UK Cars

Festive traffic jams are no concern for a musical family in this excellent ad for VW. It's a familiar scene: kids bored in the back, parents equally bored in the front as the cars around them go nowhere. All that's missing is an 'are we nearly there yet?'. That is, until Dad decides to bust out some tunes and take a creative approach to killing time - one the rest of the family soon join in with.

Peter Lydon knows how to coax a tune from his cast - he once turned Hodor from Game of Thrones into a chatterbox, after all. The performances here are terrific, everything from the Dad's sassy head bob to the previously disengaged son in the backseat suddenly singing lead.

Cutting to another family watching the performance from their car - soundless - is another great moment which captures the unself-consciousness of every truly committed car karaoke singer. The choice of music for the acapella performance is inspired, we're only sorry it didn't help propel the Darkness to Christmas number one. Every year...

Temptations
"Don't You (Forget About Me)"
2 mins 43s
9 Aug 2016
There will come a day when cat videos fade away, but today is not that day - not if Temptations have anything to do with it. The brand has become synonymous with work inspired by internet virals in recent times, and after their Elton John-scored Christmas ad, they now turn to Simple Minds for this beautifully realised tale of a cat yearning for attention from his material girl owner.

Halifax
"The Flintstones"
60s
7 Jun 2016
Halifax once again raid the Hanna-Barbera vaults with due care and affection as Fred and WIlma Flintstone decide to switch to a bank with a twenty-first century approach to customer service. Despite an inauspicious encounter with the branch's see-through door, Fred quickly warms to the affable adviser who details the bank's £125 welcome bonus for switchers.

"Top Cat"

22 Apr 2016
Halifax have turned to Hanna-Barbera's cult classic Top Cat to help them demonstrate that they're thoroughly decent when it comes to lending money for mortgages. The mischievous feline uses a sob story to gain the sympathy of the Halifax staffer helping with his application, though - it has to be said - it's hard to win over an algorithm and human decision-making has all but been eliminated from the mortgage application process these days!

Waitrose
"Cheddar For Afters"
20s
9 Dec 2015
The latest instalment in Waitrose's Christmas campaign is cheesy in the best possible way. Roger McGough provides a familiar lyrical bent to a script celebrating the food that provides a little light relief after the main feast. Wookey Hole cheddar is suggested as an after-dinner treat in appealing fashion, and the camera gets in close enough for you to get a good whiff of it.

Waitrose
"Gingerbread Stuffing"
10s
11 Nov 2015
Having presented the viewing public with their impressive 60" main course, Waitrose turn their focus to plugging the individual ingredients that can help elevate your Christmas nosh. If punters are on the fence about the merits of gingerbread stuffing and the like, the warm tone of these short ads will help nudge shoppers towards taking a punt.

Waitrose
"Make It... Christmas"
60s
4 Nov 2015
The Christmas comfort dial has been turned to maximum in this sumptuous commercial for posh supermarket's seasonal offerings. Roger McGough has been kept on after the switch from BBH to adam&eveDDB and so - it has to be said - has the winning tone established years ago by Stuart Douglas.

Waitrose
"The Warmest Season"
60s
1 Oct 2015
When the most obvious choice is also the smartest choice it always sounds a bit denigrating to describe it as a 'no-brainer' but when the John Lewis Partnership decided to extend its relationship with adam&eveDDB by asking the agency to create Waitrose's advertising, it really couldn't be described any other way.

Braun Electric Shavers
"Next Level"
65s
30 Jun 2015
Memories of dusty video game cartridges and controllers thrown against the wall in frustration come flooding back thanks to this lovingly rendered commercial for Braun. In the rich vein of classic 2D platformers like Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog, the aim of the game is to acquire the all-important Braun S3 electric razor.

Snickers
"Perfect Face"
1 min 51s
9 Apr 2015
An extension of the 'You're not you when you're hungry' campaign sees popular YouTubers joining in. The Snicker-branded videos start off as they normally would for each vlogger, but then go awry because their presenters haven't eaten. Some are more successful than others, like this one for online art tutor Leonardo Pereznieto.

"Top DIY Hacks"
2 mins 08s
9 Apr 2015
An extension of the 'You're not you when you're hungry' campaign sees popular Youtubers joining in. In this video, a popular DIY presenter is off his game - which is down to the fact he hasn't eaten. So instead of the normally sensible advice he'd give, viewers are advised to use something entirely different to silicon as a sealant in the bathroom... and it doesn't stop there.

Open University
"Life-Changing Learning"
90s
25 Mar 2015
Agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and director Nicolas Jack Davies take the Open University's courses and show how they can reveal untapped potential in a diverse variety of people. The dedication required is not lost here as the protagonists study in bed, fall asleep under a blanket of notes, and try to manage the work/life balance as best they can.

Sainsbury's
"Active Kids"
40s
29 Jan 2014
In this charming commercial promoting Sainsbury's Active Kids programme, we're introduced to Gary - a schoolboy very proud of what's he's made in home economics class. When his father asks if he made it by himself, he reveals that he had a little help and we get to see that it his kitchen assistants were David Beckham and Ellie Simmonds. We suspect that the beautifully captured look of adulation on the young actor's face was completely genuine.

Sainsbury's
"Christmas in a Day"
40s
1 Dec 2013
This spot captures to perfection the way Christmas can disinhibit us all. Half a glass of sherry and nana's doing Gangnam Style, grandad's dusting off his tap skills, and everyone's having a laugh. What's so clever is that this gives you a rush of warmth as if everyone you see here is a member of your extended family - it feels as if for a brief time at least, we're all the same and all together.

Sainsbury's
"Christmas Moments"
3 mins 30s
13 Nov 2013
Sainsbury's has created a spot that fills an entire ad break, without mentioning the brand at all until the end. This is, in fact, not just an ad but a trailer for a film directed by Kevin Macdonald which will be available on YouTube at the end of November. After a similar ad yesterday, are we witnessing a new trend?

EDF Energy
"It's Beautiful"
30s
8 Apr 2013
Here's an ad to brighten your day... Zingy's back and he's got a nice ride... as they say. He sits aboard a lugubrious hound and tours the garden in a stately fashion. There's little more to it than that, but if children up and down the land have warmed to this character as much as DAVID's have then it's all that's needed to provoke the most bizarre pester bombardment.

Mars Bars
"A New Hero"
30s
15 Apr 2012
This lovely commercial has a steward stepping into the breach when the England goalkeeper is injured during a match against Holland. Inspired by the Mars Bar he was eating, he pulls off a marvellous series of saves. The first of the penalty takers is Arsenal's Robin van Persie but the celebrating England team look like a bunch of nobodies... oh.

Doritos
"Dip Desperado"
2 mins 10s
4 Jul 2011
This lengthy ad for Doritos tells the story of the Dip Desperado... a fabled champion of tortilla chip hurling. It's a beautifully composed piece of work with a terrific central performance in an ad that holds the attention from start to finish.

Wrigley's Extra
"Everyone"

28 Feb 2011
Puppets representing the food that could damage our teeth run riot in an office in this amusing ad for Wrigley's Extra. The little critters steadily accumulate until someone uses the advertised product to vanquish them and they're ejected through a window.

Heinz Baked Beans
"Containers"
30s
12 Nov 2010
This ad celebrates our tendency to set aside baked beans in our fridges and uses this as a device to introduce an innovative piece of packaging. Given that it's largely a sequence of static images, it's a remarkably effective piece of advertising. Excellent work.

Doritos
"Attack On Westminster"

13 Jun 2010
This is the winning entry in Doritos new competition for aspiring ad makers. An initial short-list was whittled down to a final three before the public was invited to vote for their favourite. Well, is Joe Public better at making ads than you lot?

In this contribution to the Doritos's King Of Ads series, we get to see three of the pitches made to the judges. Noel Clarke behaves like such an arse that you start to wonder if the whole thing has been staged but, no, it seems he's just an arse.

"King Of Ads - Episode One"

This is well worth a look. A brief glimpse at each of the fifteen finalists in Doritos's 'King Of Ads' competition. The way it's been edited makes it look as though the three judges made up their minds with very little regard for the contestants' feelings. Tough game, advertising.
