Great Ormond Street Hospital
"Welcome to Ordinary World"
60s
30 January 2017
UK Charities

This ad for Great Ormond Street hospital is crafted with skill, serving both as a deft parody and a poignant reminder of the struggle children with serious illnesses face in their day-to-day lives.

The first part of the ad has all the characteristics of bad theme park advertising to a tee. The voiceover straining for enthusiasm, the shooting star graphics sloppily applied, the hyperbolic script turning a trip to the supermarket into a magical adventure. The description of a duck as 'the creature from the park lagoon' feels particularly spot-on.

Cumulatively it only serves to heighten the reveal - when we cut to a child dwarfed by a hospital bed, for whom getting out into the ordinary world really would be an adventure. It's a jarring contrast handled with care by director Andy McLeod, and it leaves a lasting impression.

This ad for Great Ormond Street hospital is crafted with skill, serving both as a deft parody and a poignant reminder of the struggle children with serious illnesses face in their day-to-day lives. We see a parody of a theme park ad for 'Ordinary World', complete with a hyperbolic script which turns a trip to the supermarket into a magical thrill ride... but for kids stuck in hospital, it really is the adventure they want.

Whiskas
"Hairbrush"
20s
23 Oct 2016
Whiskas continue to celebrate curiosity in this amusing ad which features a cat who hasn't quite figured out that hairbrushes are nigh on unkillable. Julian Barratt's voiceover brings the kitty's inner monologue to life, as he stalks and pounces on his unsuspecting, spiny prey - only to be distracted by the sound of much more edible food being opened.

Cat owners will be familiar with the inner monologue of the kitty in Whiskas' new ad. While he thinks of himself as a calculating, ruthless hunter stalking his prey with satisfaction, the opening of a Whiskas packet reveals him as a domestic cat watching a dripping tap. This is a fun exploration of the curiosity of cats... in a non-lethal sense.

Lotto
"James Blunt"
40s
16 Jun 2016
Known here at DAVID HQ as "the campaign that keeps on giving" for very good reason, Lotto's superb series of celebrity caricatures returns with serial balladeer and thoroughly nice chap James Blunt outlining his jackpot masterplan: to make everyone feel beautiful by appearing in their mirrors.

Guinness
"Ski Resort"
1 min 45s
11 May 2016
The words 'ski resort' and 'equator' are not the most natural of bedfellows, but this stylish spot from Guinness proves that they can nestle comfortably in the same sentence. A group of friends decide to set out in search of a rumoured resort in the unlikely setting of Indonesia and this is their journey, ably assisted by bottles of the black stuff.

"Britain's Got Talent Sponsorship"

We've now seen The National Lottery's Katie Price 'KTV' channel in various guises since it launched last summer, but the concept manages to lend itself well to the bumper format. With each ad break for Britain's Got Talent, we get a glimpse at what a Katie Price-laden schedule would look like, including sports reporting that makes Alan Partridge look a broadcast heavyweight.

Lotto
"Vinnie Jones"
40s
18 Oct 2015
As with the previous executions, the broadcast version of the new National Lottery film gives us a taste of what's in store if we watch the extended version. Vinnie Jones wants to spend his lottery windfall on a plan to channel everyone's anger into a new energy source and this lovely piece of tomfoolery explains how he's going to do it.

Lotto
"Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen"

15 Jul 2015
AMV and Biscuit's Jeff Low have saved the best until last. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (LLB) leaves Piers Morgan and Katie Price trailing in his wake as he mercilessly sends himself up on behalf of the National Lottery. Laurence Llewelyn Bowen's comedy version of himself - on the other hand - is merely him with the volume turned up to eleven.

Lotto
"Piers Morgan (Extended Version)"

7 Jul 2015
The extended version of The National Lottery spot featuring Piers Morgan, is - it has to be said - even better than the broadcast spot. Much as we hate to admit it, he plays the part frighteningly well, and the various scenarios bear the weight of additional time without sagging in the slightest - all of which goes to show how strong a piece of work this is.

Lotto
"Katie Price"
2 mins 20s
7 Jul 2015
Another entertaining ad for The National Lottery focuses on fame-hungry Katie Price, and the dreams she plans to realise on scooping a massive prize. Hats off again to Jeff Low for evidently putting her at ease enough to enjoy running with the gag... she proves herself very game, and her limitations - both acting and expression-wise - are key to the fun.

"Piers Morgan"

Piers Morgan trades on his reputation in this clever ad for the National Lottery which suggests his egotism would know no bounds if he were to win a big prize. The idea that we should buy a ticket to make that less likely isn't mathematically sound but is nonetheless persuasive as surely we would all do anything to stop the former newspaper editor from pushing ahead with the tongue-in-cheek plans he outlines in this commercial.

Cancer Research
"Lump"
60s
6 Mar 2015
An astonishingly simple, yet immensely clever ad for Cancer Research pinpoints exactly how human nature tends to react to gradual change... by ignoring what's happening. The pavement on a busy high street begins to grow an unsightly bump, which slowly gets bigger as the days pass. Hidden cameras observe the way people skirt round it with a fleeting glance - if it's not yet causing a problem, they don't have to deal with it.

Sainsbury's
"Fish Finger Sandwiches"

23 Sep 2013
Orange Supermarket demonstrates that you can make the humble fish finger appear relatively sophisticated with a bit of artful positioning on freshly-sliced bread and a drizzle of their tartare sauce in this - ahem - tastefully shot spot.

Sainsbury's
"Pizza and Salad"
30s
5 Sep 2013
This lovely ad reflects Sainsbury's current confidence. The food on display looks fresh and healthy and - although price plays a part in the communication - it's secondary to the main message. It's a great way for Sainsbury's to press home their advantage and make it clear to shoppers disillusioned with other brands that there's a better alternative within their orange-liveried stores.

Sainsbury's
"Bacon, Spinach and Pine Nuts"

8 Sep 2013
Lovely, low-key spot showing how effortlessly a salad can be prepared using good-quality - yet perfectly affordable - ingredients. We very much like the way it isn't making a shouty song and dance: the style of filming is intimate yet detached; a glimpse of someone else's world who isn't aware the camera's rolling.

National Lottery Euromillions
"Blockbuster"
30s
26 Jul 2013
Buy a Euro Millions lottery ticket and you might win yourself a celebrity lifestyle. That means eating incinerated food, driving a car with no roof, owning what looks like a deluxe Tesco Extra and learning to live with saddle sores. Oh, and let's not forget the paranoia that comes from suspecting everyone's laughing at you behind your back.

Sainsbury's
"Apple Pie"
30s
5 May 2013
In this scenario it's apple pie that's getting the Kylie treatment. 'Everyday food made special' is the strapline, and a pretty convincing line it is too given the loving care with which the food is filmed. It's a simple campaign and very distinctive - hear that track a few times and you soon learn to associate it with Orange Supermarket.

Sainsbury's
"Yogurt and Muesli"
30s
1 May 2013
Kylie's track is put to good use again in this new spot for Sainsbury's. The languid version of 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' accompanies the sumptuously-filmed assembly of someone's breakfast muesli... dollops of yogurt, sprinklings of tasty-looking cereal, trickles of honey... what with the small price points too, it's not only giving Tesco a run for its money but the posh supermarkets too.

Sainsbury's
"Sausages"

There's nothing more infuriating than watching someone try on your clothes and having to begrudgingly accept that they look much better on them than on you. Tesco will know exactly how that feels after watching this gorgeous ad for Sainsbury's which uses an unfamiliar take on Kylie Minogue's Can't Get You Out of My Head.

Plan International
"She'll Learn"

11 Oct 2012
This excellent film for the charity that aims to improve the lot of women in the developing world takes a look at young girls living in the street. It offers a poignant commentary on their prospects while highlighting the aims of Plan and manages to be hopeful and uplifting despite the reality it depicts.

Plan International
"Because I Am A Girl"
30s
11 Oct 2012
Freida Pinto fronts this excellent film for the campaigning charity which aims to improve the lot of women and girls in parts of the world where they are seen as less than their male counterparts. It offsets the grim outlook by stating the aims of Plan and the second half is imbued with positivity.

Walkers
"Giant Ridge"

14 Sep 2012
A huge climbing wall shaped like the advertised snack was erected in East London for the purposes of this ad. Gary Lineker didn't climb it though - he's afraid of heights. It's odd though... DAVID feels sure he saw another bit of film in which Lineker is given a special feather by a mouse that enables him to fly so he shouldn't really be scared of being up high.

Foot Locker
"Stock Room"
30s
16 May 2012
A non-stop sequence of tomfoolery is enhanced by the sounds of giggling from behind the camera as it make it sound as though this was filmed in a clandestine fashion. It makes for an extremely engaging piece and it clearly has the potential to be an online sensation.

Twinings
"Light & Delicate"

19 Nov 2010
This is one of a pair of new commercials advertising one of the more exotic blends available from the posh tea manufacturers. This time it's green tea that's being advertised and, at least, this really is tea. The ad has a very gentle tone which is plainly designed to chime with the relaxing experience of drinking the advertised product.

Twinings
"Floral Range"

19 Nov 2010
This is one of a pair of new commercials advertising one of the more exotic blends available from the posh tea manufacturers. The word tea seems pretty arguable if the resulting drink doesn't contain tea and it seems odd that it has become a generic word while, say, coffee is sensibly reserved for drinks containing coffee.
