This understated Audi commercial pays tribute to the car maker's heritage at racing mecca Le Mans. Various models are roused from their slumber to undertake a very special road trip. Director C D Morrish and DP Ryan Carmody craft an atmospheric homecoming as these cars drive through the gloom, while the brand reminds us of its glories on the town's revered circuit.

I don't ever recall disliking an ad so quickly. Shot 2 did it for me.

Directing team Shynola crafts this sensory piece of work for Audi and culture hub Nowness. Mark Pritchard's collaboration with Thom Yorke provides the sonic glue as two dancers express themselves in vastly different locations. Nimble editing brings the split-screen pair to within touching distance of one another. We recommend wearing headphones to appreciate the film's musical flow.

This is by no means the first time we've seen action played in reverse in a TV commercial... but it may well be the best. This has popped up on social media ahead of tomorrow night's Presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Director Ringan Ledwidge ought to be mighty pleased with the outcome and the VFX work is none too shabby either.

Nothing is completely indispensable or irreplaceable, it would seem in this Spanish ad for Audi. You may have a favourite city, but there's always going to be a handful of others with an equal, if different, allure. Likewise restaurants and - for the hip and happening - stylists. But surely there's nothing that could make you trade your best friend? Ah... about that...

Bayern Munich manager Carlo Ancelotti must take a relaxed stance on team preparation if he's willing to let his star players cruise the streets of New York City. Still, it's Audi's gain as this Manhattan-set caper sees Jérôme Boateng, Thiago, Franck Ribéry, and Arturo Vidal compete to unearth the city's hidden talent. An unorthodox scouting technique, perhaps, but a speedy one at that.

You can trust Rogue's Mark Jenkinson to elicit drama out of dashboard instruments, and Audi's faith in the director is rewarded with this neat piece of storytelling. It appears the car maker is rather proud of its digital interface, one which displays everything a road user requires along with some nifty extras. Outside the comfort of the cab, however, all is not well.

Anyone who's ever been labelled 'the brains of the operation' can afford a quiet fist pump while watching this energetic Audi commercial. To the urgent strains of Iggy and the Stooges's 'Search and Destroy', a montage of technical wizardry, creativity, and engineering feats unfolds in a stylish display of brains over brawn.

Most of this feels suspiciously like mere padding as the message is repeated over and over how we've tried to control the weather over the centuries... wanting more rain, less rain, more sun, less sun, and so forth. But why, asks the VO, when an Audi is suitable for any weather? Um, because comfortable driving isn't the only reason for needing certain conditions? And more essentially, because cars have only been around less than 150 years?

This fast and furious ad from directing duo D.A.R.Y.L. picks up from the Audi RS3 Sportback breaking free of its shackles. Taking advantage of its freedom, the car finds itself up against an old classic... one ready to give the young pretender a run for its money. Pitting the contemporary model against a 1983 Audi Sport Quattro, a gripping race between the two quickly ensues.

This 2014 ad for Audi earned itself a bronze lion at Cannes this year and agency Venables Bell & Partners should feel pretty chuffed with their award-winning effort. For office drone Carl, every day feels rather...scripted. That's because he and everyone around him follows their chunky screenplays to the letter.

A restless young Audi RS3 Sportback struggles to liberate itself from the ties that bind, while echoey strains of 'Please Release Me' fill the underground bunker where the car is held captive. Flashes of glorious freedom pass by until our Audi, pushed to the limit, breaks free and heads off into the world where the open roads of the traditional car commercial surely await it.
NB. Updated to the 40" director's cut on 30-Jun-2015.

An idea which - in other hands - may have turned out to be a bit of a sow's ear is spun into the finest of silk purses. The concept? The moment of this marque's birth. It's all been done in CGI - by The Mill - with an atmospheric soundtrack by String and Tins which brings to life the feeling of the car's push and struggle to emerge.

As Marvel fans will heartily attest, some of the most enjoyable moments in the comic giant's cinematic fare come from spotting legendary creator Stan Lee in his customary cameo appearances. This geektastic ad from Audi has Mr Lee imparting his years of cameo acting wisdom to recognisable faces like Kevin Smith, Tara Reid, and Michael Rooker.

No one does bombastic nonsense quite like The Mob's Paul WS Anderson. In this film - for example - it's pretty obvious that this gang of crooks would be better advised buying the cars they steal as it would certainly be the cheaper option. But that doesn't matter one bit... instead of thinking about that, just concentrate on the glorious spectacle of a well-organised heist.

Another strange tie-in with the new Avengers film that isn't being taken entirely seriously by the advertiser concerned. The first half of the ad is pretty conventional with glimpses of Audis as the film's characters go about their business - but then the supers change tone and we're told to expect a different kind of 'striking' from the car. Yet if that gag was going to work at all, wouldn't it have been better to attach it to the shot of the car being hurled in the first sequence? Just odd.

Audi has crafted a 60" blockbuster. A driver travels through a dust bowl, ignoring the message on his dashboard advising him to get a service. Mechanics left starved of his custom suddenly turn rabid and general pandemonium ensues. The driver's salvation is revealed to be an Audi Service Centre.

This superb spot demonstrates how an ad for a new car doesn't have to be a floridly bombastic bore. Instead of telling us how amazing it is for the usual nebulous reasons, this dispenses with verbal flummery and instead shows us a presumed comet blasting its way across the vast icy wastes of space... which turns out to be the new Audi hurtling towards earth.

A clever little pre-roll spot for the new Audi which uses to its own advantage the fact that people tend to skip online ads as fast as they can. To the sound of an engine at full throttle we see a dashboard with the speedo ratcheting up and a line explaining that the car can reach 100mph before viewers can click away.

This diverting film pays tribute to skateboarding pioneer Jay Adams who sadly died earlier this year. Using a grainy look and unusual sound design, director Marc Schölermann has created an extremely diverting mini-documentary with the advertised car making only the most fleeting appearance. We suspect this was made for tuppence-ha'penny which only adds to its excellence.

This very stylish ad for Audi actually demonstrates what its strapline - "presence redefined" - means, which is a refreshing change from the abundance of advertising that relies on baffling non sequiturs. A gramophone in an austere old warehouse pours forth redundant advice on how to obtain said presence with posture and language... till a sleek new Audi rolls in and nudges the instrument to the floor.

Again, a mystifyingly early ad for a car that doesn't hit the forecourts for a full 12 months. A cute gaggle of robots funkystepping down the roadgrind to a halt - except one, which is powered half by electric and half by petrol so it goes further. That's great, sure; but will we remember that in a year's time?

This is such a good idea that it must have been tempting to exclude the car from it altogether and let the metaphor stand for itself. But maybe that was too brave even for Audi. It's an immensely clever celebration of discreet power. When we picture a boxing match, we see two individuals going at it hammer and tongs. But they're not alone - there's a third person in the ring and he's in charge.

A series of scenarios showing what happens to tyres when they're no longer needed is used to illustrate the idea that not all tyres are lucky enough to be used on an Audi. There's a splendid tale of improvisation behind this excellent commercial... which can be read here.

A smartly dressed woman falls in the night-time street when one of her high heels shatters, and the contents of her bag scatter across the pavement as the heavens open and her skirt splits too. She's not even wearing a coat. An Audi rolls past. No-one helps her. This is because she serves purely to demonstrate a point: unlike her, Audi offers both style and substance.

A very strange hybrid indeed. An old man - looking for all the world like the Scarecrow from The Wizard of Oz - and a young bloke with beetling eyebrows finish a game of telephone chess and agree to meet for lunch and golf. For the uninitiated, these are Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto; the Star Trek Spocks - and Audi has chosen them to help showcase their new car.
