UK Tourist Boards

Hollywood star Luke Evans fronts the 'Year of Legends' tourism campaign for Wales, beginning with this ambitious ad filmed in Snowdonia. Amidst gorgeous scenery, the actor delivers a rhyming script about the rich history of myths and legends from his native land. While the CG work and curious soundtrack detract from the drama somewhat, the final product still feels portentous.

NHS Blood and Transplant
"Missing Type"

16 Aug 2016
A second helping of the campaign which uses missing letters to draw attention to the shortage of blood donors. Austere in tone, it makes its point very cleverly and will - we'd imagine - persuade occasional donors to step up their game. Good to see other WCRS clients backing this campaign by allowing their brand names to be used in this.

Usain Bolt brings his distinctive charisma to this Irish commercial for Digicel which celebrates all things Caribbean. A lot of energy is provided by director Hadi's clever use of close-up to increase the pace of the edits with Bolt's highly professional VO providing the glue that holds the whole thing together.

BBC Asian Network

British Asian rapper Raxstar spends two minutes waxing lyrically on the topic of British-Asianness in this attractive film for the BBC. In the press release, 101's Creative Director Augusto Sola reveals that the agency's "intention was to get a younger audience to engage with BBC Asian Network. ‘100% British, 100% Asian’ seeks to give the station greater relevance to them."

New Balance
"You Are Your Toughest Opponent "

New Balance strengthen their foothold in the UK market with this understated film profiling some of our top athletes and their most formidable adversaries: themselves. The likes of Aaron Ramsay, Joe Root, and Heather Watson reveal how looking inward has provided them with the necessary drive to succeed in their respective fields. It's a thoughtful idea and one that chimes well with the brand's ethos of constant refinement.

Royal Navy Reserves
"Wednesdays"

17 Mar 2016
More than any previous recruitment film for the reserve wings of our armed services, this portrays the visceral excitement of the time you might spend with them. But it does so with responsibility... there's no glorification of combat here. It's about taking self-fulfilment and creating an area of your life which differs from the humdrum of day-to-day living.

Marc Evans directed Visit Wales's 2014 tourism drive and he (along with cinematographer Luke Jacobs) delivers on this year's campaign. Its adventure-seeking spirit springs from impressive top-down shots of the Welsh terrain, interspersed with sequences that showing the country has plenty to offer those with energy to burn on their holidays.

Royal Navy
"Submariner"

15 Dec 2015
The final instalment in WCRS's excellent series of Royal Navy films focuses on the camaraderie recruits can experience during their stint. While this submariner admits the prospect of working with advanced technology pulled him in, it's the bonds developed with his fellow sailors that have made him stay. Another strong and persuasive piece with personal development at its heart.

"Pride"

10 Nov 2015
Another strong entry in the Royal Navy's impressive series of recruitment films employs a neat visual device to chart this young man's shift from an uncertain future to gracing the pitch at Twickenham. As with any big decision, it's the first step out the door which matters the most. That's the one that starts him on his way to a Royal Navy recruitment office, then on to aircraft carriers, foreign lands, and the home of English rugby.

Strava
"Ride With Us"

12 Jul 2015
This highly attractive film cements the already strong bond between the advertising industry and cycling... and all in the name of promoting Strava - an online community which enables bike enthusiasts to compete with each other over virtual courses. This film neatly sidesteps the recent suggestion that some of those adding their times via Strava learned their sense of fair play from Lance Armstrong by concentrating on the purity of the ride.

Sigma
"Higher (ft Labrinth)"

2 Mar 2015
Relentless hit machine Sigma has a very apt video for their new single Higher. Shot in and around Innsbruck at temperatures of -12°C in between blizzards and avalanches, the dauntless duo's guest singer stand disorientingly close to sheer drops belting out the track while skiers do all manner of impressive manoeuvres. The directors have created a very polished and confident end result - we'd love to see what else they can do.

BA gives us the poignant tale of Chitra, who moved from her native India to Canada aged twelve; and how she's flying back to see her gran to ask for her blessing as she wants to get married. It's to highlight BA's promotion of their services to the international expat community, specifically targeting second generation Indians living in North America, and will no doubt resonate with anyone whose family lives on another continent.
