Impossible is nothing for a young photographer called Erik who describes his artistic process in this documentary made jointly by Volvo and Sky Atlantic. There is less worthiness in the subject of this documentary than in the other two films and - as if to compensate for this - directing collective DARYL have injected more visual interest. It doesn't quite distract us from Erik's self-indulgence but it's a good effort.

This really isn't helped by the fact that they've cleared used a 17 year old to dub a 12 year old.

"Maria and Josefin"

In this short but wonderfully languid documentary made by Volvo and Sky Atlantic we're introduced to Maria and Josefin who built a business out of a desire to save their local environment from the danger posed by scuttled boats sitting at the bottom of the nearby lakes. Recycling parts from the salvaged vessels is a fantastically green solution to a problem that was a long time in the making.

Volvo's fruitful relationship with Sky Atlantic continues to generate excellent work with this short documentary examining the efforts of a young engineer to improve the lives of those who have lost limbs. What's striking about this film is the optimism of both the engineer and the young amputee he's seeking to help.

Mattessons
"The Snackarchist"

7 Feb 2016
There's a touch of Napoleon Dynamite about the young man refusing to conform in this excellent commercial for Mattessons' range of meat-based snacks. Showing a healthy disrespect for authority, he flaunts every rule he can encounters... albeit often demonstrating a slightly wary level of defiance.

Every parent will have learned to dread the loss of the one stuffed animal their offspring cannot live without. It's an attachment that may seem ridiculous to non-parents or to the unsentimental but it can feel like a very real emergency when child and 'best friend' are involuntarily parted with no prospect of an immediate reunion, and this 60" film taps into that with aplomb. When 'mum' tearfully reveals that 'teddy' is part of the family, a lot of mums and dads will know exactly what she means.

A warm orb of light provides a comforting presence for those coping with terminal illness. Come daybreak, the light is revealed to be a Marie Curie nurse; there to care and support during what could have been a lonely and anxious night. It's a moving, tender portrayal of the charity's work and one that compels us to help keep the light shining for those in need.

This enjoyable ad for Richmond Sausages demonstrates the kind of stoicism only a parent can muster. Having taken care of dinner ahead of schedule, our protagonist undergoes a makeover that leaves him looking like a mix between the Joker and a glam rock frontman. Luckily, a peaceful meal with his children fortifies him... until the doorbell rings, that is.

Mattessons Sausage
"Stick or Twist"

We love this attention-grabbingly silly spot for Mattessons... not least because it puts the product proposition firmly at the forefront of the mind. A presenter in the old-school, severe manner asks us whether we think a mum should stick with her old recipe or give it a twist with the addition of some Mattessons sausage. Stick... or twist? You chose correctly. This should be one happy client.

"Wall'sie Onesie"

What a brilliant idea - onesies you can acceptably wear in public because they look like entirely different outfits. Just think of the comfort factor: there you are, dressed smartly for the office, yet all the time your generously proportioned tummy doesn't have to suffer the restriction of a belt. Lovely ad; completely nails the target audience; adore the cheeky and rather dopey-sounding VO.

"Cat and Budgie"
60s
14 Feb 2014
Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell's 1968 duet You're All I Need To Get By is delicately placed in the mouths of a cat and a budgie in the latest commercial for Freeview. Like Tony Kaye's classic ad for the Solid Fuel Advisory Service, the film makes allies of natural adversaries to (a) catch our attention with a piece of cuteness of the kind that we routinely pass on to one another via social networking and (b) subliminally underline the bonding experience of great television.

"Tadpoles"

Who'd have thought tadpoles could be so riveting? But they are. In a humble pond two little pre-frogs fall for each other, prompting their respective 'families' to have a dance-off (obviously). They've no idea a child is watching them from above, spellbound.

Boots
"Double Life"

Ooh, Miss Jones. Another 10-second spot for Boots opticians has a conservatively-dressed woman letting down her hair and taking off her glasses in a case of classic librarian stereotyping... only to see her don a different pair with which to step into her "double life". However, the change is so subtle you wonder just how different her double life can be.

A elderly swimmer announces quietly but determinedly that she's "going to keep going until she beats Gladys", presumably with the help of invigorating vitamins from Boots. It might be more impressive if Gladys didn't look about a hundred and three, but nonetheless there's a feelgood factor to this campaign which gives it a certain charm.

A grey-haired chap undergoes a transformation from Trevor to T-Dog with the help of some new specs from Boots. Unfortunately, we don't get to see what his old glasses were like so it's impossible to tell just what a difference they make to his image. For all we know, they're the same frames with a new prescription which simply allows him to see himself in a new light.

Boots
"Party Like It's 1959"
10s
3 Dec 2012
This simple, attractively-shot ad suggests that with a few vitamins from Boots, the oldies can party with the best of them this Christmas. Unfortunately, necking B2 and B12 may help with fatigue as the supers imply, but they don't seem to do much for anterograde amnesia.
