UK Holiday Companies

Characteristic stuff from Virgin Holidays: bright, bold, and set to an energising soundtrack sure to grab viewers' attention. Thrilled with their cheap holidays, a crowd of people run into the ocean and frolic with colourful inflatables in celebration of Virgin's latest sale. Cutting to a pair of divers and muffling the music momentarily is a nice touch.

Those behind this Virgin Holidays ad which was broadcast live on ITV made an astute decision when they offered everyone who supported it on social media the opportunity to win a holiday in an exotic location. This is because it guaranteed a stream of positivity on Twitter for the relevant hashtag rather than the usual mixture of sarcasm and cynicism.

Mars Bars
"Sea of Support"
90s
13 May 2016
Every even-numbered year affords a new shot at glory for the England football team. Alas, each tournament also affords fans new ways to experience heartache as if it's a national pastime. With Euro 2016 just a few weeks away from kick off, however, Mars extol the power of belief in this amusing Channel crossing.

Currys PC World
"Secret Santa"
60s
5 Nov 2015
In this wry spot for Currys PC World, Jeff Goldblum gives some unsolicited advice to Russ, the employee at the office party who's already on "thin ice". Explaining the etiquette of Secret Santa, he encourages the hapless young man to think of the "naff" slogan mug his boss has given him as something that's actually cool - like a Google Chromecast device. But Russ is a bit slow on the uptake...

Easy charm and a beautiful head of hair aren't enough to save this chap's unsuccessful attempt at a Christmas dinner, but Jeff Goldblum ensures his family react with a little more encouragement... even if he can't act his way through a mouthful. Comedic brilliance, but judging by these outtakes, it's a Christmas miracle they managed to get all five of these ads done in time for November!

Currys PC World
"Talc Powder"

Such is the quality of Currys PC World's Christmas campaign, we're almost hoping to receive at least one clunker of a gift this year if it means Jeff Goldblum suddenly materializes next to us. Next to receive some pointers is a man who's less than enthused by his partner's gift - peppermint-scented talc powder (we've looked it up and it's a real thing). As ever, Jeff is on hand to help turn that frown upside down...

Currys PC World's terrific Christmas campaign centres on the moments of strained enthusiasm we radiate when our nearest and dearest don't quite provide the Christmas of our dreams. What if we had someone to help coach us in the art of improving our 'bad gift' face? That's where Jeff Goldblum comes in.

The beauty of this whole campaign for Currys PC World is the way that at first we have no real idea where they're going. The cast look just as surprised as we are to see Goldblum's deus ex machina breeze into their homes and give them strangely intimate lessons on how to act when the gift received isn't from Currys PC World. Genius.

Road Safety
"If You Could See"
30s
29 Oct 2015
The scanner technique used to such arresting effect in last year's Road Safety film receives another outing with this ad highlighting the dangers of country roads. The colour is drained to give a starker, more atmospheric feel, and the stakes remain just as high - without the ability to see through the environment, it's up to our judgement as drivers to avoid potential tragedies.

Federal Express

Pepper sauce that ages like wine? We'll have some of that, thanks. This lovely ad for FedEx focuses on the story of Llewellyn, who wants his own take on the fiery condiment to be enjoyed all over the world. As such, we see him using the courier service to convey his sauce from the Jamaican island of Nevis where he lives to far-flung climes... and the reactions of the people who sample it.

Coastguard
"Fraserburgh Beach"
57s
23 Oct 2014
This excellent public information film very effectively brings home the fact that weather conditions on our coastlines can change rapidly - indeed, in seconds. Contrasting imagery of a calm, sunny day on Fraserburgh Beach with a frantic recorded call from the same location days earlier, it really does make us think twice about paying better heed to the nature of the sea.

Road Safety
"Country Roads"

Using an extremely diverting technique, viewers are able to imagine a world of semi-transparency where there is no danger lurking around the corner because you can see what's coming. It's like seeing an architectural drawing brought to life, and you're so drawn in by the way it looks that by the time of the inevitable collision you're paying maximum attention.

Eurostar
"Maybe"
90s
20 Oct 2013
The tantalising promise of a trip across the English Channel is used to entice punters onto the trains of Eurostar in this lovely compendium of images created by HLA's Simon Ratigan. It was brave to imply that not everything we'll find on the continent will be entirely to our taste (these, after all, are countries where you don't have to commit fraud to persuade people to eat horse meat).

National Lottery Euromillions
"Blockbuster"
30s
26 Jul 2013
Buy a Euro Millions lottery ticket and you might win yourself a celebrity lifestyle. That means eating incinerated food, driving a car with no roof, owning what looks like a deluxe Tesco Extra and learning to live with saddle sores. Oh, and let's not forget the paranoia that comes from suspecting everyone's laughing at you behind your back.

Cancer Research
"Playground"
30s
3 Jan 2013
This film for Cancer Research may not have the impact of the minute-long challenge to the disease issued by its predecessor but it's exceptionally good nonetheless. What better way of bringing home the improvement in leukaemia survival rates than showing children at play.

BlackBerry
"Listen With Friends"
20s
2 Jun 2012
The latest effort to market the BlackBerry as a cool phone demonstrates that the device can be used to listen to music with your friends. Strangely, this has the net effect of making one chaps actual friends walk away from him and leaving him alone with his virtual friends. You're never alone with a BlackBerry... except that you are.

BlackBerry
"Those Who Do"
60s
15 May 2012
Blackberry attempts to equate its gadget with people who do in this commercial which takes a sly dig at the 'sheep' who use touch screen phones. It's a neatly put together piece of work but it's hard to believe that insulting punters who've switched away from your device is going to yield positive results.

National Lottery Scratchcards
"More Big Numbers"
20s
10 Apr 2011
Giant numbers appear on the landscape to illustrate the news that a bingo-based scratch card has returned to your nearest newsagent. The existence of these games always feels like the seedier side of the National Lottery proposition and the advertising appears to reflect that.

Pepsi Max
"Max It Legends"

A rather strange concoction for Pepsi Max focuses on three cheesy characters who, we are assured, are the 'Max It Legends'. If you are sufficiently intrigued then you can check out the associated web site and perhaps everything will then make sense.

Walkers

Football's World Cup collides with It's A Knockout as Stuart Hall's infectious enthusiasm invades this commercial for some specially themed crisps. Gary Lineker makes off with some of the crisps while dressed as a pearly king.

Stuart Hall and Gary Lineker are joined by an array of minor celebrities in this ad which introduces special World Cup flavours. Hall turned 80 at the end of last year but anyone who doesn't listen to his football reports on Five Live might not know he's a national treasure.

"Musical Chairs"

During a dull workplace presentation, a man suddenly suggests they "pump this party"... the room is filled with dance music and everyone shows off their moves. It's a highly amusing way of representing the idea that scratchcards can "put some play in your day".
