say few pulses will be raised by this Typhoo Tea ad. When she isn't fondling foodstuffs in a suggestive manner, we're led to believe that Nigella likes nothing more than to lounge on the sofa with a brew. Content to play it safe, the end result is lukewarm at best.

Iconic British figures and events get an airing in this nostalgia-laden spot for Tetley Tea. Could it be possible that this island's moments of greatness were made possible by the fortifying effects of a cuppa? Where would Flo Nightingale have been without a brew - and would England have done so well in '66 if they hadn't had a pot beforehand? We can only speculate.

Monkey explains that while essence of Jupiter is handy for coping strategies, and pine nuts do the job where past life stress is concerned, good old fashioned PG Tips is the bees knees when it comes to preserving sanity. It's a simple, amusing spot that gets its point across in ten unhurried seconds - nice one, Monkey.

Rogue Films's Saam Farahmand harnesses the spectacle of Cirque du Soleil for a brew like no other in this ad for the T.O. by Lipton machine. Tea infusion becomes a work of art as these colourful performers blend with the water in hypnotic fashion. As Brits know all too well, there is an art to making the perfect cup of tea, so the sublime craftsmanship behind this ad should win plenty of admirers.

These little shorts for PG Tips feature Monkey in a variety of minimalist white settings, opting for a straightforward cuppa over the fanciful tongue-twisting trends du jour. Or, in one case, ruing his decision to have a vajazzle when it can't be shown on TV. Which begs the question: isn't Monkey male, to all intents and purposes?

Yorkshire Tea

It's no secret that Britain takes tea rather seriously... so it's no surprise Yorkshire Tea takes it very seriously indeed. In fact, tea is very much at the centre of their universe. Factory worker Brian gets more than he bargained for when his scrunched-up bit of paper fails to find the bin. His mercurial colleague takes the opportunity to fill him in on the brand's devotion to doing things "proper".

This new commercial for Clipper, which was preceded by an intriguing 10-second teaser, features a truly lovely animation by directorial duo Andersen M. The ad reminds us how unnatural things can look when they're the wrong colour... and connects this to the revelation that the advertised tea comes in bags that haven't been bleached.

Clipper Tea announces 'an advertising premier' in this attractively-animated teaser, where an angular pink and black bee buzzes among some meadow flowers. And indeed we are intrigued: what can possibly be so exciting about a cuppa commercial that it warrants making a date with the telly to view it? No doubt we will soon see.

There's some really lovely animation in this Twinings ad focusing on the feeling we're given by that first cup of tea. As you know, all Britons are properly addicted to the stuff, and most will recognise this depiction of the moment when the brain is sharpened by the first slurp. Out of the seemingly impenetrable fog of post-sleep bleariness, our minds come blinking into the sunlight of full cognitive engagement.

In this short spot for PG Tips supporting Red Nose Day, Monkey tells us there's no point in being a celebrity if you can't wear a red ping pong ball on your proboscis. Only not in those words. The brand is aiming to raise £1m for the charity but it's only if you're determined to try and read the small print that you discover 8p will be donated for every Red Nose pack bought. That's a lot of tea they're hoping to sell.

Having resolved an alien invasion in the last commercial, the clever tea folk bring an end to a medieval conflict that they don't understand. It's the latest instalment in a campaign based on the idea that if only people would sit down and have a nice cup of tea together then the world would be a happier place. Maybe that's what Seth Rogan and James Franco should have been doing in North Korea... making tea for Kim Jong-un.

Rosemary Shrager and Michael Vaughan are the all-important judges in a competition between two rival cricket clubs in this engaging ad for Yorkshire Tea. The winner will be granted £10,000 for a new clubhouse but the battleground is not the field of play - instead, it's the ad-hoc kitchen where the tea is made for the twenty minute interval. Winning stuff.

This spot for PG Tips fruit, herbal and green teas is fun, but it nonetheless has a Jonny Vegas-sized hole at its core despite its colourful distractions. Monkey is trying out the new range and experiences something of a carnival in his mouth as a result. His inner monkey gets busy with some orange bongos while balancing a Carmen Miranda-style creation on his bonce, and at least you get the sense these are drinks packed with flavour.

The camera follows a trail of minor havoc in a house while chiming music plays in a way that evokes magic and childlike suspense. Past overturned houseplants and abandoned toys we go, until we see a small boy's toy car - the culprit - overturned, and the boy sleeping blamelessly on the carpet. Cutting to a cup of calming camomile tea, we're told the moral is "don't drink and drive" - sweet enough, but you do wonder what kind of youngster drinks such a brew.
