UK Supermarkets

A welcome return for Waitrose's elegant food campaign. This time, the supermarket entices us with some Vacherin cheese. The sound of cheese bubbling away is hard to resist. Before long, a slice of toast pierces the top layer and collects some of the oozing goodness beneath. An absence of VO or background music only enhances the experience.

Bonkers - sorry, experimental - chef Heston Blumenthal has concocted some unusual festive treats for Waitrose. If you're bored of bog-standard trifle you can bin the sherry and strawberry jelly and give bacon and banana a go. Better not spring this one on guests without warning, even if the food photography here does make the dessert look intriguing.

adam&eveDDB have created a greater synergy between John Lewis's and Waitrose's advertising this Christmas. It's just over a year since they took over the supermarket's account and because of the way they've implemented some of the strategy that has made their partnership with John Lewis so successful, the connection between the two seems ever more evident.

VW's latest ad supporting independent cinema should provide respite for those already weary of cute Christmas critters. A couple find themselves hunted by an extraterrestrial with an attitude problem. And you thought multi-storey car park charges were bad. An entertaining blend of sci-fi thrills and, erm, handsfree technology.

You'd think mafiosos would've learned by now never to accept a lift. Still, Mickey's happy to go for a ride in this latest Volkswagen ad promoting independent cinemas. At first, Mickey has no need to feel nervous. After all, it's just another car ride with Paulie - the latest in a long, distinguished line of Paulies - and Carmillo's suspiciously quiet son, right? Wrong!

This astonishing film for Save The Children (STC) is quite unlike any other charity ad we've seen. The frantic pace of the editing and its first person POV is truly visceral: not only does the spot completely immerse us in the action from the start but we feel giddy and breathless at its urgency. Right down to the super at the end assuring us that nearly every penny of our donation goes to the STC, not a single frame or image is wasted. Stunning work.

Having previously taken advantage of David Beckham's hitherto untapped comedic potential, H & M bring back the man in his capacity as someone - in the parlance of Derek Zoolander - really, really, ridiculously good looking. The ad has Becks hitting the town while wearing items from his Modern Essentials range. Turns out the whole town has the same idea.

Benecol
"Granddaughter"

26 Dec 2011
This charming commercial has a man in his sixties taking his young granddaughter to the shops. Together they buy all that is needed including the advertised product and demonstrate how "some things work better together". This doesn't just apply to the two protagonists... Benecol improves your chances of producing your cholesterol if you eat it as part of a healthy diet. (Though mainly it's the healthy diet).

Kayvan Novak phones in a performance in the latest series of bumpers advertising the lager's sponsorship of comedy output on Channel 4. As he's better known as the Fonejacker, he's used to operating in these circumstances.

This series of bumpers advertising the sponsorship of Channel 4's comedy output by Foster's features Jimmy Carr as a caller to the Australian helpline that's formed the backbone of the main television campaign. It's a neat idea as it bridges the gap between the main strategy and the lager's considerable sponsorship of comedy.

"Sun Cream"

7 Feb 2011
A man on holiday in Cyprus phones the Foster's helpline to ask advice after his mate asks him to apply sun cream to his back. This campaign continues to mine a seam of blokeish dilemmas to good comic effect.

Timely commercial for Christian Aid lets us know the difference that can be made by an early warning system in parts of the world prone to natural disaster. As Burma comes to terms with the monumental loss of life caused by the recent typhoon, we can only speculate whether advance warning would have helped.

The difference that can be made by filling with cash the envelope sent by Christian Aid is illustrated here by the pump which is enabling an African village to have fresh water. The envelopes themselves are represented as paper aeroplanes flying over everyone's heads.
