Thomson Holidays

UK Holiday Companies

This impressively-shot ad for Thomson Holidays captures the feeling of never wanting your holiday to end. A little girl has all the time in the world as she wanders through a beach resort in dream-like stasis.

From exotic birds taking flight to a towel mid-flutter, she explores the little moments we might otherwise miss. While life at a slower pace has its charm, dad’s waiting in the pool with open arms. Now that’s a leap to remember.

It’s an attractive send-off for Thomson as we know it. The holiday company becomes TUI in the new year - a bold move considering the Thomson name’s heritage in this sector. For now, this is a warm and stylish invitation to holidaymakers looking forward to losing themselves in the moment.

It's not often we say an ad is adorable... but this absolutely is. A delightful little girl, whose VO delivery is terrific, asks her mum what she wants for Christmas. Her mum isn't all that helpful, because she has everything she wants already, it turns out. But the little girl is not to be deterred, and when dad proves too easily stumped, she gets some help from the elf at the local toy shop.

Emirates
"Jennifer Aniston's Nightmare"

Rival airlines Etihad and Emirates both have a world-famous actor fronting their brands now. While Nicole Kidman stands for the rather insane level of elitist luxury that Etihad customers expect as standard, Jennifer Aniston is altogether more human in her role as spokesperson for Emirates and plays it for laughs. It's interesting to see there's quite a substantial difference between the creative approaches given the overall similarity of the airlines themselves.

In this spot for M&S uniforms, a young boy solemnly explains to us that he loves his new stain resistant blazer because even tomato ketchup comes off "aukomakickly"... however, it turns out his tangled love life may be harder to deal with. A wonderfully natural performance has been summoned out of this little lad - kudos to director Mark Albiston for this achievement.

Marks & Spencer pick a lovely way of promoting their Back to School collection by depicting a youngster joining his older sibling in secondary school. Far from being perturbed by his step up to the next level, this lad's looking forward to stepping out in the same stylish uniform worn by his big bro. There's typical bravado and messing around, but a tender fist-bump shows they'll look out for each other too.

Marks & Spencer enlist the retro charm of Manfred Mann and 5-4-3-2-1 to promote their exclusive summer fashion bonanza. Bold colours and zippy editing catches the eye in a manner that can so often elude M&S' competitors, and it's encouraging to discover from the recent financial news that this approach is finally paying off.

Royal British Legion

Is DAVID alone in thinking the anniversary of the start of World War I has been badly mishandled? Perhaps it's because the events marking the centenary began in January - but there doesn't seem to have been the right level of gravitas in most of the coverage. This film for the Royal British legion offers a glimpse of how it ought to have been done. Infused with a dignified sombreness, it reminds us of the human tragedy that started to unfold a hundred years ago.

Another helping from this charming campaign which advertises the M & S range of schoolwear. In this execution, a boy tries to intimidate his young friend by telling how he plans to be bigger than him one day. When pushed for reasons, he falls back on "I just do", because sometimes we just can't explain our innermost desires.

What a truly delightful ad this is. The most engaging little girl - what a casting find - takes real delight in telling us how she can now dress herself and doesn't need mummy's help any longer. Her voice constantly rises up in a squeal of excitement and wonder as she's telling us, as if to say 'I know! I wouldn't believe it either!'

This arresting piece has people - from young to adult - hurling abusive words at each other, one following on from the next like some hate-inspired tag team. It's reminiscent of a potent scene in the film Fallen, where a malevolent spirit passes from person to person as they brush against each other on a busy street. There is a primitive human inclination to make others endure what one has suffered oneself, and this demonstrates it's not an acceptable path to take.

Unless we're much mistaken, this is footage of the creative department at one of the Shoreditch agencies 'working' on a brief in their ultra modern 'ironic' offices (formerly an NCP car park). Actually, come to think of it, maybe not... they're a little long in the tooth.

Three acrobatic lads sneak into a bull ring arena and tease one of the animals with a football. They leap over the charging bull in a dramatically dangerous fashion and even appear to come unstuck a few times but it's hard to tell because of the guerilla-style photography.

This excellent Nike spoof has so many cul-de-sacs as it journeys through a first person look at an amateur footballer's life that you start to wonder what its message will be. And just when you become convinced that it's a warning about excess, it surprises you.

Do you get the feeling a load of expensive cameras have just fallen off the back of a lorry in Dean Street? Ad after ad features close ups and slow motion photography only possible with the very latest kit. This ad for Samsung is pretty classy but doesn't the camera-work make the camera on offer look pretty ordinary?

A beautiful idea which has been beautifully made in this campaign which quietly throws up more excellent commercials than just about any other. Here, a succession of children tell their parents they are 'fired' because they have been neglected in favour of work. One Dad teetering on the brink redeems himself.

Possibly the most charming of this series yet and certainly the first one that's made DAVID wish he was there. The intrepid travellers with the camcorder are making their way through the Andes where they encounter llamas and take a swim in a beautiful looking bay.

Another look at the round the world trip being facilitated by Mastercard. Here, our intrepid travllers are making their way through Asia where they pause to cavort with a snake charmer, hang out with some monks and buy a suit for buttons (which are then presumably used to help make another suit).

What looks to be the start of a new series for MasterCard will follow the progress of some people travelling around the World. They are learning and taking part in as many local customs as they can. The use of a camcorder is a perfect fit and the sense of discovery palpable. Good stuff.

Nestlé Cheerios
"Every Last One"

Cute family scenes for Cheerios as we see how everyone likes to make sure they finish every last one of the circular breakfast cereal pieces. Even a schoolboy of the age normally stereotyped as sullen cannot help but smile when his Mum points out he has one stuck to the corner of his mouth.

Tear-jerker from MasterCard which relies on the utter simplicity of people being reunited at Christmas time and managing to claim a bit of the credit for the comings together by suggesting the plane fares were bought with a MasterCard. But it's not as if they actually pay.
