The first advertising push for Apple’s AirPod earphones has a job on its hands. Last year’s Apple press conference sparked frenzied reactions online as headphone jacks and wires were consigned to history. Now the tech giant has to convince consumers that cordless earbuds are the future.

They’ve gone about it in typical Apple fashion. Compelling visuals and a catchy soundtrack are both present and correct as dancer Lil Buck goes for a walk with a difference. Once he’s tuned in, the world moves at a more rhythmic pace… and gravity enjoys a time-out.

It’s sheer freedom of movement as he dances up and down walls, sticks to car doors, and glides across a sea of lights. Anyone still with a spring in their step after watching ‘La La Land’ will appreciate the spectacle.

As for the AirPods themselves? Close-ups are few and far between, though do we learn removing one earbud pauses the music. A neat demonstration - getting your hands on them is another matter.

Waitrose
"Coming Home"

13 Nov 2016
adam&eveDDB have created a greater synergy between John Lewis's and Waitrose's advertising this Christmas. It's just over a year since they took over the supermarket's account and because of the way they've implemented some of the strategy that has made their partnership with John Lewis so successful, the connection between the two seems ever more evident.

Temptations
"Keep Them Busy"
75s
2 Nov 2016
Temptations demonstrate why it's so important to keep your furry friends occupied this Christmas with an ad which shows exactly what kind of destruction can occur when pussies are on the loose (not grabbed, Donald). Director Sam Brown introduces an idyllic island of Christmas in the middle of an empty room, which remains beautifully constructed until a horde of cats are let into the room and do what they do best: ruin it.

Every even-numbered year affords a new shot at glory for the England football team. Alas, each tournament also affords fans new ways to experience heartache as if it's a national pastime. With Euro 2016 just a few weeks away from kick off, however, Mars extol the power of belief in this amusing Channel crossing.

Having released their famous black horse from its stable last year with a gallop through history, Lloyds present another arresting film depicting life's noteworthy moments. We see the beast stride through the background of various scenarios rendered in slow motion. The technique allows the emotional heft of a new born baby, a proposal in a busy street, and the last goodbye to a loved one to be skilfully amplified.

The now very-familiar sound of a drum roll reaching its Whiplash crescendo makes its presence felt in this spot for Visa / Apple Pay. As the build-up intensifies, a staccato series of scenarios plays out. At the drop, everything resolves itself; and inbetween the Apple Pay app acts as a catalyst. It's smart and slick, but at the same time it does suggest that there's a degree of apprehension as to whether the app is going to allow a successful transaction or not.

This smart commercial tells the true story of LeeFest - an annual event which started in 2006 when Lee's parents went on holiday and he decided to have a festival in their back garden. According to this handsome commercial, he couldn't have done it without Google... which he used in 2006 to find out everything he needed to get started.

You get the sense that Marks & Spencer's autumn campaign is going to migrate gently into their Christmas campaign... and before we know it, it'll be January and we'll all be waking up in a ditch wondering what happened. You could hardly blame them if they opted to stay with this bright and breezy series... they're certainly getting the job done.

Not content with sharing the art of texture, tailoring, comfort and cashmere, M&S also want to share the art of shopping with them online. It's no surprise then to discover what a stylish experience it is - whatever device we're using, wherever we're using it, and for whatever product... young, old, male, female, there's no mainstream audience it won't appeal to.

The family-friendly revolution continues as Freeview reiterates its position in the face of subscription rivals. Adopting a bright-eyed television set brings this family together without the need to worry about contracts or small print. The lovely animation continues to be an engaging portrait of the service... though the likes of Sky (itself a Freeview partner) may take umbrage at being cast as the villain in this halcyon scenario.

"The Art of Texture"

Soft, shaggy, furry, fluffy - we all love a strokable texture and instinctively know when a material is good quality. The way a fabric flatteringly drapes, moulds or swishes can boost our self esteem like nothing else; something M&S imaginatively portrays as part of its excellent autumn campaign. Love the komondors - haven't seen one of those since Odelay's iconic album cover.

More gorgeousness from the M&S fashion campaign comes our way with this spot focusing on the soft and stylish qualities of cashmere. Sheep made of knitting needles and yarn, slinkily snug mufflers and lightweight shift sweaters all serve to underline the warmth and delicacy of this wool; and the simple, gunmetal-grey lighting is immensely classy.

"I Dreamed A Dream"

Freeview is equated with freedom in an expansive new piece of advertising for the free-to-air broadcasting service. In a world where subscriptions are ruthlessly pushed at us, the heroic underdog representing the advertised service is the champion of unorthodoxy. The film - made by Rogue's Sam Brown in harmony with the wizards at the Electric Theatre Collective from a script by Leo Burnett's Phillip Meyler and Darren Keff - is a triumph.

Marks & Spencer take us through the development of a tailored suit with another eye-catching addition to their Autumn/Winter campaign. Precision measurements and intricate sewing are rendered in breathless fashion as the brand continue to position themselves as the home of classic design with a thoroughly modern ethos.

Marks & Spencer
"The Art Of Silhouette"
30s
13 Sep 2015
Slick, sharp silhouettes define this range of M&S Autumn/Winter fashions. Beautifully lit and graded to show off the fabrics, the emphasis is on clean lines that are smart yet easy to wear - a '70s Annie Hall vibe for today, without the ditsiness. The brand presents everything with lashings of style - very impressive considering it has to appeal to Everywoman.

Another in the new Autumn / Winter fashion campaign for Marks & Spencer focuses on lingerie. Sumptuously silken and softly padded fabrics are offset against delicate lace in complementary shades; and when a model gracefully tumbles backwards she falls onto cushioning that yields yet supports. Plus the super at the end leaves you in no doubt that this is their comfiest range to date.

Another excellent ad for M&S offers a persuasive case for the brand even for those who wouldn't normally go there. Fast-paced, visually inventive and packed with sass, it not only parades a host of new season's looks before our dazzled eyes but manages to convey both quality and ethical pedigree.

"Horse Story"

29 Jun 2015
Lloyds have returned to the black horse for a grand statement about how the bank has been by our side for 250 years in this moving film by Rogue's Sam Brown. It's an unashamedly emotional piece of work which aims to reconnect the bank with the customers who rely on it. The film cleverly ups the ante as it unfolds with each vignette having slightly more impact than the last.

Branston
"Cheese Mountain"

17 Mar 2015
One for sci-fi and condiment fans alike, this ode to Close Encounters of the Third Kind from Branston is as well crafted as our obsessed protagonist's dairy produce monolith. The attention to detail on the mountain is terrific - the base features a farmer tending to his cows before they're milked, the milk is then transported, the cheese is crafted, and beaming figures offer up their bounty to their creator at the peak - but it's the contrast between the awed expression of its builder and the dismissive look on his wife's face that really makes this stand out.

A shoe-crazy young woman is delighted to discover that Lloyds like to surprise their current account customers with gifts from time to time. "It's on us!" they apparently said when she went to pay for her latest pair of heels. We're not quite sure how that works, but it seems they'll treat you to anything from a cupcake to plane tickets... which is nice.

Weight Watchers
"The Hard Part"

12 Feb 2015
If the VO in this terrific ad for Weight Watchers sounds vaguely familiar, that's because it is. At least, it is if you were a fan of Breaking Bad. Aaron Paul - the actor behind meth-making, drug-dealing Jesse Pinkman - casually urges us to just take a bite of whatever we fancy; all in dope terminology. Why not? We're in control. Sort of. After all, we gotta eat, right?

This is a very interesting approach... one that appears to take it for granted that all airlines are pretty much equal if you're among the privileged few who get to turn left once you're aboard. Instead of banging on about comfortable beds, impeccable service and staff who know what you need before you do, this terrific film by Rogue's Sam Brown asks what it says about you if you choose to fly with this airline.

It's fitting that we should be hoisting this in front of you on the day of the British Arrows Craft Awards as it's a perfect illustration of the wonderfully collaborative world of TVC production. A collection of unwanted items left behind at the end of a church hall sale offers a rendition of a familiar song, leaving us in no doubt that entertainment is best when it's free.

Are Lloyds casting themselves as Artful Dodgers in their latest TV ad? Probably not but it's an entertaining thought as they invoke memories of Mark Lester's turn as Oliver Twist in a couple of clips which sandwich the campaign's familiar use of still images. Meanwhile, the VO explains what he's always wanted more of.

Badass, hi-octane, supercharged - this is nothing if not rammed to the gills with attitude. Made for the Pan-African market, it's a slick paean to a mindset: black's not so much about the skin you're in as what's under your skin when you scratch the surface. Indeed, the spot's sheer polish and verve, fuelled by Kanye's Black Skinhead is impossible to resist... even if you're not a Guinness drinker yourself, you'll salute those who are.
