Lipton Tea

UK Tea

This charming ad for Lipton is as soothing as the hot cup of tea it advertises. To a calm acoustic soundtrack, it tells the story of an unlikely friendship as a lonely young boy and his school bus driver look out for each other.

After noticing the perpetually-late kid doesn't have any friends, the kindly driver reaches out one morning to give him a small gesture of solidarity. The fist bumps evolve into an elaborate handshake, gradually catching the attention of the entire bus even as the boy continues to sit alone.

When he presents his friend with a Christmas gift - a bauble filled with teabags - it strikes a chord with the other kids who finally invite him to sit with them. There's the briefest implication that the bus driver's husband is deceased, bringing a new meaning to her being there for another lonely soul, as the ad ends with her sipping a well-deserved cuppa.

It's an extremely moving piece of work... and, in DAVID's opinion, it's adam&eveDDB's best Christmas film this year and that's going some.

The Worlds - as they're known among athletes - are coming to London next year and, just ahead of the Rio Olympics, this super ad launching the event is letting the great British public know that it's time to get their skates on if they want a ticket. Paula Radcliffe's lonely training run through the early morning London streets is interrupted when a woman pushes past her in unlikely fashion, offering a heartfelt apology as she dashes past.

We at DAVID gripe and groan about ads with rhyming scripts - but every now and again, along comes one which we can hold up as an example of how it should be done. With its natural rhythm and delightful delivery, this spot for George at Asda demonstrates that rhymes can sound inventive and charming rather than the last resort of the uninspired.

While the French Open is well under way at Roland Garros, it's usually not until the grass court season - all Pimms, strawberries and cream, and a land mass named after the British number one - that we as a nation make a collective racket about racquets. This beautifully observed film for the Lawn Tennis Association evokes the first summer stroll on to the local tennis court to awaken our inner Andys, Rafas, and Serenas.

After a languid awakening, a woman gets herself together enough to shower, dress, and apply makeup with a sense of purpose. The peaceful silence seems strange given that she is evidently heading off somewhere as if to keep an appointment... and then all is revealed. This spot for Thomas Cook is stylishly filmed; capturing that combined sense of relaxation and anticipation you get on a good holiday.

Thomas Cook is offering children's places from 1 so if you're happy to take them on a holiday where they can recreate the end scene of Little Miss Sunshine, here's your chance to take a break without it costing a fortune or taking them during term time. At least, we presume that's the case - hard to be sure without reading all those Ts and Cs onscreen.

"Dunes Kiss"

A couple stand opposite each other awkwardly after crossing the finishing line on a beach bicycle race. Eventually they pluck up the courage to kiss. Smoochy noises aside, this low-key approach is rather sweet. 'Be impulsive', the super tells us; implying that impulsiveness isn't synonymous with recklessness - simply that it can benefit us to seize the moment.

"Pool Boy"

This sensational piece of work brings a whole new meaning to the phrase 'pool boy'. At a resort whose exclusiveness is accentuated by the strange absence of other holidaymakers, a young lad is joyously lost in his own world as he gyrates next to the swimming pool. A full minute in length, the client has bravely committed to this idea and the effect is beguiling

It's not often we say an ad is adorable... but this absolutely is. A delightful little girl, whose VO delivery is terrific, asks her mum what she wants for Christmas. Her mum isn't all that helpful, because she has everything she wants already, it turns out. But the little girl is not to be deterred, and when dad proves too easily stumped, she gets some help from the elf at the local toy shop.

In this spot for M&S uniforms, a young boy solemnly explains to us that he loves his new stain resistant blazer because even tomato ketchup comes off "aukomakickly"... however, it turns out his tangled love life may be harder to deal with. A wonderfully natural performance has been summoned out of this little lad - kudos to director Mark Albiston for this achievement.

Marks & Spencer pick a lovely way of promoting their Back to School collection by depicting a youngster joining his older sibling in secondary school. Far from being perturbed by his step up to the next level, this lad's looking forward to stepping out in the same stylish uniform worn by his big bro. There's typical bravado and messing around, but a tender fist-bump shows they'll look out for each other too.

Well, hands up who expected that to be about insurance? It's an unexpected destination, but Havas (Singapore) have crafted such an impressive and engaging journey, we're all for it. Starting knee deep in the dreariness of everyday life, the story takes a more optimistic turn and leaves you feeling like you can take that all-important first step into the unknown.

This lovely New Zealand ad is promoting McDonald's 'Skills Zone'; an online site where youngsters can teach themselves about various footie challenges and then put their know-how into practice when they play. To that end, a wonderfully-cast young lad is seen having a game with other lads as he keeps up an interior monologue.

Sky
"Next"

29 May 2014
This atmospheric spot reveals Sky as a sponsor of the next generation of Kiwi athletes. It's beautifully filmed and scripted - unobtrusive camerawork observes real athletes getting into their zone, while the spareness of the spoken phrases sums up their aims and motives with maximum economy and feeling. And what a landscape to practice in: the images of vast open lakes, traffic-free roads and lush forests could make even the most sedentary of us long to be out there exercising till we have an aneurysm.
