NICK BALL IS MR CHRISTMAS

Blink's Nick Ball has spent the last few months in full-on Christmas mode as he was asked to make three seasonal campaigns this year.

They are all stand-out pieces of work and when David Reviews' Jason Stone caught up with him at Blink HQ on the last day of pre-production ahead of yet another shoot, he took the opportunity to ask him how feels about his new role as Mr Christmas.

Despite the toil of back-to-back projects and chronic jet lag, he was in great spirits and talked with ebullience about last-minute adjustments; fulfilling an ambition to direct a piece of musical theatre; and climbing into bed with Cate Blanchett in an interview that you can listen to.


The first of the three pieces of work we discussed is KFC's Christmas campaign. It turns out that the Brexit theme was introduced quite late in the process and Nick Ball had to be pretty agile to accommodate it.

His agility didn't end there though... check out the way the nativity action is all caught in a single shot.


We also talked about his Australian ad for retailer David Jones. Plainly looking to tap into the John Lewis vibe, this impressive film features Cate Blanchett.

As you can see from the photograph above, working with a bona fide superstar has its upside. Working with the fragrant actress appears to have been a dream come true for its director and the two struck quite a rapport.



Nick Ball's work for Aldi Australia also came under the spotlight. He cited this as an excellent example of the work that's possible when you have a client who fully backs both the agency and the director.

As well as the main ad, he takes delight in a series of shorter pieces which echo the barking quality of the conceit.
