Superb 60-second ads are a pleasure... but when a spot manages to be absolutely note-perfect in just 30"

So what better way to start the week than with this simple but stunningly executed ad for Sheba? A man in the throes of a passionate encounter is rendered helpless by the telepathic commands of his cat - and whether you love these feline dictators or not, it's impossible not to laugh at this scenario.

Everything about it is considered to the last detail. Not only is there the excellent decision to cast a man in what's usually (and tediously) a woman's role, but he's not the buff hunk we've come to expect playing the love interest.

Then there's the cat with its Midwich Cuckoo gaze propelling the poor man into the kitchen to take care of its own appetites. The woman blindsided by her own jumper. The sprig of parsley on the cat's plate. The man's socked and shuffling feet, restricted by his dropped trousers. And, best of all, his face at the very end... a picture of embarrassment, incomprehension and innocence.

It's all terrific, and director Guy Shelmerdine should take a bow. Whereas others might have pussyfooted around the idea, he's gone full-on and taken a super script from AMV's Nicholas Hulley and Nadja Lossgottmade to make an ad you want to share.

Superb 60-second ads are a pleasure... but when a spot manages to be absolutely note-perfect in just 30", we get an extra frisson of delight. So what better way to start the week than with this simple but brilliantly executed ad for Sheba? A man in the throes of a passionate encounter is rendered helpless by the telepathic commands of his cat - and whether you love these feline dictators or not, it's impossible not to laugh at this scenario.

VW Tiguan
"School Run"
60s
21 May 2016
Last year's shocking revelations about VW's use of technology to avoid accurate emissions readings was one of the most humiliating episodes in corporate history. Finding a way back from that kind of reputational self-sabotage was never going to be easy. One of the questions that must have weighed heavily on the car manufacturer as they sought to rehabilitate their image is 'should we keep apologising?'

Road Safety
"Photocopying"
60s
10 Dec 2015
This latest road safety film features Malcolm; another individual left isolated and chastised by those around him. His promising career trajectory has taken a dive and he's left photocopying the day away. Why? All because he refused to have a drink. The ad shrewdly highlights the effect that peer pressure can have at this time of the year.

Road Safety
"Doghouse"
60s
1 Dec 2015
This public information film features Brendan. Brendan is in the doghouse. Why? No, not because he recklessly decided to drive after a drink. It's because he didn't... leaving his missus, Sandra, to walk home from the train station in torrential rain. As you can see, Sandra is not best pleased. What makes it such a powerful message is that it looks at the consequences of such a choice and legitimises the drinker's refusal to get behind the wheel.

JBL
"The CordFail Effect"
30s
16 Nov 2015
American audio specialists JBL know the truth about headphones - there is no way to get gracefully untangled. This ad for their range of wireless headphones does however present a chain of epic fails in brilliant fashion. Unwitting architects of their own calamities, this lot would have a much better day in store had they switched to wireless.

Esso
"Vroom"

17 Jun 2015
A mum seems quite irritated by the engine noises made by her son as they head to his school but once he's out of the way, mum has a crack herself. This is because the petrol she's used makes her car feel racier, it would seem... which is a fun idea without the slightest hint of truth about it. The kind of car driver who cares which petrol he puts in his car (and the choice of male pronouns is quite deliberate) is too busy writing death threats to the BBC about their vilification of Jeremy Clarkson to pay any attention to this ad.

Barclaycard
"Make the Most of It"
60s
15 May 2015
Everyday life is celebrated by this charming film for Barclaycard which has a protagonist whose problems (and hairstyle) seem to have been imported from the 1970s. 'Hapless dad' is such an advertising staple that it's a relief to see him portrayed with a little less haplessness (without turning him into an out and out hero) and actually appearing to enjoy life's domesticity rather than finding it a drag.

Hertz
"Cleaned Out"
60s
15 Apr 2015
adam&eveDDB once again prove themselves masters of domestic comedy in this finely-judged ad for Hertz directed by Smuggler's Guy Shelmerdine. Mum and Dad offer tender farewells to their son as he flies the figurative nest but there's a rude awakening waiting for them when they retreat into their house for a consoling cuppa.

moneysupermarket.com
"Graham"
40s
10 Aug 2014
Happy chap Graham has saved so much dosh with the price comparison site that he feels like he's driving around on an elephant. The pachyderm sashays along with a certain swagger as people gaze up admiringly and a small boy with a rich baritone tells 'Gram' just how moneysupermarket he is. It lacks the panache of 'Phil' and his invisible car, but it certainly gets your attention.

Airwaves
"Passion Killer"
20s
16 Jun 2014
Airwaves do 'fresh breath' ads so much better than their pan-global competitors with their unreal models and dazzling teeth. In this entertaining spot, a very real couple are walking through the streets after what's evidently been a great night out, and after popping some gum into her mouth, the young woman decides to take her man back to her place. Things don't quite go to plan, however.

MTS
"Internet Baby"
70s
28 Feb 2014
In this captivating piece of work, the medical team assisting at a birth are stunned when the baby emerges unaided and makes a beeline for all the mobile devices within reach. It's evidently the world's first natural-born internet user, and represents India's mobile phone network MTS, who claim to be "born for the internet".

Barclays
"Family Portraits"
60s
13 Mar 2013
Another beautifully weighted piece of cynicism designed to remind us that life is what happens while we're "busy making other plans". The hapless male at the centre of it all needs to find a way out and and DAVID imagines he might have stumbled across the flyer for the advertised ISA while searching for his father's old service revolver.

Barclays
"You Vs Unconditional Love"
60s
14 Jan 2013
A daughter makes her dad's life a misery in this beautifully cynical ad drawing attention to an interesting new product from Barclays. This could be the moment when banks start to market themselves again and customers begin to benefit from their willingness to innovate. We're right behind them... provided they promise to behave this time.

Kwik-Fit
"Barbara & Duncan"
20s
1 Oct 2012
Duncan gets extra bacon whenever he has breakfast at the café where Barbara works because she thinks that that's why she gets such a great deal when she goes to Kwik-Fit. Perhaps it's time to make one of these where the punter thinks they're getting a great deal because of the used notes they surreptitiously hand to a member of staff.

Kwik-Fit
"Paul & Neil"
20s
5 Sep 2012
Another in this amusing series which suggests that Kwik-Fit's customers believe there's a personal reason why they get such a good price. In this execution, one man believes that the electric wok he gave as a wedding present many years ago still wins him special discounts when he needs an MOT.

Orange
"Sweeney Goldspot"
65s
8 Aug 2012
The latest Goldspot ad for Orange is something of a return to form. Ray Winstone and Ben Drew turn up at a London pub in their roles as Regan and Carter in the rebooted version of The Sweeney but something is amiss. It couldn't be that they've found themselves in the midst of an Orange commercial, could it?

Kwik-Fit
"Paul & Sue"
20s
4 Jul 2012
Another in this winning series suggesting that people think they're getting a special deal because of their relationship with a member of staff at Kwik-Fit. The secret to these is the understated way they're performed and both actors in this piece are terrific as Sue feeds Paul's monstrous cat and thinks she's getting discounts on tyres in return.

Kwik-Fit
"Craig & Andrew"
20s
3 May 2012
Another in this winning series which has people wrongly imagining that they're getting a special rate at the advertised car repair retailer because of a relationship they have with one of the staff. In this case, a man suspects that helping an acquaintance move house has led to discounts on tyres and the like.

Kwik-Fit
"Linda"
20s
2 Apr 2012
Samantha Brick lookalike Linda imagines that the cheap rates she gets at Kwik-Fit are down to the brief romance she had with Mark - who works there - when the two of them were at school. Sadly she's just a tiny bit deluded and it has nothing to do with her flirtatious manner.

Kwik-Fit
"Mates Rates"
30s
1 Mar 2012
Because he plays in the same Sunday league team as Matt who works at Kwik-Fit, Brian imagines that he's getting a discount whenever he gets a tyre fixed or his exhaust system replaced. Little does he know that everyone gets the same rate.

Argos
"3D TV"
30s
21 Jan 2012
The alien family voiced by Bill Nighy and Caroline Quentin are trying out 3D television and they're a little confused by the need to wear "sunglasses". Not necessarily the best approach to adopt when trying to shift the bleedin' things.

Argos
"Coffee Machine"
20s
7 Dec 2011
The alien family are absolutely delighted with a flashy looking coffee machine that they've received for Christmas. You may be able to see the gag coming but it's still pretty funny and this is certainly the best ad in this year's seasonal campaign for the high street retailer.

Argos
"Transformer"
30s
23 Nov 2011
One of the alien children from the previous commercial is amazed by a Transformer toy. He continually changes it from a truck into a robot and back again and his whole family appears to share his astonishment.

Argos
"Boredom"
30s
23 Nov 2011
The alien family headed by an animated creature using Bill Nighy's voice are bored. So they turn to the Argos catalogue and order some audio equipment and, before long, they're tapping their toes and getting ready to strut their stuff.
