Nike
"Believe In More"
2 mins
13 January 2017
UK Sportswear

This short film for Nike was conceived, created, and directed by avant-garde creative powerhouse and musician FKA Twigs. The grungy-beautiful two minute spot advertises Nike's new Spring Zonal Strength Tights, which are shown off to great effect by athletic dance moves from the likes of Olympic fencer Miles Chamley-Watson and krump dancer Saskia Horton.

Twigs also gives us a sneak peek at some of her new music, with brand new song 'Trust In Me' debuting as the soundtrack. The song links up nicely with the idea that Nike products can be, well, trusted. The 'believe in more' tagline also speaks to the slightly surreal, fantastical world presented in the film. Engaging stuff which provides a treat for the eyes and ears.

It's a vast improvement on their usual offering.

Glenfiddich
"The Experimental Series"
60s
26 Oct 2016
Space take a scientific approach for Glenfiddich here, with a sultry Scottish voiceover telling us facts about the mind accompanied by dynamic shots suggesting curiosity and creativity. 'The mind lets us play with maybe, why, and what if' - which for Glenfiddich means creating a craft beer purely to season the casks that finish off their first experimental whisky.

Arch Birds
"Be The Fastest"
2 mins 39s
23 Aug 2016
Academy Films' Seb Edwards directs this promo by London outfit Arch Birds, which came about as part of Virgin Media's series of vignettes featuring Usain Bolt. Here we see him cutting loose on the dance floor to the track and the sheer energy of both Bolt and the dancers around him is terrific. What a dude.

Shredded Wheat
"High Board"
30s
1 Aug 2016
Sun-kissed visuals and a hint of surrealism help make this a memorable piece of work for Shredded Wheat. This chap is the living embodiment of falling with style as he plummets from the swimming pool high board while on holiday. But - as Henry Blofeld's reverent VO points out - this is no mere dive... it's a man without fear, and he's ready to embrace the "great, chlorinated unknown".

Virgin Media
"9.58 Seconds"
1 min 40s
6 Jul 2016
9.58 seconds. It's arguably one of the most famous times in the world (sorry Chico Time) thanks to Usain Bolt's imperious efforts at the 2009 World Athletics Championships. As the man primes himself for another surge at glory, Michael Johnson asks, "Do you know what 9.58 seconds feels like?" Thanks to this kinetic piece of work for Virgin Media, we've got plenty of definitions to work from.

Booking.com
"Thierry Henry"
2 mins 50s
5 Jul 2016
After a cameo appearance in Booking.com's latest ad, former Arsenal and Barcelona striker Thierry Henry takes us on a trip to Rome - the site of his one and only UEFA Champions League triumph in 2009. Savouring the sights and sounds of the Italian capital while remembering his emotions on the night of the final, Henry makes for an engaging travel companion as the accommodation portal conveys its affinity for the beautiful game.

Paddy Power
"Scotland"
60s
31 May 2016
Before a ball has even been kicked, Euro 2016 has been a success story for the home nations and the Republic of Ireland... well, with one notable omission. Having fallen at the qualification hurdle, Scotland won't be scrambling to find their passports to France, but advertising court jesters Paddy Power are keen to get the Tartan Army onside in the name of "la bantz".

Short Films
"H Positive"

22 Feb 2016
Regular readers will be aware of DAVID REVIEWS's ongoing support for Glenn Paton's short film H Positive. Back when it was a gleam in Paton's eye and he launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund it, we drew attention to his hopes. As we've admitted before, we did so fairly sceptically... while admiring of his ambition, we found it hard to imagine he'd find the resources needed to bring it to the screen. And - as we've conceded before - we were underestimating him.

Lacto Free
"Revolution"
30s
25 Jan 2016
Arla previously employed hedgehogs to champion their Lacto Free range - now they have a band of revolutionaries in a monster milk float to do the deed. Talk about a change of tactics! This vigorous mob aren't out to raid palaces though - they want to inspire those on a dairy-free diet to rise as one.

England Rugby
"Balls To Stereotypes"
60s
3 Nov 2015
Sporting events such as the Rugby World Cup often seem burdened rather than emboldened by the mention of "legacy" - the lasting effects of a tournament on generations to come. England as a nation may have stumbled during the competition, but as this understated and effective film from BBH Sport shows, 2015 may yet produce an even greater achievement.

FKA twigs
"M3LL155X"
16 mins 23s
15 Aug 2015
Comprising random letters and numerals, the title of FKA Twigs' latest offering looks like a more obscure track by Aphex Twin. However, that's about as far as any comparison goes - this, er, promo runs the videos for 'Figure 8', 'I'm Your Doll', 'In Time' and 'Glass & Patron' into one continuous clip along with an additional new track 'Mothercreep'. So in actuality it's more of a full-on contemporary dance film showcasing tracks on her new EP. And as ever, Twigs doesn't shy away from controversy.

Scope
"International Kissing Day"
60s
16 Jul 2015
This unusual awareness film for Scope focuses on International Kissing Day. Couples demonstrate the loveliness of kissing in a variety of different scenarios as Antony & The Johsons warbles agreeably in the background. There's nothing here to explain how kissing and Scope join up but it's a joyous film so perhaps that doesn't really matter.

FKA twigs
"Glass and Patron"
4 mins 59s
24 Mar 2015
We know FKA twigs is rightly revered as a very talented and original artist, but at DAVID we find her music a tad inaccessible. Having said that, it's as much about her performance and ideas as it is her songs - and she can be utterly compelling to watch. This self-directed promo for her new release is a great example.

The Prince's Trust
"Learn the Hard Way"
60s
4 Feb 2015
How wonderful to be reminded by this sparkling film how important it is to look beyond the difficult circumstances that can make an individual's potential that much harder to see. Seb Edwards's film - from a script by William Cottam and James Crosby - leads us through a series of vignettes which powerfully remind us just how tough it can be when opportunities aren't served to you on a plate.

Army Recruitment
"Restoring Normal Days"
60s
18 Jan 2015
This splendid commercial is another excellent addition to a super canon of work urging young people to commit some or all of their time to the armed forces. This film depicts the British Army as the saviour of many a situation... restoring 'normal life' whenever possible. The three scenarios are beautifully filmed and each starts with a moment of tense crisis before turning into a situation that's more comfortable.

St John Ambulance
"Miscellaneous Objects"
40s
15 Jan 2015
A shift in direction for the St John Ambulance service, as previous spots have been filmed with real people. But it's a highly effective change: the very items a young child can choke on are the ones instructing us how to react, and there are some funny lines in it: "I'm a baby that chokes babies". The humour helps it remain instructive rather than terrifying, and the low-key animation of the objects is lovely.

Thinkbox
"Harvey and Harmony"
60s
11 Dec 2014
Apparently this is the last Thinkbox ad that will feature Harvey the dog as he's getting a bit long in the tooth... and what a shame that is. His placid, patient face has served as the perfect foil to the big personality that lies beneath - as his own ad-based communications have shown. It's been not only an engaging campaign but an extremely clever one and we'll be sad to see it go.

Google Glass
"FKA Twigs"
2 mins 12s
22 Oct 2014
FKA twigs has pretty much defined the blurry boundary between promo and commercial with this collaboration between herself and Glass from Google. Despite the meltdown of the traditional business model in the music industry, we've still tended to perceive the idea of an artist receiving money in exchange for the use of their work in advertising as a sell-out.

Invictus Games
"I Am Invictus"
60s
1 Sep 2014
The grunts of extreme physical exertion provide the soundtrack to this ad promoting the Invictus Games; the sports challenge for soldiers wounded in the line of duty. This simple but intelligent communication lets it dawn slowly on us what we're witnessing and gives a sense of the single-minded determination it must take to qualify.

Virgin Media
"Back of the Shed"
40s
13 Jul 2014
The problem with Usain Bolt is he's just too watchable. This lovely ad has him showing off his football skills in his modest suburban home and looking adorably cheeky, according to Mrs DAVID. But while he shoots to different people in different surroundings to demonstrate where you can get Virgin Media, it's hard to take in the message because you're too busy wondering if he is spinning that ball.

Adidas
"Unlock the Game"
60s
7 May 2014
The rivalry between Nike and Adidas continues to fascinate, and there's a huge contrast between the two companies' approach in their most recent pieces of World Cup-related advertising. Whereas Nike's effort is bristling with the brashness we've come to expect from the brand, Adidas's new film has a quiet intensity which manages to suggest they possess more gravitas than their most significant competitor.

Carphone Warehouse Talk Talk
"Winter Wonderland"
30s
3 Dec 2013
Our animated couple make their way across a festive living room to snuggle up on the sofa with their friends in this Christmassy execution of the campaign. They scurry along the mantelpiece, slide down stockings and have quite an adventure, but we all know that Talk Talk wouldn't let it end any other way than happily.

mothers2mothers
"A World Apart"
90s
26 Nov 2013
We're an island people, insular by nature; and find it hard to see far-away cultures as relevant to our own. So the idea of showing one young mother's experience as if she were British rather than sub-Saharan Africa is strikingly powerful... helping us relate to her desperation meaningfully without feeling lectured.

Talk Talk
"Nothing's Gonna Stop Us"
90s
12 Sep 2013
With more than a little nod to Toy Story, an animated astronaut goes on an odyssey in this full-length new commercial for Talk Talk. Moving across various surfaces, he makes his way to his sweetheart and together they travel to the sofa where they can take advantage of the advertised service to watch television.
