UK Butters & Spreads

Rutger Hauer's gravelly tones are replaced by a driving rawk soundtrack in this latest Lurpak ad. The Easter break offers budding chefs the chance to let loose in the kitchen. Even if this lacks some of the visual pyrotechnics seen in the brand's previous executions, it still conveys their belief that good butter (and a little elbow grease) elevates any dish.

Has cooking become too much of a spectator sport? Lurpak thinks so, and the brand makes a bold move by telling viewers to switch their attention from telly to belly. Lurpak being Lurpak, they've done a first-rate job. Somesuch's Daniel Wolfe meets this campaign's exacting standards head on with a brilliant execution. Once the game begins, it's something to behold.

It's little wonder that advertisers have taken to asking agencies if they could make something that looks a little 'Lurpak-y'. This is simply superb. Each director who's had a crack at making one of these has brought something pretty special to the table, and each in turn seems to be the apotheosis... until the next one comes along.

How good is Dougal Wilson? It isn't really a fair question, is it? It should be noted that every single execution in this campaign for Lurpak has been superb and everyone at W+K responsible for creating these commercials is operating at the summit of their powers. But this ad is a bit special and it's hard to avoid the conclusion that this is down to Wilson's phenomenal skill.

Rutger Hauer's gravelly tones welcome a delicious-looking bread and butter pudding in this Lurpak ad with a twist. Due to being shown during a break on the much-hyped French drama The Returned, the ad comes complete with French subtitles. In fact, C4 made sure all the ads in the first break had subtitles - stylish marketing indeed.

Lurpak's advertising just gets better and better; each individual ad now seeming like a miniature work of art. This 60-second beauty directed by Scott Lyon is about an unassuming alchemist - the unshowy cook with "slightly blunt knives" - turning prosaic ingredients into glorious feasts.

This ad is indisputable proof that Lurpak are on top of their game at the moment. With its cinematic opening and gravelly VO from Rutger Hauer, it delivers the message that if humankind can survive an ice age it can survive the next week... as long we have the hefty sustenance provided by the advertised butter. Epic stuff, truly.

Like the other ads in this series, this is a fantastic look at what happens in the kitchen. Much of it is delivered from the point of view of the food and there are some marvellous shots. It's quite brave in its own way as it strays from the colours and hues normally used to advertise butters and spreads and there are moments when the food doesn't look that appetising. Nonetheless, the overall effect is mesmeric and it's a big thumbs-up from us.

The ante has been well and truly upped in the latest addition to this sparkling campaign. Rutger Hauer provides a testosterone laden voice-over as the protagonist makes cooking an omelette looks like one of the twelve labours of Hercules.

There's a lot of craft in these bumpers advertising Lurpak's sponsorship of Jamie Oliver's latest cookery programme in Channel 4. Each of the three shorts that make up this compilation has been beautifully filmed and it's pretty amazing that they don't feel more rushed given the space they fit into.

Another in this excellent series encouraging people to get down and dirty in the kitchen. This cake, like the pie in the previous ad, is not aesthetically perfect but that's not important... it will taste magnificent and give its maker an enormous sense of satisfaction.

"Puffed Up Pie"

Another charming commercial in this excellent campaign shows a man making a pie. He may lack finesse but that doesn't matter... he knows how he likes his pie and he's having a lot of fun making it... and there's no doubt that he'll love eating it too.

"Breakfast"

This ad divides its attention between a couple sleeping in on a Saturday and the possibilities of the breakfast they will enjoy when they finally rise from their slumber. Like the previous ads in this campaign, there is great emphasis on making the food look sexy.

Another beautifully executed ad for Lurpak which uses fast-moving close-ups which seem to celebrate the food on show. It's a little undone by the words provided for the voiceover which labour the point but you cannot argue with the terrific visuals.

A series of sponsorship bumpers for programming on UKTV Food which is sponsored by Lurpak. In keeping with their excellent TV commercials, these put the food to the fore and place the product at the heart of natural ingedients

Praise is heaped here on the brave food warrior who first discovered that mushrooms are edible. Which is true enough really as anyone who has ever tried to persuade a young child to eat one will know. Once again terrific photography well used makes for a very effective ad.

"Bread"

There's much to admire in the simplicity of this campaign for Lurpak. This one is eulogy to bread which, according to the ad, in the hands of an expert baker tastes like life itself (which makes you wish they'd wash their hands more often, but never mind). Beautifully filmed and a good fit for the product.

"The Potato"

A stylishly made tribute to the potato which urges us to show it some respect by cooking it in the oven instead of bunging it in the microwave. Now, we feel sure there was a tremendous fuss last year when new rules forbade ads from showing butter melting on a baked potato... huh?

Lurpak are giving away holidays in Europe where you can enjoy a luxurious breakfast in bed as evidenced by the waiter bringing said meal to a lucky winner. But, presumably, he/she and his/her beloved are shagging too much to pay attention to his knocks on the door. Perhaps they will only need the Lurpak if they fancy a last tango in Paris.
