Fans of old school technology will be pinching themselves just now. As the Nokia 3310 enjoys its second coming, Windows 95 is back too. Well, sort of. Designer shoewear brand Camilla Elphick pays tribute to the venerable operating system in this frenetic ad.
They may be promoting their spring-summer 2017 collection, but we’re slap bang in the era of Minesweeper, Internet Explorer, and heartbreak over MSN---sorry, Chit Chat Messenger. As Venus and David’s relationship dissipates, the computer suffers its own fatal errors.
Soon the screen is a feverish mass of computer viruses, mutated Solitaire, and - as a treat for ‘Clueless’ fans - a dancing Paul Rudd. Even the warning messages have a dark, existential tone: “Your hopes and dreams are incompatible with reality”.
It’s a skilfully rendered nostalgia hit. It’s worth hitting pause to appreciate the layers of background text and exotic icons. Subsequent operating systems may be slicker, but the brand should hook its target audience with this playful reboot. Still, it looks like they need all the anti-virus software they can muster.
