Highways England
"Rain"
60s

UK Charities

Highways England is urging drivers to slow down in rainy conditions after recent statistics revealed that almost 3,000 people were killed or seriously injured in wet weather accidents last year.

This beautifully-shot ad makes its point gracefully as rain begins to pour inside a strangely empty house, soaking the belongings left behind by children on a busy morning.

The lingering shots of everyday objects tell us something about the family living there - abandoned toys, school achievements on the fridge, and finally photos.

The sounds of an emergency dispatch about a family involved in a serious accident are heard as we finally see the family and it becomes apparent why the house is empty. This is an emotional film which gets its message across without much drama but with a great deal of impact.

Surely this deserves 5 stars? Especially if the Cadburys 'Lights' spot is deemed worth of 5??

Highways England is urging drivers to slow down in rainy conditions after recent statistics revealed that almost 3,000 people were killed or seriously injured in wet weather accidents last year. This beautifully-shot ad makes its point gracefully as rain begins to pour inside a house, soaking the remains of a busy morning that's been mysteriously abandoned.

Maltesers
"Dance Floor"

The third of the three excellent commercial for Maltesers which won £1 million of free airtime on Channel 4 has a woman in a wheelchair describing a mishap on the dance floor at a wedding. It didn't end badly for her though... she managed to pull the best man. Another enlightening instalment.

"Theo's Dog"

6 Sep 2016
Another helping of funny and rude from the campaign for Maltesers which was selected by Channel 4 to champion diversity. In this execution - which is told in sign language - we learn how a hearing aid was swallowed by a dog and the only prospect of its return lies in filtering the pet's excrement. None of this is explicit but it doesn't take much to read between the lines.

It's sometimes said that the Marx Brothers got away with their most risqué gags because the censors didn't understand the innuendo and we have to wonder whether something similar happened here - as we can't quite believe a gag as rude as this has made it onto our screens. We're bloody glad it has though, as it's a perfect way of reminding a general audience that you don't have to be able-bodied to have a wicked sense of humour.

Those who are always ready for a game of hide-and-seek will appreciate this online Maltesers tale featuring the vocal talents of comedian Andi Osho. For Osho, kids are very much a mixed bag - especially when your nephew neglects his duty as seeker for the afternoon. The animation has a spontaneous feel to it which complements Osho's chirpy turn as raconteur.

Maltesers present another amusing tale from their selection of animated shorts designed to be shared for an online giggle. This time, it's stand-up comedian Lou Sanders on narration duty as he describes how an office prank involving dog pictures and a photocopier leads her colleague Colin to reveal he's far from a captain of industry.

Dedicated proponents of frivolity that they are, Maltesers have now launched a series of online shorts designed to keep the mood light-hearted on social media. This first instalment sees comedian Lucy Beaumont relate a blush-making encounter in a London boutique while charming animation brings her story to life with the chocolate brand's signature levity.

Known here at DAVID HQ as "the campaign that keeps on giving" for very good reason, Lotto's superb series of celebrity caricatures returns with serial balladeer and thoroughly nice chap James Blunt outlining his jackpot masterplan: to make everyone feel beautiful by appearing in their mirrors.

We've now seen The National Lottery's Katie Price 'KTV' channel in various guises since it launched last summer, but the concept manages to lend itself well to the bumper format. With each ad break for Britain's Got Talent, we get a glimpse at what a Katie Price-laden schedule would look like, including sports reporting that makes Alan Partridge look a broadcast heavyweight.

EDF Energy
"Alarm Clock"

4 Nov 2015
Another 10" ad starring the cuddliest flame in existence raises our awareness of EDF's commitment to nuclear electricity. It seems Zingy is rather partial to a blast of Loggins and Messina in the morning as 'Wake Up Little Suzie' gets him off to a bouncy start. Sadly, one weary hit of the snooze button puts an end to his fun for a few minutes. How rude.

EDF Energy
"Microwave"
10s
1 Nov 2015
In this ten-second spot for EDF, Zingy is transfixed by the microwave as an 80s power rock track belts out. However, the 'ping' heralds an abrupt and untimely end to his reverie as a human hand reaches in and takes out a (rather unappealing-looking) baked potato. The VO at the end tells us something about nuclear electricity, but all we can absorb is the sight of Zingy emerging woozily from a bowl of fruit.

Mars Celebrations
"Christmas Tree"
30s
1 Nov 2015
The Christmas tree ornaments cannot resist the lure of Mars Celebrations sat beneath them so they get themselves organised in this charming Yuletide film. It's the fabulous detail provided by directors Dom & Nic that really brings this to life... when the heroic quintet are interrupted, you can feel them trying to hold everything together and the tension is palpable.

As with the previous executions, the broadcast version of the new National Lottery film gives us a taste of what's in store if we watch the extended version. Vinnie Jones wants to spend his lottery windfall on a plan to channel everyone's anger into a new energy source and this lovely piece of tomfoolery explains how he's going to do it.

This is the campaign that keeps on giving. It's not often these days that agencies carry on delivering on a promising conceit but you have to hand it to AMV: the second wave of 'please don't let it be them' is every bit as good as the first. Much of the credit for that belongs to director Jeff Low who has coaxed wonderful pieces of self-deprecation from the subjects of these films.

"Noel Edmonds"

Another fine helping of fun courtesy of the excellent new campaign for the National Lottery. This time Noel Edmonds sends up his own image with a greedy plan to cash in on his association with the concept of the 'house party'. Given some of Edmonds's strange political views, this could have been a whole lot darker!

"Stay Cool"

Zingy's back - and interestingly, he's not celebrating being warm thanks to low bills this autumn... he's enjoying the cooling qualities of a well-chilled fridge. While it's a different angle, it doesn't feel quite right for the time of year. Or, indeed, for Britain full stop - we're not in the Med, you know. We suspect it's to help bolster awareness of the Blue Price Promise - but perhaps EDF should have simply gone for something a little hotter on the colour chart.

"Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen"

AMV and Biscuit's Jeff Low have saved the best until last. Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen (LLB) leaves Piers Morgan and Katie Price trailing in his wake as he mercilessly sends himself up on behalf of the National Lottery. Laurence Llewelyn Bowen's comedy version of himself - on the other hand - is merely him with the volume turned up to eleven.

"Piers Morgan (Extended Version)"

7 Jul 2015
The extended version of The National Lottery spot featuring Piers Morgan, is - it has to be said - even better than the broadcast spot. Much as we hate to admit it, he plays the part frighteningly well, and the various scenarios bear the weight of additional time without sagging in the slightest - all of which goes to show how strong a piece of work this is.

7 Jul 2015
Another entertaining ad for The National Lottery focuses on fame-hungry Katie Price, and the dreams she plans to realise on scooping a massive prize. Hats off again to Jeff Low for evidently putting her at ease enough to enjoy running with the gag... she proves herself very game, and her limitations - both acting and expression-wise - are key to the fun.

"Piers Morgan"

5 Jul 2015
Piers Morgan trades on his reputation in this clever ad for the National Lottery which suggests his egotism would know no bounds if he were to win a big prize. The idea that we should buy a ticket to make that less likely isn't mathematically sound but is nonetheless persuasive as surely we would all do anything to stop the former newspaper editor from pushing ahead with the tongue-in-cheek plans he outlines in this commercial.

Agency Abbott Mead Vickers BBDO and director Nicolas Jack Davies take the Open University's courses and show how they can reveal untapped potential in a diverse variety of people. The dedication required is not lost here as the protagonists study in bed, fall asleep under a blanket of notes, and try to manage the work/life balance as best they can.

There has long been a rumour that Sainsbury's Christmas commercial was going to be a bit special... and when it was shown for the first time - halfway through Coronation Street last night - it didn't disappoint. The supermarket backed AMV to the hilt and they, in turn, provided director Ringan Ledwidge with the canvas and the tools to create a masterpiece and he has rewarded their faith with a truly stupendous piece of work.

A lovely idea - children representing leaders at the G8 summit discussing the inequality of world food distribution. Unable to reach a solution, they break for lunch.. which reveals a surprise for them all. This could have been an excellent piece, but our young actors are just a tad too stilted, and the analogy is just a little too simplistic.

This film for Cancer Research may not have the impact of the minute-long challenge to the disease issued by its predecessor but it's exceptionally good nonetheless. What better way of bringing home the improvement in leukaemia survival rates than showing children at play.

This is a spectacularly good piece of communication. Eschewing the usual images of human suffering, relief, sorrow and joy; this film focuses instead on the battle in the laboratory to defeat cancer. It's an astonishingly powerful and positive message and one that seems likely to persuade people to contribute to the cause.
