Rustlers
"80 Years of Torment"
60s
3 November 2016
UK Pre-Prepared Meals

The past may have been brutal, and 2016 may already look pretty grim, but at least you can have a steaming hot burger fresh from the microwave in ninety seconds. That's the message of hope in this attention-grabbing ad from Rustlers, purveyors of food to the after-pub crowd nationwide.

Director Steve Rogers takes us through time as we follow a chap across eighty years of toil and labour, running through historical events such as the Wall Street Crash, the Second World War, and peace protests in the 1960s. As he gradually ages, so his expression becomes one of exhausted resignation; culminating in a slack-jawed, thousand-yard stare that only changes when a timer indicates his burger is ready to eat.

It's a lovely tongue-in-cheek conceit. This wizened old man, who has had to roll with the punches all his life, has finally been granted his reward... and the smile at the end says it's been worth the journey.

Thanks for making me cry Patrick. Knowing the special bond between my husband and son makes this incredibly moving for me.

The exertion of Team GB is neatly matched by the craftsmanship of DFS's design team in this slick ad for the furniture retailer. After some steely-eyed contributions from both camps (with some lovely goggle work thrown in for good measure), the starter's pistol prompts these athletes and workers to do what they do best. Thanks to the lovely visuals and the pulsing soundtrack, the juxtaposition superbly conveys the brand's patriotic vim.

The Dave Clark Five's 'Glad All Over' scores this sunny commercial which sees DFS in a patriotic mood. Red, white, and blue reams of confetti erupt from chimney stacks and sofas to celebrate the furniture retailer's national recognition of quality. The visual motif also ties in nicely with the brand's sponsorship of Team GB, all the while communicating their seasonal discounts in eye-catching fashion.

"Astronaut"

After a successful visit to the International Space Station, an astronaut prepares to return from orbit to terra firma. As John Grant's 'Outer Space' plays in the background, the protagonist is strapped into his Union Jack-sporting tin can and begins a pulsating journey back into Earth's atmosphere. Equipment pulses and flames roar from the exhaust, but our hero remains calm as he hurtles towards his ultimate goal: the returning KFC Supercharger sub. Godspeed, indeed.

Jacob's Cracker Crisps
"Ride On Time"

18 Apr 2016
A trio of bridesmaids waiting for the wedding to start become distracted by a packet of the advertised snacks in this lively addition to a winning campaign. Director Gary Freedman has surpassed the considerable gusto of the previous executions and we suspect he's achieved this by urging them to show absolutely no restraint as they mime along to 'Ride on Time'.

Bonnie Tyler's 'Total Eclipse of the Heart' - Adland's karaoke staple - receives a fun airing in this ad for Jacob's Mini Cheddars. These three lads demonstrate their Lip Sync Battle credentials while the packets in their hands provide the backing vocals. Lovely piece of background work also from the mum trying and failing to get the couch choir's attention.

Jacob's Cream Crackers
"Move It"

Well, it was bound to happen eventually: Jacob's Cream Crackers have actually gone crackers themselves. Don't call the men in white coats yet though as they may just have a hit on their hands. A woman sits herself down in front of the exotic fish tank at an aquarium to enjoy a light snack- the perfect excuse for her packet of Jacob's crackers to break into an animated rendition of Reel 2 Real's 'I Like To Move It'.

Cheapflights

If there's one word you want to avoid in marketing, it has to be 'cheap'. While - in theory - it means the same as inexpensive, it carries a pejorative connotation which creates the expectation that a 'cheap' service will also be shoddy and - ironically - offer poor value for money. So it can be quite a challenge to work around the word's baggage... and this terrific commercial for Cheapflights shows exactly how to do it.

"Bears"

24 Dec 2015
A softly sung version of Cyndi Lauper's 'True Colors' accompanies a sequence depicting a family of bears who are more than ready for a holiday. Daddy bear - in particular - looks like he might go postal if he isn't given a break and the commuter who glares angrily at him doesn't appear to realise how far he's pushing his luck.

This is a super way of conveying the idea that you're spoilt for choice when you have a subscription to Sky Movies. A whole series of short vignettes show families getting ready to watch a film together... the genres are varied and so are the scenarios but the common thread - as you might expect - is Sky Movies because they'll be providing the content.

It's fifty years since Colonel Sanders began peddling chicken in the UK and BBH have put together a lovely commercial celebrating half a century of bringing families together with a tender tale of a boy adjusting to his adoptive parents. Director Ben Liam Jones has injected this with a really light touch - witness the body language of the anxious dad welcoming his son into his new home - and complete sensitivity.

DFS
"Sport"

There's tension across the faces of the people who sit on furniture purchased from the advertised retailer in this ad which shows people watching sport on television. There's still a lot of sport to come this year - what with the Olympics an' all - but you'd have thought DFS might have wanted to get this one on air before the European Championships.

Cute happenings in the living room where children play gleefully on furniture provided by the advertised retailer. If DFS's advertising continues along these lines, DAVID is going to have to select a different whipping boy to represent 'lowest common denominator' advertising.

It's the turn of the grown-ups to mess around in the latest in the much improved series for the furniture chain whose advertising heritage belongs in a chamber of horrors. A series of practical jokes and other displays of childish fun are used by adults to amuse friends and family.

Another decent DFS ad - that's quite a run now and we're wondering if this was foretold in the Book of Revelations. By focusing on children playing around the furniture, this commercial managers to convey the idea that DFS's wares will become an integral part of your home without shouting about half price deals. Excellent stuff.

Another helping of domestic bliss in many different forms. Like the recent B & Q ad, this commercial manages to capture the essence of the enduring love enjoyed by the best among us. In this execution, this is depicted through the tolerance of the little foibles that can destabilise relationships founded on something other than love.

This attractively filmed-piece for the much maligned furniture retailer is actually pretty good. Children play appealingly on the furniture available from the store before a male voiceover calmly explains how we can save money by choosing to shop at DFS.

Somewhere beneath all the supers there's quite an attractive film showing people enjoying a firework display. This film reveals that the bank is offering a prize draw that will enable some lucky punters to receive a massive cash bonus for doing bugger all... wonder where they got that idea from.
