Quaker Oats

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day - especially when youíre planning to blast off into space later. Who better to argue this point than Buzz Aldrin? This evocative film from Quaker Oats takes us back to the golden age of space travel, with eighty-six-year-old Aldrin musing on the past, the present, and the future.

Aldrin relates how Apollo 11 made its way to the moon with the whole of planet Earth tuning in to track its progress. Itís a story we've heard before but HLAís Tom Merilion captures some particularly poignant reminiscences from a man softened by the great age he's now reached.

Meanwhile, archive footage reminds us of the excitement associated with this journey into the unknown.

To keep their astronauts up to date with events back on terra firma, NASA turned to an unlikely news source: the World Porridge Eating Championship held in Corby, England. And now this long-forgotten transmission has been cleverly used to associate oats with one of mankindís greatest achievements.

For Aldrin, itís just one example of humanityís infinite curiosity. He encourages us to keep striving forwards. Agency AMV and director Merilion wisely show due reverence to their real-life starman by keeping him centre-stage, and the connection is all the stronger for it.

Quaker Oats
"Super Goodness"
20s
22 Sep 2016
Porridge puritans may take umbrage, but Quaker Oats are adding some exotic ingredients to the mix. This ad focuses on their new blueberry, cranberry, and guava variant, complete with slow-motion shots of each ingredient to emphasise their wholesome properties. Looks like a decent bet for those looking to get stuck into their five-a-day as early as possible.

Walkers Bugles
"Claws"
20s
4 Jul 2016
Young Gary Lineker must not have taken that "don't play with your food" discussion to heart judging by this ad for Walkers Bugles. Unfortunately, his play time is rudely interrupted by a lift full of hungry office workers eager to get their mitts on his packet. Stringing him up with ties and belts seems like a rough ride, but Mr Lineker has proven himself to be a glutton for punishment over the years.

Walkers Crispy Crackers
"Collider"
30s
19 Mar 2016
There was a time when we couldn't get enough of the Large Hadron Collider out CERN way. Now we know Walkers have moved in after all that Higgs boson hubbub. They've taken over the controls in a bid to fuse crisps and crackers together, and it results in a flavoursome breakthrough. However, the team didn't factor in a Gary Lineker-shaped anomaly.

Walkers Tear 'n' Share
"Defence"
20s
22 Feb 2016
Gary Lineker makes use of his loaded contacts list by inviting Alan Hansen and Jamie Redknapp round his gaff to watch the football. Gary being Gary, he isn't keen on the latter part of the Walkers Tear 'n' Share packet; Alan being Alan, however, is quick to notice a defensive frailty and sends his ex-Match of the Day colleague on a trip from recliner to ceiling. Basic errors, Gary - just basic errors.

Walkers
"Lionel Messi's Table Football"
30s
1 Feb 2016
Gary Lineker has found it tricky to keep hold of his bag of Walkers in recent ads, but never before has he lost out to a more illustrious figure. Lionel Messi proves to be just as adept at table football as he is at the real thing by introducing ball to trophy to poor Gary's head. Good fun, plus we can imagine Cristiano Ronaldo sitting at home insisting he could've made a better shot.

Sainsbury's
"Mog's Christmas Calamity"
3 mins 20s
12 Nov 2015
Sainsbury's Christmas commercial always comes later than the others because of the supermarket's respectful decision to defer their seasonal marketing until after Armistice Day. And for the third year running, it's been worth the wait... John Lewis's offering continues to attract the most attention but Sainsbury's is running them a close second these days and this spectacular commercial featuring Judith Kerr's much-loved Mog the Cat edges them ever closer.

Galaxy Duet
"Moon River"
20s
14 Sep 2015
Having used 'Moon River' to dreamy effect in their Audrey Hepburn spot, Galaxy presents a pleasing reworking of the track in aid of their new Duet bar. Chanelle McGuinness and Bxnjamin may dabble in different genres, but together they come up with something just as tuneful. The star power may be gone, but this ad maintains the smoothness well.

Sainsbury's
"Quesadillas"
30s
13 Jul 2015
The costume-hopping scamp from the ad reviewed recently proves to be a fussy eater, no matter what guise he's in. His resourceful mum has a culinary trick up her sleeve however thanks to Sainsbury's online recipe hub. Seems tigers are always partial to (all together now) quesadillas! Lovely performances with a cute gag to finish.

Sainsbury's
"Christmas is for Sharing"
3 mins 20s
12 Nov 2014
There has long been a rumour that Sainsbury's Christmas commercial was going to be a bit special... and when it was shown for the first time - halfway through Coronation Street last night - it didn't disappoint. The supermarket backed AMV to the hilt and they, in turn, provided director Ringan Ledwidge with the canvas and the tools to create a masterpiece and he has rewarded their faith with a truly stupendous piece of work.

Sainsbury's
"Nectar Sorts Summer"
20s
31 Jul 2014
Another outing for the footage of kids enjoying themselves on behalf of Sainsbury's as we're reminded that summer holiday activities can be paid for using Nectar points accrued at Orange Supermarket's tills. Once again, a punk rock soundtrack reminds older viewers of the hottest summer in living memory - the summer of '76.

Sainsbury's
"Pitta Pizzas"
30s
23 Jul 2014
Another simple and effective ad from Orange Supermarket in which quick and wholesome meals for children are made. This time, it's a mum looking after her own and her sister's children, and she gets them involved in making their own pitta pizza toppings. The whole spot has a nice naturalism about it, and it's good to see youngsters enjoying their creations so unreservedly.

Sainsbury's
"Summer Snacks"
30s
6 Jul 2014
A very clever ad indeed. An engagingly sweet dad shows us how he makes healthy snacks for his lads and their friends while we glimpse the boys playing in the garden in the background. Cinnamon apple crisps, frozen strawberry yogurt buttons... they're impressively simple to make, and sound very tasty - plus dad's little fluff in his explanation is a lovely touch: props to all for deciding to leave that in.

Sainsbury's
"Active Kids"
40s
29 Jan 2014
In this charming commercial promoting Sainsbury's Active Kids programme, we're introduced to Gary - a schoolboy very proud of what's he's made in home economics class. When his father asks if he made it by himself, he reveals that he had a little help and we get to see that it his kitchen assistants were David Beckham and Ellie Simmonds. We suspect that the beautifully captured look of adulation on the young actor's face was completely genuine.

Sainsbury's
"The Whole Works"
20s
11 Dec 2013
With its fleeting close-ups of various dishes billowing with steam, the glinting moistness of hot, seasoned veg and the glimpse of sauces, this impressionistic spot works well. Although we were baffled at first to hear the cook tell us they like to have horse - surely we've all put that ugliness behind us now? But it transpires she's saying "the whole works" - obvious really, yet a relief nonetheless.

Sainsbury's
"Turkey"
30s
8 Dec 2013
A young woman tells us in VO that "he's a messy cook, but a good cook" - but who is he? Apparently it's the only time of year he gets stuck into the kitchen... however, we don't know if it's her dad, or maybe her eccentric uncle who lives alone and only gets to see other people when he decides to pop a turkey in the oven. Nice-looking turkey, mind.

If catering for friends and relatives over the festive season doesn't stress you out enough, why not invite the neighbours round for nibbles on Christmas Eve? You might even learn their names, discover who stole your recycling bin, and bond over the annoying pothole that recurs every time there's a hard frost. Plus you can give them some yummy finger food from Sainsbury's and look like you're a more competent and generous host than any of them. Result.

Sainsbury's
"Christmas in a Day"
40s
1 Dec 2013
This spot captures to perfection the way Christmas can disinhibit us all. Half a glass of sherry and nana's doing Gangnam Style, grandad's dusting off his tap skills, and everyone's having a laugh. What's so clever is that this gives you a rush of warmth as if everyone you see here is a member of your extended family - it feels as if for a brief time at least, we're all the same and all together.

Sainsbury's
"Game On"
20s
23 Nov 2013
Ah, family rituals. In this inner circle, it's all about seeing who'll crack first and get stuck into the treats of an evening at Christmas. Dad goes and fetches some bombs from the fridge (chocolate ones, we hasten to add) and the primitive impulse to start raiding as well kicks in without a single nod to calorie counting.

Sainsbury's
"Flaming Pud"
20s
20 Nov 2013
An old chap reminisces about the first time he saw a Christmas pudding being set alight when he was in the Navy and how this became a family tradition whenever he went home. As he tells us this, we're being shown a Taste the Difference pud, discreetly priced, being lit. A tasteful addition to a winning campaign.

Sainsbury's
"Christmas Moments"
3 mins 30s
13 Nov 2013
Sainsbury's has created a spot that fills an entire ad break, without mentioning the brand at all until the end. This is, in fact, not just an ad but a trailer for a film directed by Kevin Macdonald which will be available on YouTube at the end of November. After a similar ad yesterday, are we witnessing a new trend?

Sainsbury's
"Fish Finger Sandwiches"
30s
23 Sep 2013
Orange Supermarket demonstrates that you can make the humble fish finger appear relatively sophisticated with a bit of artful positioning on freshly-sliced bread and a drizzle of their tartare sauce in this - ahem - tastefully shot spot.

Sainsbury's
"Pizza and Salad"
30s
5 Sep 2013
This lovely ad reflects Sainsbury's current confidence. The food on display looks fresh and healthy and - although price plays a part in the communication - it's secondary to the main message. It's a great way for Sainsbury's to press home their advantage and make it clear to shoppers disillusioned with other brands that there's a better alternative within their orange-liveried stores.

Sainsbury's
"Bacon, Spinach and Pine Nuts"
30s
8 Sep 2013
Lovely, low-key spot showing how effortlessly a salad can be prepared using good-quality - yet perfectly affordable - ingredients. We very much like the way it isn't making a shouty song and dance: the style of filming is intimate yet detached; a glimpse of someone else's world who isn't aware the camera's rolling.

Sainsbury's
"Boredom"
30s
7 Jul 2013
Sainsbury's book of boredom-busting ideas better live up to its name because the ad suggests it's going to be a godsend to parents over the long summer weeks. We all know that feeling when the children are kicking around aimlessly with a sullenness that's ready to tip over into anarchy at any given moment, and this turns that negative energy on its head and makes it a thing of positive joy.
