Biting the hand that feeds us since 2002.

NEXUS AND EVAN BOEHM CREATE BUBBLE TROUBLE.

Nexus Studios’s Evan Boehm explores the dark side of fizzy pop in a new interactive tale.

Based on a short story from Jeff Noon’s ‘Pixel Juice’ collection, the narrator (Gethin Anthony) introduces us to a lad addicted to the sugar rush. His libation of choice? Spook.

Available in strawberry, orange, lemon, apple, and elderberry at the twist of a cap, we’re told how this playground treat turned into a lifelong obsession.

The film is best viewed via Chrome, so get your clicking finger ready.

Clicking the screen produces a variety of reactions. Bubbles explode into smaller ones, while new flavour combinations form like alchemy. As the screen fills with chemical blobs, the effects of the protagonist’s Spook-aholism become apparent.

Some of Spook's addictive flavours.

Obesity, unemployment, and a wrecked family life… all for a taste of S.O.L.A.C.E. (that’s every Spook flavour in one bottle). The things we’ll do to satisfy a thirst that can’t be quenched.

Underneath Boehm's pastel-coloured packaging lies a darkly resonant tale about addiction and technological ‘progress’. The story veers into dystopian sci-fi territory with talk of ‘intraverts’ a.k.a. intravenous adverts. Thus, brand loyalty becomes a genetic condition.

When things bubble over.

Boehm wants his film to encourage “debate about the social, cultural, and ethical consequences of future genetic technologies” - starting with a few mouse clicks. It’s an intriguing example of point-and-click storytelling, allowing audiences to put their own mark on the story. Spooks all round at Nexus HQ! Well… maybe not.
