UK Phone Retailers

Amazing what technology can do these days, innit? A woman goes into a phone shop and cautiously agrees with the salesman that the model he's showing her is a good choice. "It'll still be good in a couple of years," he tells her - and to prove his point, he takes her out the back - so to speak - and on a journey to the future.

Their mode of transport is, reminiscent of the famous film, a modified car - and once strapped in, they zoom off and arrive at a glamorous destination where everything is revolving around her and her little bichon frise.

She catches sight of a deliciously funny billboard that explains everything (well, to an extent) and yes, she's still using her phone.

The absurdity of the conceit is terrific, and all the stops have been pulled out to emphasise that the model is so good, you won't want to upgrade after 24 months even if you have the world at your fingertips.

In all, it's a lovely spot and as she breathlessly decides to take the phone, you finding yourself nodding at her in encouragement because Phones 4 U must most definitely be the go-to store. You can't ask more from an ad than that.

"Next Door Neighbours"
30s
21 Dec 2013
This serves more as a salutary warning about who to give Christmas presents to than the goodwill you'll receive as a result. Having offered a free X-Box to the neighbours, Sam and Ellie get more than they bargained for in return - maybe not a tangible gift in itself, but the gift of friendship where friendship is more of a burden than a joy.

"Rory"

25 Nov 2013
An atypical display of generosity towards a co-worker leaves hapless Rory backed into a corner. Yes, it's those pesky freebies from Phones 4 U again; causing havoc because they're good enough to pass off as a thoughtful gift. Hannah certainly thinks so... and she thinks her luck's in.

"Aunt"

18 Nov 2013
Again, one of those where casting is everything. David Mitchell informs us that Tom forgot to buy his auntie a Christmas present as we witness the awkward silence between them. But this year he makes up for it with help from Phones 4 U. Auntie is delighted. Tom's face is a picture. Lovely.

Phones 4 U
"Dog Groomer"

5 Nov 2013
Poor Lucy gets more than she bargains for by being more generous with her Christmas gifts than she was the year before thanks to Phones 4 U. However, it doesn't exactly work in her favour as her dog stylist unleashes hell on her unsuspecting pooch. A VO sounding like David Mitchell having a disappointing day explains the sorry tale.

Phones 4 U
"Movie Idents"
50s
24 Oct 2013
The premise of these suitably silly bumpers is that Phones 4 U can offer more - and these absurdly abbreviated movie scenarios are a demonstration of less. Once you get your head around this idea, you can see that they're great fun and you can enjoy the truncated nonsense.

Phones 4 U
"Casino Upgrade"
40s
26 Jul 2013
One of two executions likening the changing of a phone to the break up of a relationship. While clear in its message (always crucial) this doesn't have quite the charm of the other ad, where an endearing young woman is first crushed then consoled by the break-up from and replacement of her boyfriend.

Phones 4 U
"Beach Upgrade"
40s
26 Jul 2013
A lovely, simple concept that likens the upgrading of your phone to the break-up of a relationship. Don't hang on to something just because it's familiar - you could be enjoying something far better if you simply take the plunge. Excellent casting and the inspired addition of a puppy help make this stand out from competitor ads even more.

Phones 4 U
"Brothers"
20s
26 Nov 2012
Another commercial in this excellent series for Phones 4 U has a pair of twins who are uncertain what to buy one another. The solution as usual is to purchase a new handset from the advertised retailer and they both react favourably to this prospect. Simple, fun and, we suspect, effective.

Phones 4 U
"Lingerie"
20s
22 Nov 2012
A man stood in a lingerie shop is puzzled by the options available to him so he's delighted to learn that he can buy a gift from Phones 4 U instead. And as with the underwear he's holding in his hands, he'll have a choice between pink and white when it comes to mobile phone handsets as well. Winning stuff.

Phones 4 U
"Christmas Gifts For Everyone"
40s
4 Nov 2012
Another deliciously over-the-top series of vignettes for the mobile phone retailer who promise they have a phone for everyone. This is an advertiser who have bravely sought a distinctive voice for several years... this campaign provides it in spades and we suspect it provides them with a lot of custom in a tough market.

Phones 4 U
"White"
20s
17 Oct 2012
The hysterical style of the previous commercials is used to good effect once again in this ad which has a man decked entirely in white asking if the advertised retailer has a phone that suit his needs... the overblown voiceover artist anticipates his enquiry and lets him know about the all-white Samsung Galaxy.

Phones 4 U
"Commitment Issues"
20s
7 Aug 2012
A woman asks if the special offers apply to her even though she has commitment issues and she's thrilled to learn that they do. Not only that but the advertised retailer has a special service which caters to people who like to have the latest model of phone the whole time. Thanks to those clever bastards in marketing, it's called 'jump' rather than 'needy pillock' as it should be.

Phones 4 U
"Films On Four Sponsorship"
80s
18 Jul 2012
Complementing the current television commercials, this series of bumpers advertising the sponsorship of Films On 4 by Phones 4 U has a number of people stepping out of character to ask whether they are eligible for the current discounts available from the mobile phone retailer.

Phones 4 U
"Everyone"
40s
24 Jul 2012
Another collection of mavericks are brashly told by an impatient voiceover artist that they too can take advantage of Phones 4 U's special offers. This is just as good as the first in this series and it generates good humour as it conveys its message about the all-inclusive nature of the advertised company's services.

Phones 4 U
"Dyes His Hair"
20s
13 Jul 2012
Further evidence that the advertised retailer's special offers are available to everyone is provided by a slightly sad figure who asks whether he is eligible given that he dyes his hair. He's reassured by the ebullient voice-over that this revelation is no obstacle to his eligibility.

Phones 4 U
"Upgrades"
40s
22 Jun 2012
This charming ad for the mobile phone retailer has a succession of people addressing the voiceover artist as he reveals that they can upgrade their phone. Although it's ostensibly funny, it manages to sneak a lot of information under the radar and that's pretty darned clever.

Phones 4 U
"Spooky Woods"
30s
8 Oct 2011
Another in this amusing series sending up horror movies. This time a man is seeking a hiding place in the woods as he's chased by a sinister adversary. Once the spooky character catches up with him , he only wants to impart product information.

Phones 4 U
"Harry Hill's TV Burp Sponsorship"
42s
8 Oct 2011
In this series of bumpers advertising the sponsorship of Harry Hill's TV Burp by Phones 4 U, a man dressed as a zombie tries to persuade his girlfriend to come into the house and watch television with him before she misses all the bits that are making him laugh.

Phones 4 U
"Little Girl"
30s
2 Oct 2011
This is one of those ads where you're left wondering how they got away with it while being really glad that they did. A woman is on the receiving end of a haunting message but it might not be quite as sinister as it initially appears.

Phones 4 U
"Harry Hill's TV Burp Sponsorship"
45s
5 Feb 2011
A series of suitable irreverent bumpers advertising the mobile phone retailer's sponsorship of Harry Hill's TV Burp. Some kind of prosthetic enhancement appears to have been used to create strange looking grotesques who are having disagreements on the telephone. It's a good fit for the strangely popular comedian's Saturday night show.

Phones 4 U
"Dancer"
20s
11 Oct 2010
Another strange postscript in the ongoing series of ads for the mobile phone retailer set in unusual locations. Here, a man dances to express his appreciation of the special Pay As You Go deals offered by Phones 4 U. Attention grabbing but skirting on the edge of a weirdness that can be off-putting.

Phones 4 U
"Prison Riot"
30s
4 Oct 2010
Back in the Far East prison, the guard talks enthusiastically about the new Blackberry and explains that he likes to use it when things are quiet. Unbeknownst to him, the prisoners in his charge are taking advantage of the distraction it provides to start a riot and initiate an escape.

Phones 4 U
"Hollyoaks Sponsorship"
40s
1 Oct 2010
An amusing series of bumpers advertising Phones 4 U's sponsorship of Hollyoaks. There appears to be a determination here to demonstrate that the advertised phone retailer can provide a handset to everyone and anyone regardless of their circumstances and needs.

Phones 4 U
"Guard's Girlfriend"
30s
26 Jul 2010
This version of an earlier ad introduces us to the girlfriend of one of the prison guards in the Far East. She decides to confirm a rather strange stereotype by trying to steal his phone from them because it is white. What happened to: 'if she goes black, she'll never go back'?
