UK Power Utility Companies

Director Brad Lubin packs a punch with these brief idents for E.on's Sky Cinema sponsorship. Styled as mini movie tributes, the amusing films riff on sci-fi classics including The Matrix, Frankenstein, and RoboCop. Considering the energy provider are about to hike their prices, they may be relying pretty hard on the goodwill these playful spots create.

Ahh... the cupboard under the stairs - convenient dumping ground for everything from gym equipment to Harry Potter. This fun E.on commercial depicts what happens when we let said cupboard get the upper hand, and this chap is forced to navigate all sorts in search of the electricity meter. Good thing E.on have some smart solutions up their sleeve.

This visually stunning ad for E.on shows that nice old couples can still get funky with their Christmas lights. With a light and laser display set to Avicii's 'I Called Your Name', the energy company inform us that with them we can use a solar battery to store energy all year round so a colourful Christmas blowout doesn't put a strain on the bills or the environment.

Given the limited resources available to director Brad Lubin, you have to hand it to him for this depiction of the aftermath of a dystopian birthday party. We only see two children but it looks as though the room has been visited by a zombie horde of the little blighters as the camera sweeps across it and reveals the source of the banging noise.

This fun spot from E.on loudly and clearly gets across the message that it allows you to control your energy supply wherever you are, and pay for it as you go. A chap on a horse is reassured by an E.on spokesperson - facing him on the same horse - that this is the case, and this spokesperson pops up in increasingly bizarre situations to continue to reply in the affirmative to his customer's incredulous queries. Lovely.

Since the 2009 legislation requiring a starring role for Olivia Colman in every British television production, it's amazing that she still has time for advertising voiceovers - but it's her distinctive timbre that can be heard telling the tale of Paul who suffers from that classic male condition, TV envy.

"Sarah"

If you're like Sarah, you compare your friends and family to your white goods. That's slightly disturbing, we concede, but there are worse things people do, like marrying the Eiffel Tower. Still, thank goodness for E.on, which lets her compare her home's energy usage with that of other homes and this provides an alternative outlet for her need to decide who most resembles the fridge.

This attractively-filmed commercial for the power utility company may look an awful lot like an ad for a kettle but it still manages to communicate its message extremely well: the need for electricity is a part of our lives whether we like it or not and we might as well make sure we get the best deal we can.

In this series of animated bumpers a little girl terrifies her little brother with fantastical ideas about the modern gadgets available to customers of the advertised energy company. It proves quite a neat way of drawing attention to the various innovations.

"Energy Fit - Man"

Another of the simple animated ads drawing attention to e.on's new initiatives designed to persuade us that we should choose them as an energy supplier because they can help us save money. In this execution they tell us about a device that monitors our energy use.

This simple animated commercial reveals that the advertised utility company will give us a free month a year if we use them as our supplier. Is there anyone out there who doesn't realise this deal is only possible thanks to blatant profiteering the rest of the year?

"See The Energy"

An attractively photographed commercial for the energy supplier tells us that by allowing us to see the energy we use, they can help us to save money. The visual metaphor is impressive but doesn't give us any clue how their proposition is achieved.

"More Animals"

Another take on e.on's green energy proposition with a mixture of animals from the first ad and a new set of beasts. This campaign must have the most varied collection of wild animals ever seen in a single commercial... eclipsing the Sure ad from two years ago which depicted football fans as animals.

An exotic menagerie is employed in this ad to illustrate the greenness of e.on's offering. This may break the world record for the greatest variety of fauna in a single commercial. As ever, the greenest claims are made by the least green companies.

Follow up to ad that broke at the weekend is another celebration of wind - this time in the form of a bunch of people watching falling helicopter seeds. They are delighted, possibly because they believe that if they plant them, they will be able to grow helicopters.

The blessed Bill Nighy voices an ad which is a celebration of wind to mark E.ON's proud boast that they are building a huge new off-shore wind farm somewhere near this island. People at the seaside appear to enjoy the increasingly exaggerated effects of the wind to underline the benefit of wind.
