UK Mobile Phones

A young man fears the worst when the young woman he fancies drives away without giving him her phone number. Sure, she has his but what are the chances she's going to call?

In a highly relatable sequence, he constantly checks his phone, has his hopes raised when someone else with a similar ringtone receives a call and basically turns into a hopeful nervous wreck.

So what the hell's he supposed to when he finally receives the long-awaited call and - in his haste to take answer it - knocks his phone into a sink full of water? What comes next is one of the most impressive demonstrations of a product attribute we've seen for quite a while... he's able to answer the phone normally as it's apparently untroubled by its journey to the bottom of the washing-up bowl.

According to the super, it can survive immersion in clean water up to a depth of 15m for as long as thirty minutes. A sensational claim given a first rate treatment.

How Do You Solve A Problem Like Maria?
"Marias"
30s
23 Jul 2006
A superb trail recalls one of the most iconic moments in cinema - the opening sequence from The Sound Of Music - and adds one or two extra versions of Julie Andrews as Maria to let us know about a forthcoming programme in which the role will be auditioned.

Virgin Media
"Backlot"
60s
23 Jul 2009
A woman wanders around the backlot of a Hollywood studio and finds herself surrounded by mainstays of popular culture. Her open-eyed innocence is designed to reflect the experience of viewers discovering all the marvellous channels on the advertised service.

Street Summer
"Street"
60s
23 Jul 2011
A return to form for 4Creative in this trail for a series of youth-based summer programmes. Various impressive acts of anti-social behaviour are glamorised in a sequence made to look as though it's a glimpse at a city street on an ordinary day.

Childline
"It Follows Me Around"
5 mins
23 Jul 2012
It's rare for a film as long as this to hold our attention throughout but this is an exceptional piece of work. The protagonist is a teenage boy with a very troubled life driven by a father with a drink problem. This glimpse at the dysfunction provoked by this dynamic is heart-breaking... not least because of this lad's efforts to protect his little sister. First rate.

Audi
"Rally"
90s
23 Jul 2015
This fast and furious ad from directing duo D.A.R.Y.L. picks up from the Audi RS3 Sportback breaking free of its shackles. Taking advantage of its freedom, the car finds itself up against an old classic... one ready to give the young pretender a run for its money. Pitting the contemporary model against a 1983 Audi Sport Quattro, a gripping race between the two quickly ensues.

Crusha
"Cats"
30s
23 Jul 2005
Marvellously mad ad for fruity stuff to ad to milk… animated in a similar style to South Park, a number of cats play musical instruments before appearing to threaten one of their number if we don't buy the stuff.

Renault Clio
"Va Va Voom"
1 min 40s
23 Jul 2006
The French Car with British designers is advertised here with icons from both countries sitting alongside each other in lengthy ad that looks more like one of those films used to introduce a corporate presentation than it does a bona fide TV commercial.

Film 4
"Richard E Grant"
40s
23 Jul 2006
Richard E Grant talks about the impact cinema had on his when he first saw a feature film in Swaziland at the age of four. Because there was no television in the country at the time, cinema became especially important to him.

Vauxhall Astra
"Backdrop"
30s
23 Jul 2007
The impact of an impressive special effect in this ad is diminished by its slightly aimless use. A man climbs out of his Astra and literally pulls the terrain he is heading for and scrunches it up. He then replaces it with a road full of hairpin bends which will allegedly prove to be a more interesting drive.

Morrisons
"Denise van Outen"
60s
23 Jul 2007
The phoney war is over. At long last DLKW has unveiled its proper advertising for Morrisons and actually, it's pretty good. In less adept hands, the image of van Outen pushing a shopping trolley in unlikely locations would have looked ridiculous but here it looks stylish and makes its points well.

NatWest
"Punting"
40s
23 Jul 2007
The trio of regulars appear to be making their way up Gloucester High Street in search of fresh water in this topical TV ad. Only joking, they are, of course, punting on the Cam with the two baddies trying to think up gimmicks to lure students to their bank. But a railcard isn't a gimmick... no siree.

nPower
"Loft Insulation"
30s
23 Jul 2009
An excellent set-piece starring Wallace and Gromit has the pair trying to get their loft insulated. As you'll see, their chosen method doesn't exactly work out for the best... indeed, you could describe their idea as lambentable. Baaa.

Thomson Holidays
"Alice The Chief Steward"
3 mins 20s
23 Jul 2009
This unusual film is being on used on board Thomson Holidays flights in a bid to secure the attention of passengers who normally, and quite sensibly, ignore the information offered by airline staff prior to take off. It's a truly magnificent performance by the young lead.

BBC Proms
"Picture Perfect"
30s
23 Jul 2010
When the BBC isn't trying to steal viewers from ITV by appealing to the lowest common denominator, it does fantastic work. And this charming trail reminds us that their annual coverage of the Proms is one of the reasons we should forgo food to pay the licence fee.

Apple iPhone
"Daughter"
30s
23 Jul 2010
Is the bloke in this ad being held against his will in downtown Baghdad? His wife uses an iPhone to show him his young daughter when she's a baby before we see the same child a few years later... meanwhile, he's wearing the same shirt and sat in the same hotel room.

British Gas
"Call Return"
30s
23 Jul 2010
There's a curious rider in this ad for British Gas which reveals that the company promises to call back if it fails to answer a call within sixty seconds. Apparently, this only applies to 'customer service' calls... it would be interesting to know what calls don't qualify under this umbrella.

T-Mobile
"Tre's Invite"
30s
23 Jul 2010
A man dresses as a mummy in the latest in this engaging series of ads for the mobile phone service provider. That's an Egyptian mummy... not his own mummy. That would be weird. As usual, it's been cleverly doctored to look as though it's homemade.

KFC
"Wedding Food"
30s
23 Jul 2012
Two men at a wedding clowning around miniature burgers they've grabbed from a silver platter are interrupted by a friend who is hiding under a table with a boneless banquet purchased from the advertised fast food joint. This clever piece of advertising positions KFC as the common sense alternative to overly fussy food.

KFC
"Fussy Eaters"
30s
23 Jul 2012
Children demonstrate their propensity for fussiness in a couple of situations but mum knows exactly what to give them to avoid the moaning... a box of boneless chicken coated in salty gunk. KFC continues to successfully position itself as the unfussy alternative chosen by happy families.

Paddy Power
"Escape Call"
20s
23 Jul 2012
A young woman is rescued from a ghastly date by a phone call that lures her back to her house to play bingo on her computer instead. It's an amusing little piece of interplay and is as irreverent as we've come to expect from this advertiser - on the very day that it's announced its sponsorship of a giant egg and spoon race.

Aldi Scotland
"Picnic"
40s
23 Jul 2012
A couple are enjoying a quiet picnic on a hill walk when they're interrupted by an older woman who criticises their food choice. They should, she tells them, have gone to Aldi and she begins to present them with the bargains they could have secured. Amusingly tongue-in-cheek stuff for the supermarket's stuff north of the border.

Direct Line
"Baby Talk"
40s
23 Jul 2012
When the customer with the toy dog from the previous ads keeps becoming distracted by her need to use baby talk on her pet, Chris Addison's character decides that the best way to communicate with her is to follow suit and he adopts a similarly daft way of speaking. An amusing addition to a funny series of ads.

Sainsbury's
"Barbecue"
20s
23 Jul 2012
In this prettily shot piece a man tends a barbecue as his internal monologue mutters manfully about 'cooking meat with fire' as though he's continuing a tradition that began with his cave-dwelling ancestors. The theme from The Monkees plays quietly in the background to tie this to other recent work.

Radio Times
"Swimmer"
10s
23 Jul 2012
A woman in a swim suit settles down on her sofa just as a continuity announcer reveals that it's time for her race. It's an amusing way of letting us know that the Radio Times has detailed schedules of all the upcoming Olympic events and we can avoid missing anything we want to see if we buy it.

Bold 2 In 1
"Young Gymnasts"
30s
23 Jul 2012
A series of young children practice gymnastics while a single child's voice is heard singing the Spandau Ballet song Gold. It must have been tempting to have the child sing 'bold' instead of 'gold' but, it turns out, it was a temptation well worth resisting.
