Land Rover
"Night Sounds"

UK Cars

The creatures of the night come out to play in this sensory treat for Land Rover. Beautifully shot by Gorgeous’s Chris Palmer and DP Barry Ackroyd, even nature can’t resist a gander at the new Range Rover Velar.

It’s a disorientating start: the viewer’s eyes frantically adjust to the pitch blackness, ears transported to a forest with equal intensity. Predators lurk in the shadows, but even they know they’re outmuscled by the four-wheeled visitor. Try telling that porcupine to shift, though.

Some may think they’ve stumbled on an episode of Planet Earth by mistake. After the CGI animal ark we saw last Christmas, these seem to the real deal. Minimalist lighting ensures each subtle twitch and glint in the eye is a nocturnal luxury.

Meanwhile, James Saunders’s sound design ensures complete immersion. From a deer’s tentative steps on the forest floor to bats squeaking like a hanging choir, each noise is skilfully pitched. The porcupine’s final indignant reaction is a lovely beat.

We’ve seen the brand flirt with the wild side many times before, but this is a far more refined and intoxicating execution. The Velar’s sleek design speaks for itself before a final explosion of sound. Man-made, yet elevated by nature.

"Dust Storm"

12 Feb 2017
This epic ad sees Sir Ben Ainslie manoeuvring the new Land Rover Discovery through a swirling sandstorm. The Olympic hero fights his way through the vast clouds of dust to grab his sailing team mates and get them to the water on time. The music (Strauss's Blue Danube waltz) brings a nice touch of levity to the film, as does the sight of one chap determined not to lose his hat. Priorities, lads.

"Winter is Served"

Michelin star chef Simon Rogan embraces Land Rover’s ‘Hibernot’ spirit in this ad. On the menu today is Herdwick hogget lamb smoked over juniper branches (very locally sourced). Without the hustle and bustle of the city, all we can hear are flames crackling and gently sizzling meat juices. A relaxing tribute to eating al fresco.

"Sat Nav"

Ever fancied being a voiceover artist? Land Rover just may change your mind. This chap’s tasked with reciting every conceivable sat nav direction for the new DIscovery Sport. That’s a pretty chunky script, but the seasoned pro and his sound engineer both seem keen. Well, we hope they don’t have dinner plans...

"Hibernot 2016"
60s
18 Jan 2016
Another helping of the Hibernot campaign which reminds us that while the rest of us cower in front of radiators during the winter months, the hardy owners of the advertised vehicles are out enjoying everything the winter has to throw at them. As is often the way in this sector, this ad aims to say more about the car's potential owners than the car itself.

"Range Rover Evoque Convertible"

Land Rover enliven the night thanks to some nifty wire work in aid of the Range Rover Evoque Convertible. Wire models based on the vehicle's design light up various locations around London before the new roadster makes its appearance. We're so used to car ads making bland use of urban landscapes, it's refreshing to see a more colourful and eye-catching treatment.

"Bond Car Chase"
30s
18 Oct 2015
Jaguar Land Rover show what their cars can do in no uncertain terms in this thrill-ride of an ad promoting the new Bond movie 'Spectre'. Souped-up models outwit planes and go off-road up mountainsides to the iconic Bond soundtrack punctuated by explosions and revving engines. Love 007 films or not, you have to admit this spot looks cool.

"Rugby World Cup Sponsorship"

21 Aug 2015
The rugby world cup is almost upon us and this earnest celebration of the sport and Land Rover's support of it hits all the right notes. The car manufacturer wants us to know that it loves this sport at every level from grass-roots to the international teams who will slug it out in the coming months for the right to be crowned world champions.

Land Rover
"Huskies"
30s
4 Aug 2015
On a casual drive across the frozen plains, the man behind the wheel of a Land Rover Discovery happens upon a musher and her stranded huskies. While supers inform us to check the depth before attempting any watery traversal, this lightweight ad skips that inconvenience in favour of a dreary ferry trip. Nothing here threatening to melt the ice cap.

A trio of amusing South African ads for Land Rover advise customers that to ensure they get the most out of their powerful vehicles they'd better use genuine parts. To do this, they have a play around with the vocals of fearsome animals. In this execution, a lion has its imposing roar replaced by the sound of a rooster at dawn. Drolly daft.

A trio of amusing South African ads for Land Rover advises customers that to ensure they get the most out of their powerful vehicles they'd better use genuine parts. "Into the World"
80s
22 Oct 2014
This thoughtfully-crafted piece for Land Rover is narrated by a VO who talks about the car as if it were a newborn; a fresh-faced innocent set forth in the world to be forged and honed into a shape all its own. We like the camerawork - clues about the identity of this being are given via reflections and POV angles at headlight height among other things... subtle.

"Go To Space"

8 Sep 2014
This could probably do with being thirty seconds shorter but you can hardly blame those concerned for getting a bit excited about it: it's not every day you get the chance to go into space. Adventure may well be calling but the explanation here is a bit wordy and clichéd, so it would have benefited from having the visual imagery do more of the talking.

Land Rover
"Richard E Grant"
40s
19 Jul 2014
"You're too weird-looking; your face is too long," Richard E Grant was told when he said he wanted to be an actor. But, like all the people in this Land Rover campaign, he wouldn't take no for an answer and went on to be one of the world's finest screen drunks. He may never have bettered that role, but his unpushy demeanor and quiet, nice-guy persona makes him a great choice for this.

4 Jul 2014
Another strand of Land Rover's 'Can And Will' campaign featuring Olympic swimmer Ellie Simmons. The inspirational athlete is seen here in a teaser designed to draw people's attention to the longer online work. She strikes a defiant note as she reveals that no-one should tell her that she can't do something as it only makes her more determined to do it... the willful so-and-so.

We hit the 30" edit of the new Land Rover commercial pretty hard as it felt cold and exploitative even as it clearly aimed to be anything but. The extent to which it suits the broader canvas provided by sixty seconds is almost unbelievable. The additional vignettes provide warmth and colour and the rock climbing sequence bprovide a good deal more humanity when you see the failed attempts.

Eep. When did displays of positivity among the disabled become a band-wagon? We're not sure about the answer to this question but this ad for Land Rover sure as hell sounds as though it's jumped aboard. Of course it's inspiring when people are astonishingly undaunted by the loss of a limb but should that ever be equated with a vehicle's 'bravery' in negotiating a muddy track?

Land Rover
"Hibernot"

Advertising quite frequently references our unreliable weather but we can't remember seeing anything quite like Land Rover's brilliant new commercial. The car itself barely gets a look in as we're led instead through a celebration of this 'grey and pleasant land' in a succession of vignettes depicting the foolhardy bravado our temperate climate appears to provoke.

BT Sport is up and running and its coverage of rugby is sponsored by Land Rover. To illustrate this news, one of the aforementioned vehicles arrives on a cold morning to bring succour to players getting ready to start their training. At least, we assume that's why they're all gathered together in a remote field.

"A Rough Tumble"
60s
22 Apr 2013
To the strains of gentle classical music, a group of young men careen and somersault through land off the beaten track. There are four of them - each representing a wheel, perhaps, on the Land Rover which they're standing in for; and the slow motion beauty of their movement is a paean to the grace with which the aforementioned vehicle handles itself.

Land Rover
"Mud"

The proud owner of a new white Land Rover lovingly jet-cleans his vehicle, displacing all the accumulated mud onto the (also white) surrounding surfaces in the process. Standing back to survey his work, his laydee emerges from the house to peck him on the cheek before driving away in the car; inadvertently transferring a smidgen of mud from his cheek to hers.

"Heritage"

Interesting choice of voiceover on this ad emphasising the heritage of the advertised vehicle. We're not sure who it is but his old-fashioned diction gives this an air of authority and makes this film look like one of those shorts that used to run before the main feature at the cinema in days gone by.

Land Rover
"Dry Cleaners"
30s
15 Apr 2012
This ad manages to suggest that the advertised car is used for all kinds of exotic adventures without going to the trouble or the expense of filming them. Instead we can join the dots by witnessing the state of the clothes brought to a dry cleaners. Of course, in reality, we all know that the likeliest clothes delivered by an urbanite using one of these vehicles are school uniforms.

Land Rover
"Shifting Scenes"
30s
10 Feb 2010
The background and the terrain provided for the advertised car keeps being manipulated by a finger which appears on screen to demonstrate the versatility of the vehicle. This feels like a watered-down version of something which was originally a bit more ambitious.
