The Atlantic
"Typecast"
2 mins 50s
16 February 2017
USA Magazines

The Atlantic's first brand campaign in a decade sees esteemed actor Michael K. Williams - veteran of 'The Wire' and 'Boardwalk Empire' - reprising some of his best-loved characters as he explores the question of his own identity.

The film shows four different versions of the actor examining whether or not he's typecast in his career and how that has affected him. The script isn't shy about addressing racial and political issues (Williams muses he'll always be playing some type of gangster), including a funny yet poignant extended metaphor which asks whether a cat can ever pass as a poodle.

It's a truly brilliant performance from Williams, who embodies the separate characters masterfully. An opportunity for the actor to 'un-typecast' himself, he's by turns sensitive and snappy with a hefty dose of self-awareness thrown into the mix. Thought-provoking stuff which leaves the central issue open-ended: is all casting typecasting?

In this age of leaks, spoilers, and whistleblowers, clandestine organisations have it tougher than ever. Avocados from Mexico’s amusing Super Bowl commercial highlights the difficulty in keeping things under wraps. One can’t help feel sorry for this concerned leader as his acolytes vex him with supposed leaks.

Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti must take a relaxed stance on team preparation if he's willing to let his star players cruise the streets of New York City. Still, it's Audi's gain as this Manhattan-set caper sees Jérôme Boateng, Thiago, Franck Ribéry, and Arturo Vidal compete to unearth the city's hidden talent. An unorthodox scouting technique, perhaps, but a speedy one at that.

As 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' so memorably showed us, stifling one's amusement at a verbal quirk can be a trial. This man's chances of holding it together lessen with each suggestive pronunciation of the word "banking" by a French finance expert. Hardly helpful for his career prospects, but playing a National Lottery GameStore scratchcard on his phone at least offers a one in four chance of success.

The reputation of IT departments won't be enhanced any time soon by this wry little number. The pc user ringing for help has more chance of winning with the National Lottery Gamestore than seeing the tech guy appear in her office - a one in four chance, to be precise. Love the moment at the end, too, with her British restraint allowing her no more than a Paddington stare as he joins her at the bus stop.

Another humorous ad for National Lottery GameStore depicts a charity mugger (or 'chugger', to use the technical term) facing an uphill struggle when canvassing for donations. Who would've thought sympathy for the bankers was in such short supply, eh? Back in her civvies, this woman's chances of success seem more favourable with a scratchcard. Just don't try asking for a moment of her time.

"Farmer"

16 Feb 2016
This agreeably silly commercial for the National Lottery's line of GameStore amusements has an off-screen man asking a couple of women if they fancy being shown around a farmer's market. Sadly, the voice belongs to a cow farmer with his arm occupied where the sun don't shine. Their interest quickly dissipates and his chances meet a pile of manure. Never mind, though - he's got a one-in-four chance with a Lotto app game.

Snickers
"Marilyn"

4 Feb 2016
This may not reach the heights of last year's Super Bowl ad, but Snickers still manage to raise a smile thanks to the agreeable sight of Willem Dafoe in Marilyn Monroe's dress. Production on 'The Seven Year Itch' hits a snag when Dafoe gives some incredulous notes on the famous grate scene. As it turns out, a Snickers is all Marilyn needs to return to her glamorous self.

Guacamole enthusiasts, sci-fi fans, and even 'Happy Days' aficionados (the Holy Trinity of demographics) will all find something to enjoy in this very funny Super Bowl ad by Avocados From Mexico. Leading a tourist group who wouldn't look out of place in the Mos Eisley Cantina, this museum guide provides a colourful insight into an assortment of earthly curiosities.

"Marilyn Monroe Teaser"
50s
26 Jan 2016
Snickers have a job on their hands topping last year's excellent 'The Brady Bunch' spoof, but this Super Bowl 50 teaser is promising. To the delight of the black-and-white crowd, a figure echoing 'Marilyn Monroe' is ushered on to the stage to give the occasion her signature birthday wishes. Only, she doesn't look quite as glamorous as we remember... and did she always sound suspiciously like Willem Dafoe?

Currys PC World
"Secret Santa"

5 Nov 2015
In this wry spot for Currys PC World, Jeff Goldblum gives some unsolicited advice to Russ, the employee at the office party who's already on "thin ice". Explaining the etiquette of Secret Santa, he encourages the hapless young man to think of the "naff" slogan mug his boss has given him as something that's actually cool - like a Google Chromecast device. But Russ is a bit slow on the uptake...

Easy charm and a beautiful head of hair aren't enough to save this chap's unsuccessful attempt at a Christmas dinner, but Jeff Goldblum ensures his family react with a little more encouragement... even if he can't act his way through a mouthful. Comedic brilliance, but judging by these outtakes, it's a Christmas miracle they managed to get all five of these ads done in time for November!

Currys PC World

Such is the quality of Currys PC World's Christmas campaign, we're almost hoping to receive at least one clunker of a gift this year if it means Jeff Goldblum suddenly materializes next to us. Next to receive some pointers is a man who's less than enthused by his partner's gift - peppermint-scented talc powder (we've looked it up and it's a real thing). As ever, Jeff is on hand to help turn that frown upside down...

Currys PC World's terrific Christmas campaign centres on the moments of strained enthusiasm we radiate when our nearest and dearest don't quite provide the Christmas of our dreams. What if we had someone to help coach us in the art of improving our 'bad gift' face? That's where Jeff Goldblum comes in.

The beauty of this whole campaign for Currys PC World is the way that at first we have no real idea where they're going. The cast look just as surprised as we are to see Goldblum's deus ex machina breeze into their homes and give them strangely intimate lessons on how to act when the gift received isn't from Currys PC World. Genius.

Another amusing BMW ad that demonstrates how the right choice of vehicle can help you make the most of an ugly or awkward situation. In a manner that will be familiar to many a weekend golfer, this chap loses all control once he's off the course. It's all worth it though - getting his pals to and from the golf course guarantees him at least two good drives.

The game is on for car manufacturers - particularly German ones - to place a considerable barge pole between themselves and the emissions scandal that threatens to fog the entire industry. Transparency and eco credentials will become prominent themes in this sector, but for now, BMW surprise us by showing their funny side.

Another amusing BMW ad that demonstrates how the right choice of vehicle can help you make the most of an ugly or awkward situation. A woman skilfully dumps all of her ex's possessions at his feet... while he finds it necessary to explain the situation to his neighbour. It doesn't say much about this poor schmo's lot in life, but it speaks volumes about the BMW X1's boot space.

Snickers
"The Brady Bunch"

30 Jan 2015
This spot for Snickers has been heavily trailed, so it's been common knowledge that Danny Trejo would star. Continuing the theme that 'you're not you when you're hungry', it takes footage from an episode of The Brady Bunch and pops Trejo - complete with axe - in the role of Marcia. But that's not all... there's an inspired little cameo at the end which propels this into the realms of 'watch on repeat'.

In another very amusing spot for bite-sized bars of confectionery, it's revealed to us why Twix Bites didn't appear sooner in the history of chocolate. Turns out personal cassette players and Billy Ocean were to blame. We suspect a lot of fun was had getting the styling right for this campaign, from the 70s flares in the Snickers ad to the 80s perms and shoulder pads in this one.

Very entertaining spot for bite-sized Snickers which purports to explain why such a good idea hadn't been thought of decades ago. Replete with 'leeezure' suits, flicks, and all the flammable synthetics you can shake a bell bottom at, it shows a marketing board meeting from the 1970s at which the notion is mooted but everyone's just to darned laidback to make it happen.

HBO Go
"What's He In?"
35s
22 Apr 2014
Brilliantly conceived, written and acted, this campaign for HBO Go gets straight to the heart of why young people need the service. As a teenage boy and girl try to watch Game of Thrones, their well-meaning mum and dad witter all the way through; asking who's married to who, and which one that actor is. The girl in particular is marvellous, and you can hear the homicidal steel in her voice as she says: "That's not him".

If you're old enough to remember, this will whisk you back to 1985 from the very first frame. A-ha's iconic song and illustrated video technique act as a brilliant set-up to what in fact is a free maintenance deal on new VWs in the States. Just as speedily as you're plunged into the past, you're yanked back to the here and now... very funny indeed.

A man in a gym uses exercise equipment to practice a particular motion designed to celebrate his team in this ad for a video game based around the college version of American football... which is kind of like their version of the Championship in English football terms.
