You’ve got to feel for Sunderland A.F.C. Well, unless you’re a Newcastle or Middlesbrough fan. While the Black Cats currently find themselves languishing at the bottom of the Premier League, this moving ad paints a far rosier picture.

Beginning in 1997 - Sunderland’s final year at Roker Park - the film depicts one family’s bond with the club. The script is laced with shrewd period details: father and son discuss Niall Quinn’s form; friends celebrate as Andy Reid strikes; and the next generation enjoys the Stadium of Light for the first time.

The film’s affectionate tone reminds us of Barclays’s own tribute to footie fans, and Burning Reel’s Kristian Young does a lovely job conveying the club’s family vibe. Still, those who’ve bought a 2017/18 season ticket can expect a nervy run-in.
