Heineken
"The Prep Talk"
90s
13 September 2016
UK Lagers

José Mourinho has had better weeks. Defeat in the Manchester derby to Pep Guardiola, questions over his team selection.. you'd think the Special One would fancy laying low for a few days. Instead, he's rallying the troops from the rooftop in this rousing Heineken commercial directed by Guy Ritchie.

If this really is José Mourinho at full volume, then it's a terrific performance from the Portuguese. Storm clouds gather overhead and lightning strikes as he unleashes a team talk felt by all bloke-kind. Business meetings, snowstorms, flirting at the bar... none of it matters because "tonight is match night".

It's not all thunder and bluster, mind. The script sneaks in a moment of levity when the gaffer retires for the evening with his fluffy companion. Nice slippers, by the way.

While Mourinho's managerial credentials have taken a knock in recent times, he remains a top draw in advertising. Thanks to the energetic script and visual scope, his charisma conveys the lager's commitment to unforgettable match nights just in time for the Champions League's return.

This really isn't helped by the fact that they've cleared used a 17 year old to dub a 12 year old.

VW Beetle
"High Five"
45s
25 Sep 2011
This charming ad from America directed by our own Chris Palmer tries to recapture the sense of fun long associated with the original Beetle. It's a largely successful effort and it heavily reinforces the idea that this car is every bit the cult its predecessor was.

Smart Cars
"Tandem"
90s
25 Sep 2012
It says a lot about the perceived appeal of the advertised car that it only appears in the last three seconds of this minute-and-a-half long commercial. Having said that, the preceding 87 seconds are lovely with a great music track accompanying some beautiful footage of a pair of skateboarders doing some tandem stunts.

McDonald's
"NFL Bad Lip Reading"
30s
25 Sep 2013
Advertising's never been shy of seizing the Zeitgeist for inspiration, and McDonald's is no exception. Picking up on the popularity of YouTube's 'Bad Lip reading' channel, the brand - as sponsor of the NFL - turned to its creator to make this very funny spot for its spicy chicken wings.

FoodTube
"Bacon Don't Buffer"
3 mins 25s
25 Sep 2013
Jamie Oliver and Kevin Bacon combine forces in this clever collaboration that advertises EE as well as promoting Oliver's FoodTube channel. Filmed to look like one of the short films posted on Oliver's YouTube channel - albeit with a pretty impressive guest star - you only realise that you're looking at something else altogether when Oliver's side of the screen freezes because of internet issues.

Mercedes-Benz
"Sensations"
90s
25 Sep 2013
Great use of music in this extravagant ad for Mercedes. Aiming at a younger audience to broaden their market share no doubt, this has a monolithic slab inventively smashed and carved into the sleek new model by various means. Brings the brand dramatically into the 21st century.

Johnnie Walker
"From the Future"
60s
25 Sep 2013
Over the hardcore techno track Pursuit, an urgent male VO talks us through someone's present - only to reveal that the someone is yourself, and it's your future self who's doing the talking. Are you destined to be an office drone or will you carpe diem with the help of Johnnie Walker?

Audi
"Duel"
90s
25 Sep 2016
This is by no means the first time we've seen action played in reverse in a TV commercial... but it may well be the best. This has popped up on social media ahead of tomorrow night's Presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Director Ringan Ledwidge ought to be mighty pleased with the outcome and the VFX work is none too shabby either.

Coca Cola
"Wayne Rooney Viral"
50s
25 Sep 2006
Viral ad cleverly purports to show footage of Wayne Rooney mucking about when the camera crew are between takes. It's no wonder he keeps breaking his bleedin' metatarsals if he gives them this kind of punishment when no-one's looking.

McCain Oven Chips
"Sunflowers"
10s
25 Sep 2006
Appropriate post script to the Chips Glorious Chips work has a fellow who looks ready to deliver a rousing number in an MGM Musical holding a dancer aloft as he tells us that the fries (made using sunflower oil) have only 5 per cent fat.

McDonald's
"New York Special"
20s
25 Sep 2007
An amusing ad to tell us about a new variant available at the fast food restaurant. A street vendor and a customer begin a bizarre duet which simultaneously tells us about the product and sends up New York street life (albeit that of the 1980s).

Colman's
"Bish Bash Bosh"
30s
25 Sep 2007
The simplicity of the product is neatly illustrated here by a series of quick cuts (in both senses) which show a woman preparing a casserole. The line 'bish, bash, bosh... real good nosh' harks back to an earlier era of copywriting which brings Dave Trott to mind.

Motorola
"Experience"
60s
25 Sep 2007
Michel Gondry of Partizan directed this highly stylised commercial for Motorola out of the US which uses surreal imagery to illustrate the way the phone becomes a central part of one woman's life. The effect is magical even if we are slightly wary of the way our phones are taking over our lives.

Smirnoff
"Pool Party"
80s
25 Sep 2009
This American film for Smirnoff shows what you can do with a few pick up trucks, some water and a determination to party. Not that we'd recommend any of the depicted activity if it also involved downing any of the advertised alcohol... it has a habit of complicating things.

Audi
"Intelligently Combined"
45s
25 Sep 2009
A giant glass structure made up of small boxes is rotated like an immensely complicated Rubik's Cube to put together the advertised car. A visually impressive ad which cleverly emphasises the engineering beauty of the German cars.

Carphone Warehouse Talk Talk
"X-Factor Sponsorship"
2 mins 10s
25 Sep 2010
This series of bumpers advertising Talk Talk's sponsorship of The X Factor incorporates clips sent in by the public. They aren't any worse than the awful pieces of karaoke that make up the programme they sponsor but the lower production values suggests they're there to be laughed at.

Tesco
"The Big Drop"
40s
25 Sep 2011
After some handy advance publicity, blue supermarket announces its intention to discount everyday items via this commercial featuring Julie Walters's voice and a member of the supermarket's staff. Tesco intend to keep us going during this difficult time... and vice versa, we expect.

Old Spice
"Bed"
30s
25 Sep 2012
Greg Jennings of the Green Bay Packers explains that you should never mix business with pleasure before striding down the field while carrying a double bed on his hips with a beautiful woman at his side. He catches a ball thrown by the quarterback as he goes and demonstrates that it is possible to combine business and pleasure after all.

Nike
"Running Woman"
60s
25 Sep 2013
This longer version of the 'push yourself further' ad expands on the idea that each little improvement in fitness should be an incentive to do more. It's not about setting daunting goals; it's about revelling in each incremental achievement along the way.

McDonald's
"Snack Wraps"
30s
25 Sep 2013
A young chap evidently in the last stages of moving home is carrying a box of bits and bobs from his car. Distracted by a pretty young woman, he doesn't notice a door suddenly open in his face and drops his stuff. A costly error. At least McDonald's provides inexpensive solace.

Goodwill
"Stuff"
60s
25 Sep 2013
The stuff in your house that you don't use has potential work stored away in it for other people. This jaunty animated ad for the Goodwill charity has a light touch and takes a positive, practical approach rather than a guilt-inducing one, which is a sensible move.

Waitrose
"Apples"
40s
25 Sep 2013
Waitrose use the damp British climate to their advantage by revealing how it helps them to champion home-grown produce like apples, which thrive here amidst the endless rain and temperate summers. Alan Titchmarsh pops up again to provide the amiable authority of one who knows about these things.

Bingo Godz
"They're Amongst Us"
30s
25 Sep 2013
Online bingo is - ominously - evolving. This has the Godz arriving on Earth like so many cheap superheroes... and while it may at first glance seem as if the ad is promoting collectable figurines, it's actually about combining the traditional eyes-down element with gaming. Hmm.

Lloyds Bank
"Moving Out"
60s
25 Sep 2013
A photo-montage illustrating the way the male VO felt about still living at home at the age of 31 is both funny and poignant; capturing the unspoken thoughts between the lines. The only jarring note is the fact he refers to his undies as "Y-fronts", which lessens your sympathy to his plight somewhat.

Sony Xperia
"Bests"
60s
25 Sep 2013
Lovely ad for Sony demonstrating how this particular model is ideal for capturing all those moments you want to remember and share. A cover of Movin' on Up sets the tone, and the quality of the photography suggests the phone's camera will not disappoint.

Vodafone
"It's a Boy"
20s
25 Sep 2014
This touching ad for Vodafone features video footage and photos of a young man and his dad, who - after the the birth of his son's baby boy - is now a granddad. The footage starts with a video call informing the dad of his new status, and throughout the spot shows footage of him with his son, themselves as new father and baby, up to present day. Clever and affecting.
