Pan-Euro Chocolate

This ad for Milka chocolate has a touch of the Hunger Games about it, as children compete to gather the most Easter eggs by any means necessary (including one particularly creative girl who attacks her rival with bees). Disaster strikes when a chocolate bunny falls out of reach, and the youngsters work together to find a whimsical solution - with some unexpected help from a spiky friend.

"What Are Girls Made Of?"

“Oh, what, oh what, oh what are our girls made of?” sings the precocious star of Nike’s latest film marking International Women’s Day. Flowers, rings, gossip, and, erm, marmalade make them in Russia, apparently. This earns the audience’s approval… but she’s ready to sing from a different hymn sheet with a little help from unexpected quarters.

This film is one of three Nike spots commissioned for International Women's Day, each focused on a different part of the world. Here we take a look at Turkey and the stereotypes Turkish women come up against in their day-to-day lives. Beyoncé's feminist anthem 'Run The World' is an appropriate choice of soundtrack to accompany the powerful visuals - it certainly gets the blood pumping.

Nike leap aboard the International Women's Day bandwagon with typical sure-footedness with this film focusing on female athletes in the Middle East. It's one of three made specially to mark the event and - for our money - the most significant as, unlike the other two, it was directed by a woman. It is, nonetheless, very typical of the Nike oeuvre.

"The Time Machine"

11 Nov 2016
Milka's Christmas commercial goes for whimsical with a capital W. This intrepid inventor tries to bring the big day forward with a homemade time machine, paying homage to the 1960 film of the same name. While he takes his contraption for a test drive, his family complete the illusion with some rapid-fire decorating. Perfectly amiable Christmas fare, though what are they going to do for the rest of December?

When all's said and done, planet Earth's got a lot going for it, eh? This globe-spanning film from airline S7 and director AG Rojas reminds us that Earth's multi-layered beauty is there waiting for us to enjoy. The advertised airline wants us to embrace the world we know best - and does an impressive job of appealing to our inner explorer.

This technical sophistication of the current generation of games consoles means the beautiful game has rarely looked more convincing. EA Sports' FIFA series consistently wins plaudits for its near-broadcast standard presentation, and the roar from the crowd is captured in all its glory in this immersive ad for FIFA 17. The camera follows a Manchester United starlet from the dressing room to the pitch.

Is it a promo? Is it a commercial? Is it branded content? Who cares? Whatever it is, it's an absolute triumph that's absolutely pumping with energy. The track was created by Tiësto and Jauz - DJ/Producers from Holland and Los Angeles respectively and it's a perfect piece of music to promote Inbev's sponsorship of the Tomorrowland Festival. The annual event takes place in the Belgian town of Boom - no, seriously! - which sits between Antwerp and Brussels.

DAVID doesn't know who provided the voiceover for this commercial but he knows it isn't Peter Serafinowicz... and that is a matter of some regret. Serafinowicz brought his customary archness to the original work for this campaign and - as we noted at the time - elevated the visual material into a lovely zone of self-parody.

This interesting commercial examining Greece's preparations for the Olympics acknowledges that the European country is up against it, and presses Nike's famous exhortation 'just do it' as a plan of action. Problematically though, it tacitly admits Nike - as a headline sponsor - has failed to ensure the promised legacy is delivered and this massively damages the communication of this message.

Paris Saint-Germain and France midfielder Blaise Matuidi is the star of Nike's energetic tribute to the moments that trigger a lifelong passion for football. For Matuidi, it was watching Jay-Jay Okocha (the man famously described as "so good, they named him twice") on the television screen. He may get put in his place early on, but years of distance running finally earns him a berth at the heart of Les Bleus' midfield.

Another sugary sweet offering from Milka brings us to the fictional town of Lilaberg as a girl searches for the perfect biscuit jar. À la 'Toy Story', the receptacles on sale in this old-timey shop subtly try to attract her attention. She only has eyes for one, though - and we learn why when she shares an afternoon bickie with her grandfather.

Personal taste will determine whether this new ad for Milka indulges the sweet tooth or erodes it. Nonetheless, there is some lovely production design present in this tale of a little boy travelling to see his favourite circus act in the flesh. While the young 'un isn't quite as powerful as Gustavus, the strongman makes him believe otherwise with the help of a chocolate bar.

Booking.com kicks off a new campaign proclaiming that holidays can be the perfect time to indulge our most beloved pursuits. A gravelly VO lends an aura of seduction to the proposition while a couple are shown going medieval on each other, as it were. A neat reminder as to the variety of activities that can shape our time away, and that the advertised website can help get us closer to them.

2016 receives the movie trailer it deserves in this super ad for Booking.com. As the sequel to 2015, there's a lot of pressure on this year to deliver. Goodness this is long. At nearly 24 minutes, it's actually longer than a non-BBC sitcom and - although it provides plenty of laughs - it's actually hard to imagine anyone watching the whole thing. In fact, DAVID hesitates to admit a lack of professionalism, but can anyone let us know if anything interesting happens in the last ten minutes!

This fun ad has Sergio Agüero and Lionel Messi enjoying a brief winter break playing FIFA 16 at Santa's gaff. Despite the two showing they have just as much skill on the console as in real life, the reindeer aren't impressed. Despite Dasher's brio, the Xbox One controller is much more suited to human hands than for hooves. Best stick to the sleigh-pulling, chaps.

Daniel Craig plays second fiddle to a young woman on a pair of waterskis in W+K Amsterdam's Heineken swansong, and it's a fantastic way to bow out. Craig makes good his escape from a gang of villains in a Mediterranean fishing village by jumping into a motor boat but doesn't realised it was being prepared for a jaunty bit of water sports.

To worship at the altar of football is a familiar idea, but in launching the latest iteration of their long-running FIFA franchise, EA Sports aims to elevate the beautiful game into the realm of opera, high art, and the cultural elite. The end result may not please Classic FM, but it's good fun nonetheless.

Reminiscent of a terrific lastminute.com film from earlier this summer, a breathless piece of work from W+K (Amsterdam) has Booking.com providing the same joie de vivre when it comes to holidays. Lionel Messi has tasted both victory and defeat during his astonishing football career and this surreal commercial for the latest edition of the FIFA video game suggested his tears can be distilled into a delicious confectionery based on the sweetness of winning and the bitterness of losing. The 'commentary' errs on the side of obviousness but otherwise this is a well-worked piece.

The perky protagonist of this engaging jaunt seeks to raise the nation from their telecommunications slumber and trumpet the benefits of Tesco Mobile's services.
