NEXUS BRINGS THE GRUFFALO TO LIFE

Following the success of Nexus's hugely creative 1600 app, which allowed users to scan a dollar bill and take a look at a year in the White House, the studio have returned to augmented reality (AR) to bring beloved children's characters to life.

Magic Light Pictures and Forestry Commission England have commissioned the unique app. It allows families to follow special woodland trails and scan the signs they find, bringing Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler's characters to life. Footprint signposts, specific to each of the characters, trigger short animations visitors can view on their screens and - most importantly - take pictures of their kids with.

It's not as complicated as it sounds... check out the trailer below to see how the tech works.

The app aims to get families outdoors and take forest exploring to new heights. Bridgette Hall, Recreation Manager for Forestry Commission England, commented:

“This is such an exciting development and will deliver a completely different forest experience for our visitors. It’s great we’ve had the opportunity to join the two worlds of technology and nature together in a sensitive way!”

We have included a few clever techniques to integrate the characters into their surroundings, which will hopefully make the experience even more magical for the audience.

 ”

Nexus relished the creative challenge of moving AR from small, controlled environments to a larger setting. Their last effort was confined to a dollar bill, after all, so an entire forest trail was a much bigger ask. Take a look at the 'making of' film to see how those boffins did it.

The Gruffalo Spotters trail and The Gruffalo Spotter app will launch from February 20th and run until the end of September 2017. Best of all: it's free, so everyone can play.
