Highways England
"Rain"
60s
2 December 2016
UK Charities

Highways England is urging drivers to slow down in rainy conditions after recent statistics revealed that almost 3,000 people were killed or seriously injured in wet weather accidents last year.

This beautifully-shot ad makes its point gracefully as rain begins to pour inside a strangely empty house, soaking the belongings left behind by children on a busy morning.

The lingering shots of everyday objects tell us something about the family living there - abandoned toys, school achievements on the fridge, and finally photos.

The sounds of an emergency dispatch about a family involved in a serious accident are heard as we finally see the family and it becomes apparent why the house is empty. This is an emotional film which gets its message across without much drama but with a great deal of impact.

Surely this deserves 5 stars? Especially if the Cadburys 'Lights' spot is deemed worth of 5??

Highways England is urging drivers to slow down in rainy conditions after recent statistics revealed that almost 3,000 people were killed or seriously injured in wet weather accidents last year. This beautifully-shot ad makes its point gracefully as rain begins to pour inside a house, soaking the remains of a busy morning that's been mysteriously abandoned.

Road Safety
"Between"
45s
6 Oct 2016
This film for Road safety is bound to have the impact it wants: making cyclists cautious about their decisions when lorries are around. Opening with a skilfully edited montage of clips of things you don't want to get stuck between: rutting stags, hurtling hockey players, a boxer's fist and his opponent's face, the ad sets viewer up so they expect the content to be funny, before letting dread creep in as impacts start to land and things begin to look sinister.

"School Makeover"

Sister knows best as this amiable back to school ad for Sainsbury's demonstrates. While mum makes sure her son looks neat and proper for his first day, his older sister looks on with well-versed bemusement. Knowing her bro needs a little helping of individuality, she gives him a quick makeover at the school gates courtesy of a popped collar and spiky hair.

Guinness
"Alive Inside"
80s
30 Mar 2016
Up-and-coming director Kibwe Tavares helms this electric commercial for Guinness Africa Special with nary a pub nor bar in sight. Instead, the film is a restless celebration of what it means to get that heart-rate pounding - and it's not afraid to get in your face about it.

Dolmio
"The Meeting"
30s
12 Jan 2016
This may be the best Dolmio ad we've ever seen... now, that isn't saying a great deal as we're not huge fans of the puppet-based ads but - by offering a Godfather parody - this does at least have something about it! The familiar 'papa' from the regular ads adopts the role of - well, Don Dolmio we assume - and promises rival families an offer they can't refuse.

Currys PC World
"Twins"

What better way to try and persuade your dad to cough up for a new laptop than to send a little flattery his way? It's the logic favoured by this teenager as he favourably compares his pa's features to those of a chiselled hunk (David Gandy, if our eyes don't deceive us). Lovely understated comedy as the family aren't buying it while the lad maintains his façade of amazement.

"Song"
30s
2 Aug 2015
This will no doubt raise a knowing smile on the faces of parents across the land. After all, haven't all offspring tried heavy-handed manipulation to get something they want? It's as clever as it is funny because the song is just the right side of completely awful - terrific performance from the young actress - and, like its companion ad with Benji the pug, nails a fundamental truth about human behaviour.

Currys PC World
"Dog"
30s
1 Aug 2015
Oh dear - poor Benji the pug. While mum's out, dad is plotting to get a new pc and has decided the dog is just what he needs for success. Concocting a liquid that can pass for pee, he spills a glass liberally over the keyboard of the family laptop and puts Benji on the table beside it. Cue the return of his other half, who is horrified at what she assumes is the mutt's incontinence.

Sainsbury's
"Poppies"

This beautifully-illustrated spot tells us that buying a poppy from Orange Supermarket is just one way of contributing to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal. There's a lovely gravitas about it; and the sketchy softness of the brushstrokes adds a tenderness which alleviates the pragmatism of the script. Delicately done.

BT Sport
"Chelsea 6 v 0 Arsenal"
60s
14 Jul 2014
Arsenal must be wondering what they've done to deserve such a kicking from BT Sport, given that this is the second ad now in which they've been shown as the heavily defeated team. At least in this spot, a madly unfair decision by the ref is flagged up - which adds to the atmosphere and frenzy captured by its fast pace and excellent combination of live action and convincingly contrived reactions.

BT Sport
"Believe It"
60s
12 Jul 2014
One of a series in a new campaign for BT Sport which revolves around the line: "you have to see it to believe it" and shows everyone from fans to managers reacting to what they're seeing on the football pitch. So if you're about to breathe a sigh of relief that the footie's finally over, don't exhale just yet because this heralds the start of the Premier League season which is just getting ready to, er, kick off.

Daily Mirror
"Cheltenham Preparation"

9 Mar 2013
An amusing little ad promoting the Mirror's pull-out guide to the racing at this week's Cheltenham Festival. What appears to be jockeys racing on the flat are revealed to be groundsmen having a little contest of their own using their ride-on mowers. Good fun for a ten second spot.

Alton Towers
"Nemesis Sub Terra"
30s
27 Mar 2012
A marble gets away from two girls playing in a semi-animated fantasy world and falls through a grate. There it encounters a grimy underground world representative of the terror felt by those who take a ride on Nemesis Sub Terra at the advertised theme park.

Alton Towers
"Ice Age"
20s
19 Mar 2012
A new attraction at the advertised theme park enables punters to experience Ice Age. Not the Ice Age, you understand... that we'll get to experience before too long as rising energy prices put central heating out of reach. Anyhow, a neat combination of live action and animation manages to suggest that the new feature is a lot of fun.

Goodies
"Thank Goodness"
30s
19 May 2011
A food range for very young children called 'Goodies' is advertised using the theme music from the 1970s comedy show featuring Graeme Garden, Tim Brooke-Taylor and Bill Oddie in this animated ad. It's surprising that the voiceover wasn't provided by the last of this trio.

Burger King
"Cups"
20s
10 Jul 2010
There's a neat piece of comedy within the reveal in this heart-warmingly silly ad for Burger King. The fun part of the ad is squeezed into a very tight space because of the details of the special offer but the pace is beautifully judged to raise a quick laugh.

"Loved The World Over"

The shape of the Peugeot 206 is loved the World over according to this ad that sees it occuring in some pretty unlikely places as we see a beach buggy, a motorcycle sidecar and a stretch limousine all featuring the distinctive curvy front of the vehicle.
