"Adventures in Wonderfood"
30s
6 January 2017
UK High Street Retailers

As supermarkets encourage a healthy start to 2017, Marks & Spencer showcase their “wonderfoods” selection. Colourful wraps, mosaics made of fruit and veg, and seafood with a splash are just some of the ways customers can enjoy a wholesome January. M&S being M&S, they make it look like an appealing proposition... obviously.

We're having to dig deep when another M&S's food ad hits our screens. Not that the work's bad, of course - it's still excellent. No, we're just trying to avoid repeating ourselves as this long-running campaign enters its final stretch. This latest instalment teases us with enough rich and savoury dishes to satisfy our appetites well into the New Year.

Marks & Spencer think they have the party season taped with their edible treats and nibbles. Another pyrotechnic display of food photography gives star billing to jelly Santa hats, seafood bites, and chocolates containing yet more sweeties. M&S's stellar food work has always been a consistent performer and it's contributed to another strong festive campaign.

"Season to Be Naughty"

20 Nov 2016
'Tis the season to be naughty as RKCR/Y&R pretty much define 'food porn' for M&S, complete with money shot. Will Clean Bandit ever break the association between their music and sumptuous puddings, sinful pastries, and seductive cakes once this campaign comes to an end? Probably not, but when the food looks this good we can't imagine why they'd want to.

More food, glorious food from Marks & Spencer as the retailer showcases their Christmas sweets. We've waxed lyrical about RKCR/Y&R's food work on numerous occasions, which just shows how consistently impressive this campaign has been. As the agency prepares to hand over the reins, this 20" ad presents chocolate star trees and gold-covered confectionary with signature panache.

And so a farewell to all this... perhaps. Marks & Spencer's decision to shift their business from one end of Martin Sorrell's corridor to another will see Grey London creating the retailer's advertising after their lengthy relationship with Rainey Kelly is brought to an end. It's pretty much impossible to fault the work created by the outgoing agency for M&S's food offer.

Sunday 12th June will see The Mall in St James's Park host The Patron's Lunch, a celebration of the Queen's unwavering support for charitable causes. For those who can't make it to the shindig proper, Marks & Spencer have a specially-picked range of picnic favourites to help get into the spirit of the occasion, with pork pies and trifles depicted with the store's customary razzle-dazzle.

Jolly nice as ever, this shortish spot for the Marks and Spencer Spirit of Summer range steers our thoughts towards barbecues and salads and the pleasure of eating outdoors. We can more or less smell the aromatic smoke and feel the heat of sizzling sausages stinging our eyeballs, while sticky marinades and the viscous juices of fruit dribble down our chins.

"Adventures in Rhythm"

This is almost the best of these films but the curious decision to return to the campaign's familiar music halfway through derails it a bit. It still deserves its five stars as the opening sequence is sensational... but what follows is a bit puzzling, the sequence is crying out for the music from the first half to keep playing.

"Adventures in Fiesta"

Marks & Spencer look to the Americas for inspiration as they strive to bring colourful nosh to our plates this summer. The campaign's familiar jingle receives a fiesta injection as the screen is painted with swirling tropical fruits, decorative chillies, and a carnival of fiery and refreshing tastes. Come rain or shine this summer, the retailer have the tastiest colour palette around.

Marks & Spencer have long since mastered their 10" technique, so it stands to reason their culinary spectacles no longer have quite the same impact. The campaign's familiar burst of Clean Bandit's 'Rather Be' still generates expectation, and this Easter-themed ad is infused with citrus and warm colours, all treated with signature panache by the photography department.

"Adventures in Which Came First"

Which came first, the chicken or the egg? Depends on the type of chicken / egg you're talking about. If they're from Marks & Spencer, the question's immaterial because they've both popped up at the same time, and some of them are even chicken and egg. How's that for messing with your head?

Roast chicken followed by choux buns, all washed down with an agreeable bottle of vino. As ever, it's impressive what a ten-second spot for Marks and Sparks can convey in terms of the quality of their food. We're now starting to think ahead and wonder in what direction they're planning to take their next campaign - visually this will be a hard act to follow.

More beautiful photography for M&S again, unsurprisingly. Its only problem is that it's too short, giving a slightly staccato feel and making it a touch difficult to process what you're looking at. By the time you've interpreted various images as starter, main and dessert it's all over, which is strangely disappointing.

Treat yourself to some smoked salmon parcels followed by a lemony delicacy this weekend - it's only a tenner for two and you can wash it down with a free bottle of plonk. As ever, the flawless photography makes any food offer from M&S seem classy, although in this instance the meal looks just a tad insubstantial.

"Adventures in Wonderfoods"

4 Jan 2016
The complexity and delicacy of these spots for M&S food get evermore intricate. So much so that the "wonderfoods" involved here are almost abstracted from themselves, depicting not so much an array of delicious products that are also wholesome and healthy, as a Mandelbrotian sequence of shapes and textures seen under a microscope.

"The Big Day"
30s
18 Dec 2015
The reliably sensational Marks & Spencer's Christmas work continues with a 30" film concentrating on the big day itself. M&S have set new standards for food photography this year. Having said that, there are signs here that the techniques are starting to repeat themselves and it may not be too long before a new approach is needed and that's partly because these are so distinctive.

"Adventures In Stars"

26 Nov 2015
Another helping of food perfection for Marks & Spencer's Christmas offer. Elements of this appear in their main ad but this consistently brilliant work is always worth another look and the concentration of sugary treats is certainly part of the seasonal experience... even if - in reality - the food at M&S can't possibly compete.

It seems completely impossible, but just when you think M&S couldn't improve on their food ads they take them to a whole new level. This stunning film for their Christmas range is in a league of its own - so inventive, so colourful, and so accomplished that it can't really be compared to anything else.

Bubbling, fiery and richly coloured, the ingredients in this autumnal spot for M&S are evocative of all that's good about the season. Slatherings of passata - fire engine red - add vibrancy to the comforting qualities of pizza dough; and crushed peppercorns in salami slices add piquancy on top. You can almost smell the wood burning to melt that pristine mozzarella which brings each separate flavour into tiny taste bombs of deliciousness. Yum.

When autumn inevitably turns ugly, one could do worse than turn to M&S's vision of the leafy season for respite. Another meticulously-crafted work of grocery delight sees an eclectic array of dishes prepared in a way that ensnares the senses with gusto. The colour arrangements are lovely too - all warm colours to be found gracing our trees in the coming weeks.

You can imagine various foodstuffs sitting on the shelf wishing that one day they'll receive the M&S treatment. These ads do a sublime job of making ingredients look their very best and that honour now goes to spices. Chillies turn to powder in the blink of an eye, ginger is chopped with precision, and mounds of ground coriander fall in preparation for a Moroccan dish.

A night in with an M&S meal deal never sounds like a bad idea, and the sight of this juicy steak, choice dessert and rich red wine combo only strengthens our convictions. If this is just for an average Saturday evening - and the £10 price tag suggests it is - just think what M&S can offer when we want to push the boat out, it implies.

This is starting to get embarrassing. M&S's food campaign is so unremittingly excellent that we're running out of superlatives with which to describe the ads that arrive in speedy succession on our screens and which - every time - look as fresh as a daisy. Or a just-caught crab. Or crisply coated fillet. Or perfectly topped ice cream cone. You get our drift.

"Sizzle"

As you'd expect, these aren't just any old barbecue ideas - they're M&S barbecue ideas. Tiny, fat sausages sizzle on the griddle lit by a row of elegant black matches, while sauces and marinades lovingly envelop the foods to which they lend their flavour. Veggie kebabs aren't relegated to a back burner either, with three skewers in varying hues providing the perfect accompanying crunch.
