Marika Hackman’s ‘Boyfriend’ receives a wry promo courtesy of Libby Wilde Burke. We watch an all-male band begin their set. They’ve got it all: sleeve tattoos, leather jackets, and well-managed manes… if only their instruments were plugged in.

It’s a witty commentary on rock music’s male-centric reputation. While the crowd automatically sways to these faux-rockers, Hackman and backing band The Big Moon bring the noise upstairs.

The track’s breezy sounds belie Hackman’s roguish spirit. Her lyrics are laced with sly observations on sexual stereotypes - “He knows a woman needs a man to make her shout” - and mind games: “I held his world in my hands/I threw it out to see where it would land.”

Like her punchy video for ‘Little Something’ by The Amazons, Burke lets Hackman and co.’s performance reverberate. We’re left in no doubt as to their technical prowess, while close-ups of Hackman’s playful snarl shows she’s having serious fun.
