USA Mobile Phones

Ever look at your watch and wish you could add just one more minute - heck, even a second - on? After all, it's all you would need to complete the day's to-do list... but what if said to-do list was on your phone and the battery's dead? Time to panic? Not so with the Samsung Galaxy S7 as demonstrated in this energetic commercial directed by Rogue's Stacy Wall.

The narrator informs us that time has always been a pressing issue - even the dinosaurs had their schedules wrecked by a pesky asteroid. Back in modern times, alarm clocks, the ageing process, and watching TV commercials (ooh, meta) all gobble up our sand in the hourglass. The ad even advises us to plunder our film collection and see how many films lean on time to drive the plot - just ask Danny Glover and he'll point to Lethal Weapon 2's toilet bomb. Here, it's a salsa bomb.

Neatly tapping into the audience's paranoia about ever-decreasing power bars and percentages, the brand communicate how the S7's long-lasting battery and wireless charging widget can allay any fears of time lost thanks to a blank screen.

Even if Glover isn't enthused by his own performance, it's a fun depiction of Samsung's tech nouse thanks to some quickfire editing and Wall's accomplished eye for cinematic visuals.

Verizon
"Backdoor Brag"
30s
24 May 2016
30 Rock returns to our screens, albeit in a compressed format thanks to dodgy network coverage. Fans of the US comedy series will instantly recognise this exchange between returning stars Jane Krakowski (Jenna) and Jack McBrayer (Kenneth) as they discuss the art of 'backdoor bragging'. Alas, the set becomes far less roomy thanks to a stingy data plan. Verizon, on the other hand, aim to provide optimum telly binging.

"Bad Streaming"

24 May 2016
Hang fire on giving your network provider both barrels - this Verizon ad starring cast members of 30 Rock is deliberately made to look like a buffering mess. Jenna and Kenneth's conversation is rudely interrupted by some ugly glitches, while Frank (Judah Friedlander) seems pretty chilled about his trippy streaming state - an attitude which won't be shared by customers looking for the kind of stable connection Verizon claim to provide.

Launched during Sunday's Academy Awards broadcast, this amusing ad for the Samsung Galaxy S7 is suitably heavy on the star power while also letting its quirky supporting cast shine. This eclectic bunch has a lot of queries about the current state of mobile technology, enough to push even the most enthusiastic sales assistant to the brink.

Coca Cola
"Hulk v Ant Man"

It's safe to say we haven't exactly been bowled over by Coca Cola's new ad campaign. However, the soft drink giants have done what anyone in trouble would do - they've called in the Avengers. It's larger than life versus smaller than life as Bruce Banner's Hulk takes signature umbrage at Scott Lang's Ant-Man nicking his mini can of Coke. Looks like Dr Banner will also be chasing a refund for that anger management book.

As well as elevating sport into the realm of the epic, Nike also has a knack of boiling sport down to that of childish glee. What better way to achieve the latter than by having a group of elite athletes wake up to every child's dream - a snow day. The New England Patriots's Rob Gronowski is first out on the street, but he's quickly joined by the Miami Dolphins's Ndamukong Suh.

Nike has a knack for speaking to athletes of all abilities and this tribute to the marathon runner argues that leading the field is one thing, but being part of the field can be a victory in itself. We never see the finish line as the camera instead travels back along the marathon route. It's an unfamiliar sight for a sports ad seeing the cleanup operation underway, but the race is still going for a determined few.

"And So It Begins"

War is coming… and it smells like Old Spice. The brand decide to pit two of their most recognisable spokesmen against each other as they promote their favourite fragrances. There’s Isaiah Mustafa’s unflappable smoothie who manages to conjure scenarios out of nowhere for the pleasure of the female audience, and then there’s Terry Crews's loud, fearless leaps into the absurd and ridiculous.

The concept of a timeout doesn't apply in this exhilarating ad for Nike. A skate down the street leads one athletic kid to become the extra man for one team sport after another. In a flash, he's kitted up and ready to go. Having grown used to Nike and other brands focusing their attention on the big guns of basketball and both kinds of football, it's refreshing to see sports like volleyball and lacrosse receive their frenetic moment in the spotlight too.

Normally, a 30" blast of Terry Crews's brilliantly demented bathroom routine would bring more than enough enjoyment. This time, Old Spice have an extra treat in store. Clicking on the YouTube link takes viewers to a special website featuring Crews in a permanent strongman pose, giving one ample time to 'explore' his ripped physique.

"The Colonel Returns"

Colonel Sanders marks his return by describing how much the world has changed since he's been away. He may not be enamoured with cargo pants (we suggest the Colonel doesn't walk into a branch of Gap any time soon), but he's just as passionate about chicken as ever. There's something a little off about the live-action Colonel, but it's a warm performance.

This excellent ad from Nike taps into the idea that sometimes overcoming the voice in your head is the first obstacle when it comes to exercise. Anxiety about what everyone else is doing, whether you can step up to the plate, whether it's all worth the effort... the insights into each person's mindset in this ad provide both empathy and likeability.

Chrysler
"The Kings & Queens of America"

14 Apr 2015
This ad for Chrysler tells us that America keeps nothing aside for people - only through their own endeavour and initiative can they succeed. Various individuals experience an awakening of resolve as they stride steely-eyed to their respective goals. Featuring a VO from Game of Thrones's Peter Dinklage and evocative photography, this is a confident car ad with an extra layer of polish.

Much has been made of Tiger Woods's fall from grace in recent years. Triumphs in the majors elude him, his form a source of morbid curiosity...even the video game series that bears his name has replaced him. However, Nike has no interest in denigrating the legacy of a man who was the face of golf for so many years. Instead, they've picked a graceful method of showing his brilliance inspiring a young Rory McIlroy.

This daft ad for Old Spice plays on the parental stereotypes of mothers who can't cut the apron strings and fathers who are all too happy to let the fruit of their loins strike out into the great wide world. Unknown to the young men out on romantic dates, their mothers are with them in spirit; clutching favourite of toys from childhood and lurking crazily under the ice of skating rinks.

Who says 15 seconds isn't enough to deliver a fully-evolved, stand-alone concept? Hard for anyone to make that claim after seeing this. A handsome dude and his lady are at the funfair when suddenly, his hair - a wig! - falls off his head. Well, not so much falls as slithers, because it takes on a life of its own and begins to operate the 'grabber' slot machine with joyous results. Inspired.

In truth, Old Spice are never going to better The Man Your Man Could Smell Like but this gives it a run for its money. Like the new P & G film , it focuses on mums but there the similarity ends... and then some. In this commercial, mums are struggling to let go of their maturing sons and they stalk their young fledglings as if obsessed by their burgeoning independence.

This is a companion piece to the film that ran ahead of the London Olympics. Like its predecessor, it focuses on the role played by mothers in the early years of supporting a medal-winning competitor and depicts a fitting reward for years of dedication. It's all done in a shamelessly emotional fashion... and it works.

Eminem's appearance in this ad was probably the most remarkable advertising moment during this year's Superbowl. It's a fantastic piece of work boldly declaring Detroit's intention to fight back from rock-bottom and produce cars Americans want to buy.
