UK Tea

Given The Nightly Show’s flatlining ratings, you’d think ITV would’ve given their old mucker Michael Parkinson a ring by now. Not that the chat show legend is short of work - he’s now heading Yorkshire Tea’s hiring committee. “Good lad” Ali Malik joins the illustrious likes of Billy Connolly and Muhammed Ali in being grilled by Parky. Nice ringtone, by the way.

More stellar work from Lucky Generals for Yorkshire Tea, this time featuring the much-loved Brownlee Brothers . No length is too far for the company who pride themselves on doing things 'proper', and the lads swim, cycle and, er, power walk to make sure their urgent tea delivery is made on time.

Yorkshire Tea aren’t fans of ‘on hold’ music. Smooth jazz, panpipes, questionable cover versions… none of which are their, well, cup of tea. So the Harrogate-based company has come up with a better solution: live music from Kaiser Chiefs. When the receptionist puts a caller on hold, we get an amusingly truncated blast of the band’s signature hit, ‘I Predict a Riot’.

Colin - the 'head brewer, perfection pursuer' - is the 'tea-jay' of his office, and he's here to tell us all about it in this cracking ad by Rubber Republic for Yorkshire Tea. With his low-rider trolley and shawl-collared cardi, Colin is a rapper extraordinaire with Northern fire in his belly and a take-no-prisoners attitude.

It's no secret that Britain takes tea rather seriously... so it's no surprise Yorkshire Tea takes it very seriously indeed. In fact, tea is very much at the centre of their universe. Factory worker Brian gets more than he bargained for when his scrunched-up bit of paper fails to find the bin. His mercurial colleague takes the opportunity to fill him in on the brand's devotion to doing things "proper".

Rosemary Shrager and Michael Vaughan are the all-important judges in a competition between two rival cricket clubs in this engaging ad for Yorkshire Tea. The winner will be granted £10,000 for a new clubhouse but the battleground is not the field of play - instead, it's the ad-hoc kitchen where the tea is made for the twenty minute interval. Winning stuff.

Yorkshire Tea has returned home from its gap year in America having apparently learned something about showmanship on its travels. Newly announced as the official supplier of tea to England's cricket team, the beverage celebrates this development with a splendid commercial demonstrating the razzmatazz they can bring to the stately sport.

More of the trip across America designed to help ex-pats get a fix of proper English tea. This looks like a compilation of footage from the previous ads (albeit with some new locations hovering into view) and may be a bid by the client to get one last cup out of the teapot, so's to speak.

Another look at the ongoing mission to bring proper tea to long-suffering ex-pats in the USA. What's clever about this campaign is its sly suggestion that the advertised tea is more representative of a decent cuppa than the alternatives.

Britons in Florida are delighted when 'Little Urn' turns up with buckets of the advertised tea. Their enthusiasm for Yorkshire Tea reminds us how much we can miss a proper cuppa when visiting the US and cleverly uses that prism to highlight the qualities of the advertised product.

This commercial reveals how Yorkshire Tea's special hard water variant was taken to Nevada in the USA to relieve expats gasping for a decent cuppa. The madcap road trip is well documented but the ad is let down by an unconvincing voiceover.

A neat postscript to the earlier commercial shows the builder and his client tensely sitting down for a tea now that the pot has warmed. The genteel offer of milk can't disguise the simmering resentment but, being Yorkshiremen, they have to have a truce for their tea.

"Argument"

A Yorkshireman and his decorator interrupt a fierce argument so they can have a cup of tea but once they've necked their beverage, they resume hostilities. Obviously, we're supposed to understand that everything stops for tea in Yorkshire.

An amorous couple interrupt their kissing to have a cup of tea. The aim is to illustrate the idea that teatime is important in Yorkshire. Indeed it is... however, it is worth noting that teatime in Yorkshire is when you have your evening meal.

Another in the series of ads featuring Graham Fellows as his character John Shuttleworth. This is the best so far... it cleverly subverts the idea of advertising by having Shuttleworth talk about the technique being used before he suffers a Gilliamesque calamity.

John Shuttleworth is the comedy alter ego of performer Graham Fellows (who, as Jilted John, sang Gordon Is A Moron back in 1978.) Like his fellow comedy punk, Johnny Rotten, Fellows is now advertising something you might find on your tea table.

Bill Nighy's voice brings to life an ad that asks rather dismissively what planting trees has to do with tea. Nothing, it turns out (the tea plant is a bush, after all) but thanks to a scheme between Yorkshire Tea and Oxfam buying the product will enable the charity to plant trees.
