UK Lotteries / Pools

This animated Lotto film pays tribute to those who've added to the game's charitable fund in 2016. The ad demonstrates how Lotto funding has aided urban restoration, community projects, and UK athletes. So even if the odds of us winning the jackpot are longer than ever before, at least someone's benefiting from our weekly stakes.

"Brothers"

22 Nov 2016
AMV BBDO have managed to capture the warmth and togetherness of the holiday season without succumbing to schmaltz in this touching ad for the HP Spectre x360. The bond between siblings is strained as one - who is deaf - cannot share in the other's passion for music. Seeing his brother struggle, the musician decides something must be done.

Currys PC World
"Christmas Lights"

3 Nov 2016
One of two droll Christmas ads from Currys PC World showing how far we’ll go to draw attention to the items on our festive wishlist. In this, a family gathers round as dad prepares to switch on the Christmas lights. He’s delighted with his handiwork, but their excitement quickly fades when they see the lights pointing to next door’s living room - and the LG 4K Oled television within. Oh, and one very confused neighbour into the bargain.

After last year’s excellent ‘Spare The Act’ series starring Jeff Goldblum, Currys PC World have some, well, act to follow. However, AMV BBDO and Outsider’s James Rouse have proved themselves to be up to the challenge with two wry ads. We join this school’s nativity as the Three Kings arrive on the scene. We all know how the story goes, right? “The gifts the wise men presented were gold, frankincense, and… oversized silver headphones?”

Whiskas

23 Oct 2016
Whiskas continue to celebrate curiosity in this amusing ad which features a cat who hasn't quite figured out that hairbrushes are nigh on unkillable. Julian Barratt's voiceover brings the kitty's inner monologue to life, as he stalks and pounces on his unsuspecting, spiny prey - only to be distracted by the sound of much more edible food being opened.

Cat owners will be familiar with the inner monologue of the kitty in Whiskas' new ad. While he thinks of himself as a calculating, ruthless hunter stalking his prey with satisfaction, the opening of a Whiskas packet reveals him as a domestic cat watching a dripping tap. This is a fun exploration of the curiosity of cats... in a non-lethal sense.

Do the newly minted receive a pamphlet entitled: "How To Be A Multi-Millionaire"? For example, changing a light bulb's one thing, but how about a priceless chandelier? Like 'first world problems' gone mad, this amusing ad for the National Lottery Euromillions highlights the minor foibles that can accompany a jackpot win.

National Lottery Euromillions
"Parking"
30s
8 Sep 2016
One of two entertaining ads from the National Lottery Euromillions showing that the transition to multi-millionaire can be tricky for some. In this instance, parking a luxury yacht in the marina proves to be far more difficult than nabbing a space at the supermarket car park. Lovely back and forth work from the couple encountering one of the pitfalls of being stinking rich.

Sheba
"Resistance is Futile"

17 Aug 2016
Superb 60-second ads are a pleasure... but when a spot manages to be absolutely note-perfect in just 30", we get an extra frisson of delight. So what better way to start the week than with this simple but brilliantly executed ad for Sheba? A man in the throes of a passionate encounter is rendered helpless by the telepathic commands of his cat - and whether you love these feline dictators or not, it's impossible not to laugh at this scenario.

Lotto
"James Blunt"

16 Jun 2016
Known here at DAVID HQ as "the campaign that keeps on giving" for very good reason, Lotto's superb series of celebrity caricatures returns with serial balladeer and thoroughly nice chap James Blunt outlining his jackpot masterplan: to make everyone feel beautiful by appearing in their mirrors.

Cesar
"Road Trip"
90s
2 Jun 2016
This attractively-shot ad for Cesar depicts a woman making her getaway from an ugly situation. All she has is her car, a few possessions, and most important of all, her faithful Westie. In an affectionate sequence, we see the woman and her dog hit the open road without a destination in mind. They frequent parking lots, diners, and any motel amenable enough to pets.

Smart Energy GB
"Wedding Dress Fitting"
70s
6 May 2016
There's some lovely business going on in this 'Estimation Nation' ad for Smart Energy GB set in a bridal shop. With nary a tape measure in sight, this dress consultant uses every nebulous unit of measurement imaginable - including the bride-to-be's age - to cobble together the roughest of size guides. Two engaging performances combine to convey the energy campaign's message in enjoyable fashion.

Smart Energy GB
"Marathon"
60s
3 May 2016
More ballpark ineptitude from Smart Energy GB's 'Estimation Nation' series as a recognisable race official provides less than triumphant service to a marathon runner. Having just run 26.2 miles, it would be a monolithic gyp not to be given an accurate time. The campaign continues to extol the benefits of going smart with our energy with wry humour and engaging scenarios.

Currys PC World
"Whatever It Takes"

The doddery mother-in-law is a well-trodden meme, but Currys PC World have found a way of giving an old joke a bit of extra spirit. A chap marvels at the fact a particular Samsung Curve TV displays over a billion colours, and attempts to persuade his wife that they should buy one. Of course, to make a purchase like that worthwhile, it makes sense to ensure it's in a room that can accommodate it and he has eyes on granny's.

A further strong entry into Smart Energy GB's 'Estimation Nation' series features another occupation where guesswork is ill-advised. While this quack is satisfied by his unorthodox methods, the same can't be said for his patient who prefers a more precise approach... and when it's a squirrel-related injury, who can blame him? A humorous yet effective communication explaining why we shouldn't accept estimates when it comes to energy bills.

20 Apr 2016
Still buoyed by the success of their Christmas campaign starring Jeff Goldblum, Currys PC World return to our screens with an entertaining series of bumpers promoting their sponsorship of Channel 5's The Gadget Show. Each vignette features someone who could probably do with a healthy dose of tech to get the day back on track.

We've now seen The National Lottery's Katie Price 'KTV' channel in various guises since it launched last summer, but the concept manages to lend itself well to the bumper format. With each ad break for Britain's Got Talent, we get a glimpse at what a Katie Price-laden schedule would look like, including sports reporting that makes Alan Partridge look a broadcast heavyweight.

As 'Monty Python's Life of Brian' so memorably showed us, stifling one's amusement at a verbal quirk can be a trial. This man's chances of holding it together lessen with each suggestive pronunciation of the word "banking" by a French finance expert. Hardly helpful for his career prospects, but playing a National Lottery GameStore scratchcard on his phone at least offers a one in four chance of success.

National Lottery GameStore

The reputation of IT departments won't be enhanced any time soon by this wry little number. The pc user ringing for help has more chance of winning with the National Lottery Gamestore than seeing the tech guy appear in her office - a one in four chance, to be precise. Love the moment at the end, too, with her British restraint allowing her no more than a Paddington stare as he joins her at the bus stop.

National Lottery GameStore
"Bankers In Need"
20s
16 Feb 2016
Another humorous ad for National Lottery GameStore depicts a charity mugger (or 'chugger', to use the technical term) facing an uphill struggle when canvassing for donations. Who would've thought sympathy for the bankers was in such short supply, eh? Back in her civvies, this woman's chances of success seem more favourable with a scratchcard. Just don't try asking for a moment of her time.

National Lottery GameStore
"Farmer"
20s
16 Feb 2016
This agreeably silly commercial for the National Lottery's line of GameStore amusements has an off-screen man asking a couple of women if they fancy being shown around a farmer's market. Sadly, the voice belongs to a cow farmer with his arm occupied where the sun don't shine. Their interest quickly dissipates and his chances meet a pile of manure. Never mind, though - he's got a one-in-four chance with a Lotto app game.

Road Safety

10 Dec 2015
This latest road safety film features Malcolm; another individual left isolated and chastised by those around him. His promising career trajectory has taken a dive and he's left photocopying the day away. Why? All because he refused to have a drink. The ad shrewdly highlights the effect that peer pressure can have at this time of the year.

Road Safety
"Doghouse"
60s
1 Dec 2015
This public information film features Brendan. Brendan is in the doghouse. Why? No, not because he recklessly decided to drive after a drink. It's because he didn't... leaving his missus, Sandra, to walk home from the train station in torrential rain. As you can see, Sandra is not best pleased. What makes it such a powerful message is that it looks at the consequences of such a choice and legitimises the drinker's refusal to get behind the wheel.

Sainsbury's
"Mog's Christmas Calamity"
3 mins 20s
12 Nov 2015
Sainsbury's Christmas commercial always comes later than the others because of the supermarket's respectful decision to defer their seasonal marketing until after Armistice Day. And for the third year running, it's been worth the wait... John Lewis's offering continues to attract the most attention but Sainsbury's is running them a close second these days and this spectacular commercial featuring Judith Kerr's much-loved Mog the Cat edges them ever closer.

Currys PC World
"Secret Santa"

5 Nov 2015
In this wry spot for Currys PC World, Jeff Goldblum gives some unsolicited advice to Russ, the employee at the office party who's already on "thin ice". Explaining the etiquette of Secret Santa, he encourages the hapless young man to think of the "naff" slogan mug his boss has given him as something that's actually cool - like a Google Chromecast device. But Russ is a bit slow on the uptake...
