LG's Super Bowl commercial is very much a family affair both on-screen and behind the scenes. For once, Liam Neeson leaves the action heroism to someone else as his mysterious stranger entrusts a man (played by his real-life son, Michael) with LG's 4K technology. Directed by Jake Scott, the ad conveys how the brand is raising the stakes in the high definition realm.

Should have ended with a match cut from the leaping dog to that guy feeding a real hotdog into his mouth..

Is it really necessary to cite three examples where black is a useful background colour before drawing our attention to its use in LG's televisions? We are actually quite accustomed to the use of black in this context and it would really be strange if any other claim was made... perhaps the 'our black is blacker than everyone else's black' is the new black.

LG presents a welcome twist on the advertising staples of flashy visuals, pseudo-tech speak, and overblown VO with a series of humorous ads. Once the VO finishes waxing lyrical about the technological advances of their new range of Smart TVs, he's left more than a little bemused by their eventual uses. In this case, urbane types using it as a flatscreen aquarium during a party.

A bit of pseudo-sciencey stuff, a portentous voiceover - these alone should make for an ad that has you switching off in seconds. But somehow you find yourself wondering, despite its unengaging style, whether this is the TV you really should be getting. We can imagine men casually observing to their mates: "Oh, you still got a flat screen, then?"

"You want... you point... you get..." The VO reminds DAVID of a US comedy sketch where it's explained that all Denny's Diner menus are in pictures because you don't go there unless alcohol has rendered you incapable of speech and reason. This in a similar fashion suggests that LG is the Farley's Rusk of TVs.

Comedian Tim Key presents an examination of 3D in this fun commercial for LG's latest generation of televisions. The main sequence appears to be a single continuous shot which is deadly clever even if 99.8% of the audience won't notice.

According to this ad, watching 3D programming on the advertised television is like being there. Hence, a family watching a jungle-based entertainment feel as though they are really in the jungle. It's an exaggeration, of course, but it's the obvious exaggeration.

It's a little hard to fathom the proposition here. LG is trying to sell us high-definition television so quite why they feel the need to suggest that strange gadgets will put on a 3D light display while you are absent from your house, we're not quite sure. But there it is... advertising, eh?

In the style of a movie trailer, we are told of Scarlet but 'she' is not the female protagonist of an action thriller... 'she' is a new series of televisions from LG. There was, perhaps, a more obvious movie reference to be made here but if you cannot work out what it is then, quite frankly, we don't give a damn.

LG's television has a built in facility for pausing and rewinding live TV. And this golf enthusiast takes advantage of it when he looks away from the coverage at what he thinks is a near-miss. In fact the ball drops in and he is able to watch it doing so by rewinding the programme.
