Magical shapes form from the dust particles lit by a projector in this clever ad for Sky Cinema, which seeks to forge a connection between the big screens that typically dominate our living rooms and our collective affection for the experience of going to the pictures.

Add a few classic movie soundbites and you have a winning slice of nostalgia to emphasise Sky's place in our relationship with film.

It isn't clear from this commercial what the switch from Sky Movies to Sky Cinema actually signifies. Does it deliver any benefits to the broadcaster's subscribers or is it a wholly superficial change? A quick Google reveals that it's "more than just a name change" and it is... there's a raft of improvements. But none of them is sufficiently exciting to place at the centre of this communication which is probably why they've gone for this approach.

Sky has come up with another magical Christmas ad to show the immersive power of film this year... all hingeing on the humble sprout. A young girl is ordered to finish her portion of tiny toxic cabbages - but she manages to slide unnoticed under the table, sprouts in hand, and is transported to an alternative universe offering all the answers.

Warburtons
"The Deliverers"

It isn't really possible to be a 68 year old action hero unless you have a pretty good sense of humour and - throughout his acting career - Sylvester Stallone has frequently shown both a desire and an ability to produce decent comedy performances. Even so, it was a bold move by Warburtons to invite the Hollywood superstar to front their spectacular new commercial and there must have been a degree of nervousness among those paying for this extravaganza.

Sky
"Step into the Adventure"

This clever ad for Sky succeeds where so many others have failed: it gives you a real sense of immersion in the viewing experience. As a family decorates the Christmas tree, Kermit the Frog barges into the room and propels them on a Sky Movie Adventure. Essentially, they're taken through a raft of family movies before ending up back at home - but along the way, they're transformed in keeping with the movies they visit.

27 Aug 2014
Sky teams up with Disneymedia+ and Pixar again for the second Toy Story spot promoting broadband. It has all the charm you'd hope for from an ad featuring Buzz and Woody, with the usual delicious little touches highlighting the toys' naivete about technology. Consequently, wi-fi shall henceforth be known as wee-fee in the DAVID household.

"Shield"

Good old Samuel L Jackson. He does know how to put on a good show of righteous, justified dudeness. In this spot for Sky Broadband, which is a tie-in with Captain America: The Winter Soldier, he gets into character as Nick Fury and urges the crew to sign up for Sky Broadband Shield when it's discovered that online details of the soldier in question have been hacked and in their place is a website of dubious moral quality.

Pierce Brosnan patiently gives surprised fans his best smile as he pulls up at traffic lights, grins at the car park camera and nods suavely at a chap coming out of a newsagent's. It's not until someone taps him on the shoulder in the pub that he realises it wasn't him they were looking at after all.

14 Nov 2012
This lovely film for Sky Movies has a little girl explaining to her younger sister how it is possible for so many movies to be delivered to their home. Don't take notes though... we've a feeling that not every aspect of her account is entirely reliable. A thoroughly charming reminder of Sky Movies's claim to be part of Christmas.

A forthcoming series featuring John Simm, Philip Glenister, Ben Chaplin and Marc Warren suggests that Sky has raised its game to the next level when it comes to commissioning drama. The trail isn't entirely without promise but, as may prove to the case with the programme itself, it could be better.
