MICHAEL LAWRENCE JOINS WANDA LONDON

It’s a pretty picture at Wanda London as they welcome director and photographer Michael Lawrence to their roster.

Lawrence is a well-travelled fellow, always keen to explore new locations and shape his work around what he finds.

His open-minded approach means he’s got plenty of stories to tell around the campfire, as well as producing a varied and eye-catching reel.

Let’s get cracking, then. Give us a taste of Lawrence’s work. How about something upbeat to start with? This Reebok ad claims us humans have an average of 25,915 days to make our mark on the world. Lawrence’s cut is scored by Nina Simone’s ‘Ain’t Go No, I Got Life’, lending a extra skip to the ad’s step.

What a difference a day makes, eh? That should get punters moving. Lawrence knows how to provoke a reaction. He shot this astonishing film for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation from a first-person perspective, charting one woman’s turbulent experience. Stepping into someone else’s shoes has rarely felt so uplifting.

That’s a beaut. Isn’t it just? A first-person perspective can feel gimmicky at times, but Lawrence makes it a vital storytelling device.

Shooting on location just offers so much... if you’re willing to mould the narrative around it.

 ”

Setting is just as crucial to Lawrence. He says: “Shooting on location just offers so much - the design of the piece is already in place for you, if you’re willing to mould the narrative around it.”

Check out his promo for Roy Orbison’s posthumous single, ‘One for the Lonely Ones’, for example. A Las Vegas strip club is the ideal setting for this intimate tale of faded glory.

You can tell Lawrence leaves no stone unturned on-set. Flexibility is important, too. He says: “I’m a firm believer that you have to design your production around the needs of the script.” This considered approach to his craft has inevitably attracted admirers - with Wanda beating everyone to the punch.
