DREW LIGHTFOOT IS NOT TO SCALE

Not To Scale have announced the latest addition to their accomplished reel: Canadian director and animator Drew Lightfoot.

Describing himself as 'born in the woods, raised in the cities', Lightfoot has worked in a myriad of mediums with many of the biggest names in animation. Some of his best-known projects (Big Yellow's 'Tide' and Sony Bravia's 'Play-Doh Bunnies', for example) have earned him a slew of awards and industry accolades.

How did he get started? He started early! Lightfoot started an internship at a small animation studio at the tender age of thirteen!

His career in stop motion kicked off when he started working on an animated TV series in New Zealand. At just seventeen - while most of us are busy angsting over exams - Lightfoot's precocious talent enabled him to work on commercials in Australia, Canada, and the US.

Take a look at this impressive stop-motion ad for Royal Mail to get an idea of the kind of talent we're talking about.

Where did he go next? Lightfoot's work grabbed the attention of Tim Burton, and he was made lead animator on 'Corpse Bride'. The movie went on to be nominated for the Best Animated Feature Oscar, and led to Lightfoot serving as animation director for the likes of Dougal Wilson, Frank Budgen and Johnny Green.

Following those high-profile endeavours, Lightfoot began directing himself. He helmed ad campaigns for some of the world's biggest brands, in addition to directing a slew of music promos.

My approach is to never execute the same visual twice.

 ”

This promo for Dragonette's 'Run Run Run' demonstrates how the artistic sensibilities from his animation background translate into live action. The film was shot forwards and played backwards, creating an uncanny visual effect which suits the dreamy qualities of the music.

Is there anything Mr Lightfoot doesn't do? Not really... he also makes documentaries, and even stepped in front of the camera for the first time in 'Spotless'.

The feature-length doc investigates the global marketing systems of the contemporary art world: described by Lightfoot as 'like the stock market, but without any rules'. It's a fascinating watch for anyone who's ever questioned whether a pickled shark or an unmade bed is 'really' art.

Well, that's made my Netflix queue. Not To Scale must be excited to have him on board. Executive Producer Eve Strickman says: "Drew is a great addition to the Not To Scale family, his strong live action work supported by an animation background makes him an amazing asset for any project."

Drew Lightfoot's reel is up on Not To Scale's site now, so you should wander over and take a look. For more information on him or anyone else on the roster, get in touch with Francesca Di Muro at fran@nottoscale.tv or give them a ring at 020 7734 4575.
