UK Holiday Companies

This is the extended version of the HomeAway commercial we brought you recently. Parks & Recreation’s Nick Offerman recites an ode to the great family getaway. While he champions spending quality time with just the family, we’re also shown some creative means of destroying office equipment.

It’s a busy ad. Each vignette fights for your attention, and some are more memorable than others. Still, the ad flits between the daily grind and idyllic destinations at a lively pace. Kudos to Grandpa and his multi-coloured Skivvies, especially.

Offerman’s contributions to this campaign continue to pay off. His droll delivery of the rhyming script succeeds where chirpier VOs would arguably fail. Our personal favourite? ‘Forget the in-tray/You’ve got a bidet’. The site believes we should all enjoy such pleasures without others cramping our style.

27 Dec 2016
HomeAway continue their mission to persuade us that there's a better alternative to AirBnB through the medium of humour and - in this case - song. Nick Offerman provides both via a winning VO performance which fans of US comedy Parks & Recreation will appreciate... even if no one else has any idea who it is.

Asda George
"First Day"

25 Jul 2016
We at DAVID gripe and groan about ads with rhyming scripts - but every now and again, along comes one which we can hold up as an example of how it should be done. With its natural rhythm and delightful delivery, this spot for George at Asda demonstrates that rhymes can sound inventive and charming rather than the last resort of the uninspired.

Direct Line
"Ballcock"
30s
18 Apr 2016
Direct Line's long-running campaign is at its best when the script veers close to the edge, and this latest execution starring Winston Wolfe elicits a cheeky laugh. A drenched homeowner requires the fixer's assistance, and the unruffled Wolfe 'threatens' him with Joey the plumber (played by Gorgeous George from crime caper 'Snatch', if we're not mistaken) and his expertise. Playfully crude.

Hindquarters
"Shake Your Hindquarters"
75s
31 Mar 2016
High-end dog accessory brand Hindquarters introduce themselves with a promo-inspired ad that's nothing to be sniffed at. Featuring more twerking than Miley Cyrus in a mirror showroom, a variety of dog breeds are shown shaking what their mothers gave them to the sound of Geranimo & Mikey's 'Walk the Dog'.

HomeAway
"Why Share?"
30s
19 Jan 2016
Those who like their advertising to have a combative edge are going to enjoy this commercial for travel service HomeAway. It concentrates its message on the contrast between a holiday home where you're required to share the space with others (ie: the kind of thing that might happen when you book through AirBnB) and the kind of holiday you can expect when you have the facilities all to yourselves.

HSBC

HSBC's association with 'rugby sevens' continues according to this vibrant piece which uses special effects to underline the so-called 'excitement' of the sport. Natural and unnatural forces of nature alike are evoked by the animation sitting atop the live action and manage to make rugby look a lot more dynamic than it actually is.

Toyota
"The Dust"
3 mins 30s
28 Jul 2015
This extended jaunt at the racetrack sees Michael Vaughan and Glenn McGrath settle their rivalry with a fittingly cricket-themed time trial. As we've seen with Toyota's lovely TV idents, the creative team at Saatchi & Saatchi knows how to present an irreverent take on the sport with plenty of amusing touches to keep us entertained.

Toyota
"Cricket Idents"

15 Jul 2015
Great production values help give these fun Toyota idents an air of authenticity amidst the technological buffoonery. Unlike the teams battling it out in this year's Ashes series, these players have all sorts of car-inspired accoutrements to help with their game. Top execution and an effective showcase for the brand's features as well.

Rekorderlig
"Silver Skaters"
60s
23 Jun 2015
DAVID's never been a cider drinker (apart from that unfortunate incident in 6th form which everyone promised to draw a line under) but if anything were to ever tempt him back to the stuff it would be this marvellous ad for Swedish premium brand Rekorderlig. Two blondly hirsute chaps powerskate their way around a frozen fjord to the ethereal song of their coach... genius.

Ireland
"Wild Atlantic Way"
90s
30 May 2014
Ireland looks beautiful in this, and there's no suggestion that it isn't a grey and rather dank place. Like the recent work promoting Wales, it truthfully acknowledges that this isn't a place you visit for the weather and makes the moody broodiness an asset rather than trying to deny it or pretend it's an altogether different kind of destination.

Anchor Butter
"Birthday Celebration"
10s
12 Aug 2011
This postscript to the recent celebration ad reveals that we can win prizes and a share of £125,000. It isn't clear how we achieve either of these things so we'll just have to buy some Anchor butter to find out. Oh Lordy... we've fallen into their dastardly trap.

Samsung Televisions
"Incredible Journey"

26 May 2011
That's more like it. If you thought the shortened version of this ad was a bit lacklustre then we're sure you'll agree that the idea works much better in this minute-long edit. A train journey is enlivened no end by the images available on its 'windows' after passengers put the advertised high definition televisions in place of the usual glass.

Anchor Butter
"Celebrating 125 Years"
40s
25 May 2011
The cows of Anchor are celebrating a special anniversary with a party in this wonderfully silly piece for the New Zealand butter. As in the previous ads, delight is provided by the unlikeliness of the cows' activities as they are anthropomorphised for comic effect.

Samsung Televisions
"Take The Journey"
30s
20 May 2011
This ad shows people replacing train windows with the advertised televisions and thereby able to watch the wonders of the world instead of the English countryside. It's a neat conceit but one that could do with a bit more space and time.

Drench
"Cubehead"
60s
5 Aug 2010
We've heard of getting your head together but this is ridiculous. A young man waiting for a train in a subway station treats his head as though it is a Rubik's cube but he cannot restore it to its correct state until he's had a slug of the advertised drink.

Samsung Televisions
"New Dimension"
60s
28 Apr 2010
This ad has been hyped as the new Sony Bravia and you can see why as it uses the same combination of impressive spectacle and public event. More importantly, it also has an impressive central claim which is made extremely persuasively.

Samsung Televisions
"Office Cleaner"
10s
23 Apr 2010
The new television sets are being hoisted to the roof of a building as an office cleaner goes about his business. This is the latest in a series of teasers building up to a significant launch ad on Wednesday 28 April (probably during the Champions' League semi-final).

Samsung Televisions
"Street"

23 Apr 2010
Another in this series of teasers for Samsung's grand new ad shows people heading through the streets carrying their television sets. Where are they going? Will all be revealed on Wednesday night during the Barcelona versus Inter Milan match? Yeah... reckon.

Samsung Televisions
"Lake"

Another teaser for the forthcoming Samsung ad which promises a new dimension in televisions. In this ad someone is wading across a pond while holding the television over his head as though it's a cross between a shield and a solar panel.

"A New Dimension"

A spectacular new television commercial is on the way and this is merely a teaser for the main event. We glimpse some activity in the street in the mirrored window of a nearby building... what's going on? And, more importantly, are advertising awards in the offing?

Drench
"Goldfish"

This short excerpt from the recent Goldfish commercial features one of the most amusing moments as the little aqua appears to successfully workout which of three cups a small ball has been placed under because he is swimming in Drench.

A marvellous follow-up to the Jazz Hamsters piece has a pair of men showing what a difference a little of the advertised water can make to a goldfish who has been specially trained to make its way around a devilishly difficult underwater assault course.
