Emmerdale
"Quiet in the Country"
30s
17 July 2006
UK TV Programmes

Much to the bemusement of the target audience, a painting by Caravaggio is recalled in this striking piece for ITV's early evening soap opera. The residents are caught in a moment that manages to suggest tremendous events in the sleepy village with its unfair share of violent incident.

QUICK SEARCH

On This Day

Guinness
"Alive Inside"
60s
26 Jul 2007
A beautifully rendered depiction of what makes Guinness "alive inside" as we see a series of helmeted men fired at synthesiser drums. It's not an obvious representation of a settling pint but it completely works and with excellent backing from the soundtrack makes for a compelling commercial.

McDonald's
"Three"
30s
26 Jul 2011
McDonald's are on a bit of a roll at the moment and this excellent commercial extends their run of form. Three decorators co-ordinate carefully with one another to illustrate the power of three to draw attention to the trio of ingredients in a special offering.

Carling
"Decorator"
90s
26 Jul 2013
The new series of commercials for Carling made by Creature London has established itself very quickly on the advertising landscape and the latest instalment illustrates a willingness to be playful with the core conceit. A decorator lovingly completes the crib for the latest member of the Royal Family but - as we've come to expect from this campaign - it isn't quite as perfect as he hoped.

Skoda
"More Power"
60s
26 Jul 2013
Visually, this cuts through other car advertising like a hot knife through butter, using souped-up symbols of suburbia to drive home (ahem) the idea that this ride is more powerful than it used to be. The slack-jawed admiration yielded from the people involved aren't necessarily the type you want to impress; and just because they recognise the car is more macho than any of their powerhoses, prams and ice cream vans it's not exactly a siren call to go out and purchase a new Octavia.

Short Films
"Glance"
2 mins 55s
26 Jul 2013
Academy's Conkerco have surpassed themselves with this sublime short film capturing a moment that many will recognise. A man and a woman catch each other's eye as they pass like strangers in the night and momentarily witness the happiness they could enjoy together if only they could connect.

Phones 4 U
"Beach Upgrade"
40s
26 Jul 2013
A lovely, simple concept that likens the upgrading of your phone to the break-up of a relationship. Don't hang on to something just because it's familiar - you could be enjoying something far better if you simply take the plunge. Excellent casting and the inspired addition of a puppy help make this stand out from competitor ads even more.

Samsung
"Jack Tries Rowing"
90s
26 Jul 2016
Jack Whitehall shows he's without a paddle when it comes to rowing... or recognising five-time Olympic medallists. After narrowly negotiating a conversation with Sir Steve Redgrave and fellow Olympic champion Helen Glover, it doesn't take long for Whitehall's stint as coxswain to result in a, erm, career-ending injury. Another amusing execution from the brand, and a neat way of communicating their tech's water-resistant credentials.

McDonald's
"Spacewalk"
60s
26 Jul 2016
An astronaut is flagging outside his spacecraft in the cold wastes of the void. His grasp on the cord connecting him is failing... even the thought of his wife and children can't quite galvanise him to make it back to the safety of the hatch. But his desperate colleague has an idea... and it just might work.

Strava
"Strive"
1 min 40s
26 Jul 2016
This strapping ad for online exercise community Strava tells us that being an athlete isn't about performing in front of packed stadiums, lucrative endorsements, or podium finishes - it's about getting out there and giving your heart rate something to think about. With plenty of visual and audio zeal, the ad depicts cycling, running, swimming, and other physical workouts as athletic feats in their own right.

Coastguard
"Cold Water Kills"
40s
26 Jul 2016
This haunting film by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency reminds us that our perception of the water after a couple of drinks can result in fatal consequences. All is still beneath the surface before a man plunges into the water. As soon as he begins to struggle, the VO's grave exclamations indicate his fate is already sealed. Bubbles cover the screen and frantic movements slow to a grim acceptance as the body has nothing more to give.

Organ Donation
"Rebecca Nix"
60s
26 Jul 2005
The parents of a young girl called Rebecca Nix talk about how when she dies tragically they honoured their daughter's wish to donate her organs and it helped them come to terms with it and find a positive in her demise.

Smirnoff
"Birch Bark"
20s
26 Jul 2006
Which premium vodka, this ad asks us, is filtered through carbon manufactured from birch trees found in the forests of Eastern Europe? This poses one of those questions that sounds like perhaps we ought to care about where the carbon came from when in fact we don't. At all. Not even a little bit.

Sun 5 in 1
"Fantasising Scientist"
30s
26 Jul 2006
Pity the poor boffin this ad who hopes that his contribution to the development of Sun's 5 in 1 dishwasher detergent will have him being lauded by the general public. DAVID wants to know exactly what the other four things this stuff does other than clean dishes in a dishwasher.

Asda
"Greetings"
30s
26 Jul 2007
The second instalment of Liza Tarbuck's stint at Asda has her taking over responsibility for greeting the punters. I'm sure DAVID's not alone in feeling this is the most pointless job in the universe... is there anyone out there who has ever felt more welcome in a shop because someone is stood at the door?

Asda
"Bag Packing"
30s
26 Jul 2007
This Asda campaign is too honest for its own good. Although it proves to be a pleasant showcase for Liza Tarbuck's amiability... the shoppers with whom she engages seem unlikely to make younger, aspirational viewers want to go to the store. And coming over to Asda from Brittany? Pleeeeeease.

Hollyoaks
"New Arrivals"
60s
26 Jul 2010
If only Hollyoaks was as good as its trails. This lengthy piece introduces us to a series of new characters who are being added to the show's cast. As you'd expect from the soap opera aimed at teenagers, they are all uncommonly attractive.

Sure
"Bubble"
30s
26 Jul 2010
If only it was true that people who smell unpleasant because of their sweat were inclined to keep their distance. In fact, according to DAVID's sensitive nostrils, they cannot get close enough and they don't look like the woman in this ad.

Clarks
"Stand Tall"
30s
26 Jul 2010
A neat special effect is used to show children walking tall in their Clarks shoes. This brand has an excellent heritage and it's gratifying to see them living up to it but the musical choice is a little limp compared with what's gone before.

Weetabix
"Marathon"
30s
26 Jul 2010
The elite runners in a marathon are rather surprised when a man in a rabbit costume draws up alongside them. And they're no less surprised when he's joined by two other runners in novelty costumes... what could be the explanation for their extraordinary athleticism?

Phones 4 U
"Guard's Girlfriend"
30s
26 Jul 2010
This version of an earlier ad introduces us to the girlfriend of one of the prison guards in the Far East. She decides to confirm a rather strange stereotype by trying to steal his phone from them because it is white. What happened to: 'if she goes black, she'll never go back'?

Renault Megane
"Menton and Gisburn"
30s
26 Jul 2010
Renault are doing another of their ads which contrast France and England. Only, this time, they are "seeing what happens" when a megane travels from Menton on the Cote d'Azur to Gisburn in Lancashire. We're thinking... rain. What do you reckon?

Orange
"Phone Fund"
30s
26 Jul 2010
Another in this excellent series for Orange which wryly explains the benefits of using the advertised mobile phone network. A woman climbs on to a bus as the sardonic voiceover reveals that she gets money towards a new phone each time she makes a call.

The Sun on Sunday
"Rooney's Overhead Kick"
30s
26 Jul 2011
Richard Swarbrick's fascinating animation technique creates a new way of looking at an immensely special goal scored by Wayne Rooney. As Terry Venables describes it, animated figures reconstruct the goal itself and its majesty is relived.

Illamasqua
"Born Again"
7 mins 10s
26 Jul 2011
This lengthy viral for Illamasqua follows the progress of a woman with a dark secret and a difficult task ahead of her. How ever much a captive audience might admire it, it's not clear that it's got what it takes to captivate the twitchy online hordes.

O2
"Priority Moments"
40s
26 Jul 2011
Sean Bean tells us about Priority Moments from O2 which enables their customers to get their grubby hands on special offers. The means through which this is illustrated has various items being plucked from a mobile phone and certainly commands the attention. Music's a bit naff though.
