UNICEF
"Harry and Ahmed"
2 mins 05s
8 February 2017
UK Charities

This thoughtful UNICEF film reminds us that time doesn’t necessarily heal everything. Harry and Ahmed are separated by decades, yet united by hardship.

Side by side, the two describe their respective ordeals. Faces, countries, and technologies may change, but the language of suffering remains the same. When Harry and Ahmed’s stories overlap, the humbling effect is compounded.

Meanwhile, there are uncanny similarities between the footage of World War II and images from the current migrant crisis. History, it seems, has a nasty habit of repeating itself.

It’s a sombre tribute to humanity’s will to survive, but also its inability to learn from its mistakes. One can imagine Ahmed reciting this story seventy years later, with another child refugee sitting in his place. The charity hopes enough lessons are learned to avoid such a scenario.

McDonald's
"Speaker"
30s
13 Oct 2016
McDonald's presents another good-natured example of life when the body is willing, but the mind is asleep. This chap suffers a communication breakdown while trying to order a drive-thru breakfast - ordering through the speaker rather than a bin would be a good start. Director David Kerr coaxes some lovely, groggy frustration from the lead actor before his mistake dawns on him.

Sheba
"Resistance is Futile"
30s
17 Aug 2016
Superb 60-second ads are a pleasure... but when a spot manages to be absolutely note-perfect in just 30", we get an extra frisson of delight. So what better way to start the week than with this simple but brilliantly executed ad for Sheba? A man in the throes of a passionate encounter is rendered helpless by the telepathic commands of his cat - and whether you love these feline dictators or not, it's impossible not to laugh at this scenario.

VW Tiguan
"School Run"
60s
21 May 2016
Last year's shocking revelations about VW's use of technology to avoid accurate emissions readings was one of the most humiliating episodes in corporate history. Finding a way back from that kind of reputational self-sabotage was never going to be easy. One of the questions that must have weighed heavily on the car manufacturer as they sought to rehabilitate their image is 'should we keep apologising?'

Co-op Supermarkets
"Cheeseboard"
10s
2 Dec 2015
A cheeseboard is at the centre of this short ad supporting the Co-op's main Christmas campaign. As a pair of young men slide away on the treacherous pavement ice that's left an elderly couple housebound, the recipients of their kindness conclude that the treat in front of them is like something they'd see on the telly.

Co-op Supermarkets
"Chocolates"
10s
2 Dec 2015
A postscript to the main Co-op Christmas ad has a couple of seniors trying to work out which chocolate is which in a box which may have been gifted to them by the hero of the longer film. There's a nicely-judged irreverence as the pair seem slightly perplexed by the flavours of the soft-centred chocolates.

Co-op Supermarkets
"No Ice"
60s
2 Dec 2015
Loneliness is one of the key themes of this year's Christmas advertising and Co-op's contribution to this canon of work is an absolute cracker. A young man sets off to his local Co-op to buy some ice ahead of a party he's hosting because as his flatmate rightly asks: "How can we have a party without ice?"

Three
"Horror Movie Spoof"
5 mins 30s
3 Aug 2015
The Blair Witch Project provides much of the inspiration for this funny spoof of horror movie scenarios featuring Jackson - the muppet introduced by Three TVCs earlier this year. Accompanied by the hapless cameraman Steve, Jackson sets off into the woods to road test a new phone and appears utterly incapable of noticing the strange goings on.

Innocent Smoothies
"Waiting Game"
30s
14 Jul 2015
This charming piece from Innocent reveals that patience is key when it comes to choosing the ingredients that go into their range of juices and smoothies. Our stoic man and dog duo endure the changing seasons and some hefty hair growth before the raspberries are ready to be picked. Jaunty stuff, plus some nice work from the not so innocent couple in the background.

Three
"Singing Dictionary"
30s
18 Mar 2014
This wonderfully bonkers ad is even more elaborate than you initially realise. Part of a campaign to highlight the news that calls to 0800 numbers are now free with Three, it implies that no matter how obscure, silly or irrational your reason for calling a particular number, it won't cost you anything. And the Singing Dictionary line? It exists... along with five others specially created for the campaign. Genius.

Cobra Beer
"The Boss"
60s
1 Mar 2014
The stylish young entrepreneur who makes impossibly smooth Cobra beer also makes impossibly supportive bras according to this amusing ad for the Indian lager. We see him lording it over both domains as a VO explains that he's living the dream... an idea that many young males would struggle to argue with.

Honda
"Illusions"
60s
18 Oct 2013
The combined talents of mcgarrybowen and Gorgeous's Chris Palmer have created one of the most striking Honda commercials to be broadcast in quite some time. The proposition is that we should expect the impossible from cars these days and using 'impossible' imagery proves the perfect way to illustrate this idea.

Asda
"Beans"
30s
2 Apr 2013
This is one of those executions where the director appears to have gone above and beyond the call of duty. There's nothing wrong with the script, but this treatment breathes extra life into it and ensures that it stands out where it might not have done. Hats off to Good Egg's Chris Sweeney.

O2
"Emeli Sandé"
40s
6 Mar 2013
Apparently Emeli Sandé comes on your O2 phone without streaming or ads now, thanks to the above network's new 'tracks' app. In fact, it gives you non-stop access to the official top 40, which is probably why fuddy-duddy old DAVID will never have it or understand why "not streaming" is an advantage.

Kellogg's Nutri Grain Bars
"Sue"
30s
3 Sep 2012
A man wearing a pink dressing gown rushes aboard a commuter train looking for someone called Sue. When he finds her, he lectures her about the importance of having a good breakfast before contradicting himself by recommending the advertised biscuit-based snack.

Sony PlayStation
"Uncharted"
30s
28 Feb 2012
Another helping from the campaign that seeks to demonstrate that people who play video games become increasingly paranoid until eventually they cannot distinguish between real life and what they see on the screen and their sanity unfolds in dramatic fashion. Or something like that.

EA Sports
"A World In Play"
90s
22 Feb 2012
A variety of gaming enthusiasts address the camera directly as they claim that their world is different from ours. As we've pointed out before, it's disingenuous to claim that those who play these games are living more fully than the rest of us but when it's pitched with such flair... who cares?

Illamasqua
"Born Again"
2 mins
26 Jul 2011
This shortened version of the 'Born Again' film featuring 'This Is England' actress Vicky McClure isn't as explicit as the full edit and viewers may find it a bit cryptic. It promotes a competition that encourages punters to reinvent themselves via their Facebook account.

Illamasqua
"Born Again"
7 mins 10s
26 Jul 2011
This lengthy viral for Illamasqua follows the progress of a woman with a dark secret and a difficult task ahead of her. How ever much a captive audience might admire it, it's not clear that it's got what it takes to captivate the twitchy online hordes.

L'Oreal Elnett
"Keep Hold Of It"
30s
9 May 2011
Cheryl Cole manages to spit out a series of innuendoes without making any of them the least bit sexy in this curious ad for hairspray. It won't be long before the Geordie lass is launched on an unsuspecting American public and they're left baffled by her inability to tone down her accent.

Juicy Couture
"Viva La Juicy"
20s
4 Apr 2011
Juicy Couture, eh? This looks like it's aimed at a younger sensibility than perfume ads tend to be. It's still a pile of pretentious guff but it does have the merit of being visually engaging. But it make us wonder what the stuff actually smells like... Wrigley's Juicy Fruit, perhaps?

Yeo Valley
"Live In Harmony"
2 mins
9 Oct 2010
The obvious pun was ultimately unavoidable, wasn't it? This excellent film highlighting the advertised range's organic credentials features a comical juxtaposition as farmers rap about the virtues of the products.

Diesel
"For Women Only"
30s
10 Sep 2008
A pretentious question... an autistic pianist... hints of Sapphic love... yep, it's perfume country. There was a time when you didn't really need to say that a perfume was for women only but apparently you do these days. Well, fair enough... we'll have the Yorkie bars... and women can have Diesel.

Witch
"Seaweed"
20s
2 Feb 2007
Latest in the series of ads demonstrating that it's easier to use Witch's range of skincare products than it is to use radical remedies. Amusing as this series is, the effectiveness must be dented by the lack of resonance... even as hyperbole.
