UK Promos

M.I.A. has had some epics promos to accompany her music - one of our all-time faves being 'Bad Girls' by Romain Gavras. Quite a lot to live up to - but this self-directed promo is up there with the best and features some of the most compelling choreography we've seen in a while.

She reveals an eye for stunning compositions and iconic images; alternately cutting between the strangely intimidating Mexican wave-style performers and herself - dressed in billowing orange fabric against a monumental backdrop.

The track too is everything you'd expect from M.I.A. Provocative and challenging, she takes no prisoners as she sets herself apart from other powerhouse female singers: 'I'm not Rihanna / I'm not Madonna... / I've been around in this world causing drama / The real spice girl, hot girl power'.

It's been a while since we heard from her, and this is a massive return to form. Watch and marvel.

How do you follow a hit and a video like Bad Girls? With difficulty. Bring the Noize – only someone as ballsy as M.I.A. could name a single after Public Enemy's iconic agit-rap track and bring the same level of swagger to it – is a harsh, jangling, anarchic thing that seems to have had a difficult birth and come out hissing and spitting.

Psy was this year's internet phenomenon, but Bad Girls is unrivalled as 2012's most outstanding video. It focuses on the Saudi culture of rich young boys dicing with death in the desert but features girls performing some of the stunts instead. Shot in solidarity with the 'women to drive' movement, it's stunning and powerful.
