UK After Shave

Come one, come all, the 'secrets' of after-shave production are finally revealed! Well, Bruno Banani's at least. We're given an entertaining glimpse at how their ingredients are crushed, filtered, and mixed in ever-so modish lab conditions before being poured into equally precise bottles. A sleek and clever piece with a levity often absent in this sector.

That is so much better. I'm actually going to get a copy.

Audi R8
"The Eye"
60s
2 Nov 2015
The term "eye-catching" can risk losing all meaning after a while, but this ad for the Audi R8 justifies the label. A pupil dilates and contracts with each thunderous rev of the vehicle's engine, while well-timed transitions briefly provide us with the reason for this optical spectacle. A clever conceit brought to life with unsurprisingly engaging visuals and precision sound.

Allianz
"Get To The Game"
10s
16 Sep 2015
Off the back of their fine campaign opener, Allianz present another easy-going ad designed to convey their appreciation of their customers' everyday needs. The driver in this rugby-flavoured execution has fallen victim to a broken down car, but he's still able to drive himself and his mates to the match thanks to Allianz's courtesy car promise.

Allianz
"Repairs At Work"
10s
14 Sep 2015
It may only be ten seconds long, but this spot for Allianz gets right to the point - if your car needs bodywork repairs, you can plan to have them done while you're at work. Obviously that's just the topline message, but it's simple and direct enough to make you want to know more so it serves its purpose very well.

Allianz
"Together We Will Stand"
30s
14 Sep 2015
A rather lovely ad for Allianz features an array of car journeys and conversational snippets that all ring true. Its low-key, vérité vibe hits the spot perfectly - the sheepish admission that a cheesy CD stuffed in the glove compartment is ours; the sniping of siblings in the back; the dog riding shotgun in the passenger seat.

Finish
"Who Cleans The Cleaner?"
30s
11 Aug 2015
Finish are evidently determined to defy the law of diminishing returns. After their splendid reinvigoration of the sector earlier this year, W+K have crafted another execution alive with the joy of cleaning. With stylish ingenuity, directing duo RBG6 chart a year's worth of dirty bowls, plates, and cutlery from the perspective of the dishwasher.

Honda
"New Civic"
10s
4 Mar 2015
This short spot for the new Honda Civic follows the style of the excellent longer spot for Honda generally, which riffs on the philosophy of always aiming to improve. It manages to fit in the message about five years' free servicing without the aid of a babbling VO, and suggests the advertised car is rammed with attitude. Way to go.

Honda
"Keep Up"
40s
16 Feb 2015
This terrific spot for Honda only features cars in the last few seconds. For the most part, it's a fixed backdrop which looks like the Utah Salt Flats. On this empty and arid stage appear supers, centre screen, addressing us directly. What happens if we move out of our comfort zone? If we REALLY push ourselves? To improve and improve and get to be better, faster?

Argos
"Advent Calendar"
60s
8 Nov 2014
Yes, yes; we know we gave five stars to the first ad in this campaign a five - but this, if anything, is even better. Inventive, quirky (dancing arms in a box!) and constantly surprising, it doesn't just put a fresh gloss on the retailer, it gives it a whole new image. Far from the cosy, somewhat staid and slightly downmarket feel it's had since it arrived on our high streets several decades ago, this suggests Argos is bursting at the seams with intelligent inspiration.

Argos
"Wind Tunnel"
40s
2 Nov 2014
Once we'd got over the novelty of the first new Argos ad, we wondered quite how subsequent ads would differ significantly from one another. We should have known better and guessed that there would be equally imaginative alternatives. A vertical wind tunnel features in this, with synchronised skydivers providing a visual metaphor for Argos's Instant Pick-Up service. Stylish.

Argos
"Ode to Joy"
30s
21 Oct 2014
A pyroclastic flow of colourful toys erupts in a sterile, all-white bedroom, defying gravity as Ode to Joy rings out. Dolls, Lego bricks and crayons hurtle through the air with slow-motion grace and a large yet elegant super informs us there's up to a third off Barbie, Hot Wheels and Monster High, whatever that is. A visually impressive homage to the annual onset of Christmas Fever.

The Sunday Times
"Incredible Edibles"
30s
14 Nov 2013
Slow-motion imagery is used to illustrate the idea that a lot of the recipes put forward for a special supplement were rejected before the final decision was made about which to include. This device allows for a genuinely eye-catching sequence that will have many an amateur chef glancing up from their second screen to check out the action.

Diet Coke
"Shoe Modification"
10s
7 Sep 2011
One of the Diet Coke string puppets finds a pair of shoes that she likes but finds the heels are a little high. But she's a go-getter so she modifies them using a circular saw... if you want to be like her (minus the strings) then you should drink the advertised product.

Ford Focus
"Can a Car?"
60s
28 Mar 2011
Car advertising needs to do this kind of thing more often. A series of genuinely remarkable innovations are described individually in this commercial staking a claim for the Ford Focus as a bastion of pioneering technology. The delivery is dry but this allows the features themselves to shine.

Diet Coke
"Ugly Betty Sponsorship"
60s
24 Jun 2009
This excellent series of bumpers advertising Diet Coke's sponsorship of Ugly Betty features some string puppets demonstrating the self-obsessive hedonism we expect of the kind of fashionistas featured in the programme. The blowtorch gags are best.

Chicago Town
"Number One"
30s
16 Apr 2009
Another nifty piece of low budget work for Chicago Town pizza reveals that it came top in a recent vote in which it was compared with takeaway offerings from Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza. Which makes them top of the Vauxhall Conference of cuisine.

McDonald's
"Mayo Chicken"
20s
20 Jan 2009
More rapid fire graphics in a further bid to persuade us that the new offerings from McDonald's are value for money. Their timing probably isn't bad but does anyone really believe that something that costs 99p is going to be anything more than a gulp?

McCain Home Fries
"Conductor"
60s
1 Jan 2009
A farmer orchestrates the weather to create conditions which are perfect for the potatoes used to make the advertised product. There's shades of 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice' here only without the whole thing going calimitously wrong... obviously.

McDonald's
"Flick Book"
30s
1 Jan 2009
Here's a company that knows how to respond to a credit crunch... just carry on doing what you've always done only do it slightly cheaper. There's nowhere you can eat out for less money than McDonald's... if, indeed, you classify eating at McDonald's as eating out.

McDonald's
"Folds"
20s
5 Sep 2007
A neat, if simple, piece of animation here that works on two levels as it both displays the ingredients that make up the advertised product and suggests the manner in which it is folded together. There may be little to link the various strands of the advertising of McDonald's but the standard is consistent.

Beechams All In One
"Ice Pool"
30s
3 Dec 2005
Another bizarre-looking film depicting strange cures from other cultures assures us that it is quite normal in rural Russia to attempt see off a cold by getting the sufferer to jump into a pool of freezing cold water. The fellow in this ad doesn't look keen though.

Beechams Flu Plus
"Outer Mongolia"
30s
28 Nov 2005
According to this ad for Beechams, n Outer Mongolia, there are still those who believe that sleeping with Yaks will cure a cold. We hope that this entails merely sleeping in the same stable rather than interfering with the animals in any kind of unhealthy way.

Fanta Z
"Spit"
40s
12 May 2005
Ad seems to admit that Fanta Light was a disaster as it shows people literally spitting it out. Apparently, it is to be replaced by Fanta Z which is an alternative sugar-free drink that, Fanta hopes, will not lead people to spit it out. A marketing oddity that stands out because of its distinctive look as well as its strangeness..
