Thinkbox
"The Broadcast"
60s
22 December 2016
UK TV Ad Promotion

This pleasingly cryptic piece of communication from Thinkbox reminds us how television advertising can enable anyone to punch above their weight. In this case, an alien with intentions unknown begins broadcasting on all frequencies to the people of planet Earth prompting waves of panic as the population awaits its fate.

Into the breach strides a man who has been waiting for this moment all of his life, racing off in his van to make sure he's at the centre of events when the aliens make their presence felt.

The film breaks on Boxing Day and will be heralded by a number of 'interruptions' appearing in other commercials ahead of the launch of the 60" film.

It requires viewers to join the dots to connect this to Thinkbox's mission and while this may mean it passes over the heads of many watching, those who matter - potential customers for the advertising industry - seem likely to decipher its cryptic message and, as DAVID has said before, there's nothing wrong with a little bit of 'huh?' when it comes to frequently-repeated communication.

Kerrygold
"Wetter Weather"
30s
1 Nov 2016
There's a lovely trend in Irish advertising to take a self-deprecating approach to all things related to the Emerald Isle, and the weather is no exception in this charming ad for Kerrygold butter. A chap cycles happily through the rainy countryside, past people who certainly don't seem to have been put off by the weather as they picnic, read the paper, and even get married in the pouring rain.

Arla Protein
"Outdoor Planking"
30s
17 Oct 2016
This entertaining ad for Arla Protein features a right planker. Eager to strengthen his core, this chap enrols in an outdoor boot camp. As if working his abs wasn't hard enough, a dog gets extra friendly with the side of his face. Only the strongest can endure such conditions, according to the steely VO - and Arla's protein range can help such fitness nuts stay in the zone.

Channel 4 Paralympics Coverage
"We're the Superhumans"
2 mins 53s
14 Jul 2016
While Rio's main event is bogged down by fears about the Zika virus and by the banning (or otherwise) of athletes from Russia and Kenya because of systematic cheating, the Paralympics is left to hold aloft the torch of Olympic ideals all by itself. The scale and importance of these Games has lifted it from a cultural after-thought to a series of events so much more in keeping with the Olympian ideal that there may come a time when it completely eclipses its able-bodied equivalent.

Harvey Nichols
"Gift Face"
60s
10 Nov 2015
Harvey Nix have established themselves as the cynical face of Christmas advertising over the last few years and it's served them well but this isn't their greatest effort. It doesn't help that Curry PC World's campaign with Jeff Goldblum mines the same seam much more successfully. Still, it's a very decent effort and keeps the meme rolling.

Sony PlayStation
"The Wonderful Life of the PS4 Player"
60s
6 Nov 2015
Sony PlayStation provide undeniable proof that gamers are in fact the most agile, fleet-footed specimens on the planet. Well... that might be pushing it, but this kinetic ad pays equally energetic tribute to the console's fanbase while giving the gamer stereotype a jolt. Out of bed and full of gravity-defying beans, this PS4 owner demonstrates the possibilities of the machine by navigating his next-gen abode.

John Lewis
"Tiny Dancer"
90s
21 Aug 2015
In a performance worthy of Abigail Breslin in Little Miss Sunshine, a young girl dances her heart out around the house. In her mind important folk from the Royal Ballet are secretly watching and whispering: "Who is this gifted creature? We must have her for our very own." In reality, she's merely fortunate to have parents with home insurance that indemnifies the resultsof her more enthusiastic moves.

Arla Skyr
"The Messenger"
90s
20 Apr 2015
This charming commercial for an Icelandic yoghurt launching in the UK, tells the unlikely tale of a young messenger who was so efficient that his home town only required one telephone. Like his young protagonist, director Dougal Wilson delivers again and again and the period detail and lightness of touch on display here proves he truly is the master of his domain.

John Lewis
"Monty the Penguin"

6 Nov 2014
A remarkable aspect of the John Lewis Christmas phenomenon is the way adam&eveDDB take the annual anticipation in their stride and make it work totally to the advantage of the brand. Fulfilling expectations after success is so difficult we even have a name for it - that "difficult second album syndrome" - but this Christmas institution is already onto its sixth album and there's no sense of any difficulty in maintaining the quality. Indeed, this year's may be the best yet.

John Lewis
"150 Years"
90s
4 May 2014
It's a sign of their well-earned confidence that with every ad, John Lewis seems to move further and further away from showing any hint of product. In this 90 second spot celebrating 150 years of "never standing still", we see a selection of vignettes showing memorable moments that typical customers have experienced throughout that time.

Fujitsu
"Together We Can Make That Happen"
1 min 50s
11 Apr 2014
This is a clever way of illustrating the idea that Fujitsu are part of the fabric of your life even if - at a minute and fifty seconds - it's a bit on the long side. You sometimes get the impression that companies like this feel they don't get as much recognition as they deserve and their advertising is all about self-esteem. Bless 'em.

Wilko
"Keeping Up with the Rogers"
60s
11 Apr 2014
The idea that pirates might be competitive about the fixtures and fittings of their vessels provides scope for a lot of fun and games in this amusing ad for Wilko that marks the retailer's TV debut. DAVID can't recall ever having seen a branch before which means they could probably do with a boost to their profile and this impressive ad is a great way to go about it.

"Christmas Pony"
60s
29 Nov 2013
Our little pony gets festive via a bit of VFX magic as Christmas approaches; moonwalking through icing-sugar snow flurries as his fellow animals watch him. A horse wearing fake antlers gazes gravely over a dry stone wall - before the farmer comes along on his tractor bedecked with fairy lights. As the ad suggests: goodnatured, fun, and full of seasonal silliness.

Asus
"Perpetual Motion"
1 min 47s
3 Dec 2013
Good lord... these devices are getting more powerful by the day. Not only is this one a nice little laptop, pull it apart and it sends you off on a surreal voyage of adventure that a shedload of class A drugs are going to struggle to compete with. Just make sure you've had a few trial runs before you take it with you to that new job or you may have some explaining to do when they find you gibbering in the stationery cupboard.

St John Ambulance
"Save the Boy"
60s
16 Sep 2013
An astonishingly powerful ad from the charity, reminding us that it's crucial to know first aid. The deceptively gentle start, cocooned in the outdoor sounds of a late summer afternoon, is suddenly and traumatically disrupted. Beautiful sequencing follows - giving you hope before a powerful paradigm shift occurs.

John Lewis
"Things Matter"
90s
18 Aug 2013
Dougal Wilson has worked his usual magic in the latest commercial for John Lewis. When an ad campaign is brimming with confidence, every execution swaggers into our commercial breaks with an aura which ensures we all look up and pay attention, and no current advertiser has more confidence than John Lewis.

Mobil1
"Get Personal"
70s
18 Apr 2013
An ordinary bloke makes his weary, bleary way home from work to be met by FI mechanics who rush out to tinker with his unremarkable car the moment he parks up. This sweet and lovely ad is promoting the chance to obtain VIP tickets to mingle with various F1 stars, and a very winning formula it is too.

"Rock Ballad Pony"
30s
15 Mar 2013
A rather Bonnie pony will raise a smile among the age group who remembers the days of power ballads replete with soft-focus music videos. There are so many ways to show equines getting into the groove that we imagine the main difficulty will be knowing which to choose, let alone when to stop.

Three
"Bollywood Pony"
30s
15 Mar 2013
Three's campaign has already proved it's got legs (four of 'em!), and will no doubt run for quite some time before exhausting itself. In this spot the ponies provide a little Bollywood glamour. Henna-decorated and beturbanned, the handsome stud and his love sing of passion while chorus ponies nod their heads in the background.

Three
"Red Nose Pony"
30s
15 Mar 2013
Three's moonwalking pony does its bit for Comic Relief by sporting one of the charity's big red noses in this special ad urging punters to donate. Like many of the Olympics-related ads that ran in August, it arguably reminds viewers to switch channels... which is not that helpful in a climate where every viewer counts.

Three
"Punk Pony"
30s
15 Mar 2013
At last, a punk pony... it's what this campaign has been longing for. To the sound of Teenage Kicks by The Undertones, a pony sporting an impressive Mohican haircut is enhanced by all manner of hand-drawn animation. Three have had a lot of fun with this campaign but the original ad could have had more airtime... and these a little less.

"Funk Pony"
30s
15 Mar 2013
Another of the wonderfully daft follow-ups to Dougal Wilson's moonwalking pony commercial for the mobile phone network introduces us to a roller-skating disco pony with a glitterball head. This one was shared by someone who identifies herself as '@second_time_mum' who looks like a suspiciously marketing-savvy type of individual when you read her feed.

"Rock Pony"

Crowdsurfing, magisterial guitar-playing, top-hat wearing pony performs The Final Countdown to rockin' four-legged fans in a windswept Shetland landscape. It's silly, surreal, and along with its other stablemates is bound to help make Three Mobile the network provider of choice.

"K-Dubz"

Our multi-talented ponies go all clip-hop on us in this latest outing. Oodles of bling, lashings of Chateau Shetland and a diamante Hollywood-style sign all signal the love and fun with which this campaign has been put together. DAVID especially likes the studio booth with it's 'Neigh sayer' headline.

"Boyband Ponies"
30s
8 Mar 2013
Wow, it's just like a real boyband... only less manufactured. The latest addition to the growing, ahem, stable of ads derived from the moonwalking pony spot which aired earlier this month features footage of a well-groomed equine group working with the kind of synchronisation that can be achieved with basic special effects.
